Weight Loss Drugs & Why Mindset Still Matters

Courtney Gray Episode 110

In this episode, I share my honest thoughts on the new landscape of weight-loss drugs and why the deeper mindset work behind weight loss will never become obsolete.

I also introduce the new name of my 3-month program — Modern Change — where I help women lose 10–15 pounds permanently by learning the mindset, emotional intelligence, and habits that create lifelong results.  Enrollment opens Monday 12/22/25 and you can get all the details and enroll here: www.modernbodymodernlife.com

I talk about:

  • Why I'm not here to give medical advice or debate pros/cons of weight-loss drugs
  • Why judgment around these medications — especially among women — is hurting us
  • The importance of supporting women in whatever choices they make for their health
  • What weight-loss drugs don’t do: teach emotional mastery, habit building, self-trust, or long-term skills
  • Why this work still matters deeply, whether or not someone uses medication
  • How I want to think on purpose about other women — with more compassion, less judgment, more love

My stance: You get to choose what’s best for your body, and I’m here to support you either way.
Mindset, emotional regulation, honesty with yourself, planning, and self-trust will always matter.

Bob, welcome to modern body, modern life, the podcast for women who want to feel powerful, healthy, strong and confident, inside and out at every age. On this podcast, we talk about becoming a woman who is fully in control of her eating and movement, so weight loss, strength and energy become permanent. We also talk about something bigger, becoming the woman who takes her deepest desire seriously and goes after more in every area of her life. I'm body and life coach Courtney Gray, and I believe you can get in the best shape of your life at any age, and when you do, it becomes a catalyst for everything else, your relationships, your confidence, your joy, because when you feel like you and your body, all of life gets better. Let's get started. Welcome to the podcast. Episode 110 weight loss, drugs and why mindset still matters. This episode has been a long time coming. I've been literally thinking about what I wanted to say about weight loss, drugs and the new landscape of weight loss for probably at least six months, maybe longer than that. So I'm actually really excited to dive into this podcast. But before I dive in, I have some big news for you, a few things actually, so my three month program where I help women lose between 10 to 15 pounds permanently. I have a new name for it. The new name that I've been mulling over and brainstorming on for a few weeks now is called Modern change. The group used to be called Modern body, modern life, and it just was too confusing with that being the title of this podcast, and that being the title of my website, it just felt like I wanted it to stand out a little more. And of course, I love the name modern because I just it's part of my branding. And I love the word change, because this work is more than just weight loss. You really are in order to lose weight permanently and live differently and feel differently and be in control, it really is about change. So I love my new name for my program. It's now called Modern change. I think that this new modern change name embodies what my program is all about. So yes, you will learn how to lose weight without dieting and so much more. Because true change comes from thinking and feeling and living differently. My next group program officially starts in January, and enrollment officially opens next Monday, December, 22 so you can head to my website to get all of the details and enroll to save your spot, modern body, modern life.com. Is my website. There will be a link in the show notes, of course. And if you head to my website, you'll very clearly see the information to sign up and save your spot in this group. Space will be limited in this group, as I love to keep these groups small, but everyone is welcome. They're for women all over the world. I love this program. It is like my fourth child? No, maybe my fifth child, because I feel like this podcast is my fourth child, my program is my fifth child. So I love this program and what it's all about, and it is for women all over the world who really want to up level and make permanent changes to the way they're living, the way they're feeling their body and their life. So now on to the podcast. What I've decided to do with this podcast is make it more coffee chat style. You might not notice a huge difference, but I spend a lot of time doing research for my podcast and really dialing in what I want to say each week. But for this one, I want it to be like you and I are out for coffee like this has happened so many times before with my girlfriends. And you ask me, What do you think about all this? Like, this weight loss, drugs available? Like, what are your thoughts? And I want to just kind of more off the cuff talk about it. The reason I'm choosing a more casual podcast is because I'm not a doctor, as you know, I have no business googling a bunch of information about the pros and cons of weight loss drugs, and then regurgitating it as an expert. To you, I think that there's already too much of this going on in the world right now where people just decide to do quote, unquote research online, and then they take the position of an expert and give that information out, and especially with something that is changing so much. You know, there's, I feel like there's new weight loss drugs hitting the market all the time, new different styles of taking these weight loss drugs. There's so much information out there, and I am not about to give you the side effects and the pros and cons. It's just not what you're going to get from this podcast. So I'm not going to list