Modern Body Modern Life
This podcast is for women who want to lose weight for the very last time.
If you know what you should eat, but you can't get yourself to eat it, this podcast will help. If have dieted, lost weight, only to gain it back, this podcast will help.
This is the podcast for women who want to lose weight permanently by learning the mindset & strategy necessary to eat what they know they should eat, and feel in control around food. What you put in your mouth all starts with your mind, and once you learn how to manage it, living in a body you love the look and feel of is so much easier.
Modern Body Modern Life is about so much more than weight loss. It's about learning to calm the war that goes on in your head when you are constantly thinking about your body and food.
I will be talking about the importance of up leveling your self concept, listening to your body, feeling your emotions instead of turning to food. I will teach you how hunger is not an emergency, and although food is meant to be enjoyed sometimes, it doesn't always have to be a party in your mouth.
Most importantly, the theme of this podcast supports the belief that you can lose weight permanently and be in your best shape at any age.

There’s something about September that feels like a fresh start...
Summer is winding down, routines are returning, and maybe you’re feeling ready to start taking care of yourself at a higher level again.
But I don’t want your September reset to be another attempt at eating perfectly, cutting everything out, or overhauling your entire life.
In this episode, I’m sharing a different way to think about a reset... one that helps you create a new baseline for how you eat, move, think, and take care of yourself.
We’ll talk about weight loss, mindset, emotional eating, healthy habits, self-trust, and the one question that could make September a true turning point:
What could you practice consistently this month that would change you?
Because the best reset isn’t one you finish...
It’s one you can build your life on.

Welcome to Modern Body, Modern Life, the podcast for women who want to feel powerful, healthy, strong, and confident inside and out at every age. On this podcast, we talk about becoming a woman who is fully in control of her eating and movement, so weight loss, strength, and energy become permanent. We also talk about something bigger: becoming the woman who takes her deepest desires seriously and goes after more in every area of her life. I'm body and life coach Courtney Gray, and I believe you can get in the best shape of your life at any age. And when you do, it becomes a catalyst for
everything else:your relationships, your confidence, your joy, because when you feel like you and your body, all of life gets better. Let's get started. Welcome to the podcast, episode 145, the September reset. First of all, it is a lovely Saturday morning. I my husband is out of town for the weekend, and so I am using this Saturday morning to catch up on the podcast, to do some extra work, to kind of have a little staycation with myself. I went for a run this morning. I might take my niece out for an early dinner, and I'm just kind of enjoying thinking about my business and getting some extra work done. And and then I'm gonna probably read a little a little bit of my book by the pool and enjoy my day. I hope you are enjoying your kind of end of summer, isn't it? I don't know. I always feel like as we get closer and closer to the end of August, it feels like summer slowing down, and part of me hates that, but part of me starts to get kind of ready, and that's what I want to talk about here today on the podcast is there's something about like as we creep towards September, summer's winding down, vacations are slowing down for many people. Kids go back to school if you have kids or college kids. Work schedules become more predictable. In fact, for a lot of people, work actually speeds up, but there's a like a more predictability that happens when we kind of start getting into September. For many women, I think they start thinking,"Okay, I'm ready. I had two women over, two of my girlfriends over for dinner a few weeks ago, and the conversation had this vibe where they were like, "Summer's been amazing. In fact, one of them even were like, "This is one of the best summers ever, but I'm kind of ready. In some ways, in some ways, I'm ready for summer to slow down. I'm ready for September. I'm ready to kind of you know get back to myself or get back to more of a schedule, and it's almost like I'm ready to maybe start eating better, to start moving my body more, or like more in a more routine way. I'm ready to start feeling more like myself in my routines. I'm really ready to start taking care of myself at a higher level, and I love this. That's why I kind of love the whole idea of a September reset. I love getting back to feeling like, oh yeah, this is what I want to be doing for myself. I think that September is one of the most natural times of year to reset. I think automatically we think of January as a reset, and January is a reset for sure. But I also think that September is a big reset as well, and this is exactly what we are going to be doing inside the Aligned Life membership this month. For the focus of the month, it's going to be a September reset, and enrollment is officially open today. So the Aligned Life membership is for women who are ready to make real changes to their body, health, and life. Not for women looking for another diet. It really is for women who are ready to understand themselves at a deeper level, learn how their brain works, learn their tendencies, learn why they keep doing things that they don't actually want to be doing, and really become the creator of like what they truly want to be doing for their body and life, and really become the creator of like what happens next in their lives. And so, for this month, I am going to help every woman inside the membership create their own September reset. Enrollment is open right now. You can head to modernbodymodernlife.com/membership. There's also a link in the show notes. It is open now through september 1, and our first coaching call for the month of September will be on september 2. I would love to have you join us. So why September? Let's talk about it, ladies. Why September? I think there's something powerful about the change in the season. First of all, right? We're kind of ending the hot summer vacationy months. There's like a natural change in the seasons. Sometimes we actually have more time because we're not vacationing as much because we're not on the go. I know so many people, especially I remember being in this phase of life when my kids were in high school. There was this like, oh my God, we want to pack so much in because once they go back to school, there's just not as much. Time to to do vacations, so that's why we pack it in during the summer. But still, there's a little bit more like, oh, I'm gonna have more time when I get back to work. I have a lot of clients who are teachers, and they're like, you know, even though part of me doesn't want to go back to work, once I am back at work, it's just there's a little bit of a because there's like I know my routine, so I think oftentimes we actually have more structure, and a structure in your schedule, like a work schedule, can make it easier to create a structure in your own life, in your own mindset, in your own habits. But here's what I don't
want you to do:I don't want you to come out of summer saying,"Okay, that's it. No more sugar, no more alcohol. I'm working out six days a week, and I'm gonna like lock into being perfect. We've done that before, and we know how this story ends. I really want to encourage you to think about a reset for September completely different this time. The definition of a reset is like to to adjust, fix something anew, something again. And my favorite part of the definition, if you Google like what reset means, is is to establish a new baseline. So when I googled like what is the definition of reset, it said to to set, adjust, fix something again, or anew. I love the word a new. It just feels very fancy, but like my favorite part of that definition was to establish a new baseline. That is what I want from you. That is what I want for you, not from you and from you, is to establish a new baseline. I don't want you to do something for 30 days that you're going to be relieved to stop doing on the first of the next month. I want September to leave you with a new baseline, a new way of thinking, a new way of being, a new way of possibly eating, moving, a new way of understanding yourself. Definitely a new level of self trust, but most importantly, I want September to leave you with something you can build on, because the most powerful reset isn't one you finish and then go back to how you used to be. It's one that changes you. What would actually change you? So here's
what I want you to ask yourself:What could I practice consistently this month that would be a game changer for me? Not like 10 different things, one thing that would be a game changer for me. Maybe it's I'm going to give you a bunch of examples of possibilities. Maybe it's creating a food protocol and actually following it. Maybe it's strength training, like three days a week, like really committing to three, four days a week. Maybe it's changing how you drink, like just really being radical about