all the benefits and help you make a decision, because in six months from now, all of those pros and cons and elements to decision making might change. I don't know all there is to know about these weight loss drugs, except for what you probably have heard, they seem to quiet the food noise. Is and make it easier to not eat the tempting foods that we want to eat. That's kind of the gist. It does something to the brain where it helps you not want it, like quiets the desire for food. And I have had quite a few clients taking one of these drugs, and I'm so proud of them for understanding what I know to be true that learning the mindset that enables them to create healthy habits is essential, understanding and managing their emotions is essential, and learning to trust themselves is essential, especially if they are really focused on their health, not just weight loss, and if they want to eventually titrate off of these weight loss drugs, which I've heard many people tell me that they want to, that is their plan. So here are my casual Coffee Chat thoughts about these weight loss drugs. For some people, they are a lifesaver. For some people, they are a great option for some people, the potential side effects of of using these drugs are better than the side effects of not using these drugs. There is a lot of judgment going around and thoughts going around about who should and who shouldn't use these drugs. There is a lot of speculation about who and who isn't using them, and there is this narrative that people who use them are cheating, almost like their weight loss doesn't count, because they're using something that is making it easier. I just want to offer that maybe it's time for us to elevate ourselves. Maybe it's time for us to just decide that we want to love on all the people. We want to love on ourselves and the decisions we make for our body and our life, and we want to love on all the people and the decisions that they make for their body and their lives. And maybe we're ready to put down the judgment, especially women throughout history. A few months ago, I saw Serena Williams in a commercial for a GLP one, and it definitely made me pause. I was so fascinated. And the reason is, is I remember Serena Williams for a lot of her career has had much negative body attention. People say horrible. I don't know if you follow tennis, but people have said horrible things about how she's an athlete, but she's overweight, and why can't she get her act together, and she should take her weight as seriously she takes her tennis and all that, and now she's getting shame for this, and it just really made me go, wow, women, we can't win. But I also think that a lot of this judgment is coming from us women, us women to other women. And it just really made me go, what? Where? What are we doing here, ladies, what are we doing? I don't know about you, but I'm just saddened and tired of all of it. So here are my thoughts for you and for me, because I'm not perfect. I don't claim to be judgment free. I don't claim to have ever judged anyone. But here's the work I'm deciding to do, and I want to encourage you to do with me. Here's what I've decided to think about the weight loss, drugs and women's bodies, and how women treat their bodies. I'm going to take care of me, and I'm going to let everyone else take care of themselves in whatever way they want to. It's not my business, and this is going to be new for me. So even though I kind of pride myself on on trying to not say rude things, I really want to start even checking myself in my own head, checking my judgment as I as I judge, going, Oh, wow, that judgment. That is not something I want to think because by judging others, we're really just hurting ourselves. Because very rarely, you know, if someone saw Serena Williams on the street, they probably wouldn't go up to her and say, Wow, you're really kind of cheating the system by using a GLP one. People wouldn't say that, but what they do is they say it in their head, and it just it's toxic to your own humanity. It's hurting ourselves. That negative energy is hurting ourselves, because if we're judging her, we're judging ourselves. So again, I'm going to let everyone else take care of themselves in whatever way they want to. It's not my business. What is my business is helping all of women, whatever their decision, to learn the mindset and the emotional intelligence it takes to make permanent changes to become happier and more at peace and more in control. And what I've seen from so many of my clients too, is it they've tried in the past and they have lost weight, but they still have found themselves not feeling into control, not happy. So we know that this is more than just weight loss, so sometimes I think as women, we can be the worst. Offenders of this judgment, and it does not help it does not help the world. It does not help the energy of the world. It does not feel loving. And really, more than anything, it doesn't help ourselves, because the judgment we are giving to other people, we really are also giving it to ourselves. And if we want to love ourselves harder, we need to love all the people harder. So if you see someone you haven't seen in a while, let's say you're sitting at a restaurant with your family, and you see someone you haven't seen in a while, and they look like they've lost weight, whether you feel like they should be losing weight or not is irrelevant. And if your brain goes to Oh, wow, she's definitely taking something, which what that really means is she's cheating. She's doing something she shouldn't be doing. I want you to pause, and I want you to say, oh so interesting how my mind goes to judgment. Don't shame yourself, but say to yourself, What do I want to think on purpose? And maybe you want to think things like, I'm really happy for her. This is clearly something that matters to her. Or, you know what? I bet she's I bet she's up leveling her whole life. I bet she's now feeling more empowered. I bet she is happier. Well done her. Maybe you don't want to do what she's doing. Maybe we don't even know what she's doing. It doesn't matter. Well done her. You get it. You can get it. So what do I want to think on purpose when I saw that commercial with Serena Williams a few months ago, it made me pause for many reasons, because it made me think about how she used to get so much hate, and now she's getting a new flavor of hate. But it also made me pause as an entrepreneur, because I pride myself in being a really smart entrepreneur, and I had this thought, like, is what I'm teaching going to become obsolete. There was a little bit of like, whoa, Courtney, whoa, whoa, whoa, where are we headed? And I really mulled this over for a while. I considered it because, again, I am an entrepreneur. I want to build a business that is thriving, that is going to take me into my own retirement, that I can build and build and build on. But after mulling this over for a few weeks and talking it over with my husband, with the people in my life who helped me make business decisions, I really have come to a very clear stance. Know what I am teaching is never going to be obsolete, because even if women decide to take a weight loss drug, they're still going to want to learn all the skills I teach. This is why women who are using these drugs as part of their health journey are hiring me. They're joining my groups. They're hiring me privately. So let me talk about what the weight loss drugs don't do. Because you have to remember, we are eating because food is delicious. Yes, we have made it a habit. That's why we're eating in a certain way. Yes, but we are also eating for other reasons. These weight loss drugs don't teach you how to fix the source of why you're eating, and that's what we need to fix. Sometimes a cupcake is just a cupcake, but a lot of the times, a cupcake is an escape from frustration or sadness or guilt the weight loss. Drugs Don't teach you how to identify why you're eating and help you to fix that. They don't teach you how to make good choices. They don't teach you how to get more vegetables in. They don't teach you how to get more water and they teach you. They don't teach you how to really create a plan and be radically honest with that plan and really evaluate your behaviors on a day to day basis. The weight loss drugs don't teach you how to make a plan and stick to it. They don't teach you how to become a woman who trusts herself. One of the beautiful things in my program is women learn how to make a plan, like an eating plan and stick to it. They also learn how to make a workout plan and stick to it. They also learn how to make an organizational plan for their life and stick to it. They learn how to be more efficient at work. They learn how to be more loving with their children or their spouse. They learn how to decide who they want to be and be it, but the weight loss drugs don't teach you that the weight loss drugs don't help you become a woman who feels in control of all areas to understand herself at a deeper level and choose what she wants to think on purpose. The one thing I wonder is if you have a habit of turning to food instead of feeling your emotions, and then when the weight loss drugs help you not turn to food, what are you doing with these emotions you're trying to not feel? Are you pushing them down? Are you taking those emotions out on other people? You must learn how to manage your thoughts and emotions, to feel like the master of your body in your life, and they don't help you do that. So in conclusion, I spent a lot of time wondering if even This podcast was going to be relevant in this new modern landscape of people using weight loss medications. But after a lot of reflection. And I'm talking months and months now, I've been thinking about this podcast, and how do I want to speak to this, and should I bring an expert on and should I talk pros and cons? Mean, there's been a lot of how do I want to do this? And a lot, after a lot of reflection, I realized that I'm not going anywhere. What I'm teaching is not going anywhere. The demand for this work that I am giving to the world is not going anywhere. The demand for my January group, where I teach women how to lose 10 to 15 pounds differently than they've ever learned it it's not going anywhere. Women, whether or not they are using a weight loss drug to help in their weight loss, still need what I'm teaching. So I'm still here for all of you. And I'm really excited to put this podcast out there to publicly say because I say it to people that ask me, and I say it to my clients. I've, I've had many clients say, hey, Courtney, you know, I, you know, I don't know what your stance on this is, but I'm currently taking this and it is helping me, you know, it's helping me with this work. So I'm, I'm throwing this out there for the first time, I am here for all of you, whatever it is you are doing to support yourself, there is no judgment. I support you in your journey, with your modern weight loss goals, with whatever way you want to support yourself in becoming your best self. But I know that mindset and emotional intelligence and creating new habits are a huge part of that. So I'm here for all of you, those of you that weight loss Drugs aren't even on your radar, those of you that have considered it, those of you that are currently taking them, it does not matter to me. What I know is this work is so important for everyone, so I want to support you with it. I hope you have a great Tuesday for information on how we can work together. Head to modern body, modern life.com. To schedule a consultation with me. I'm currently coaching women privately, and I offer group coaching programs you.
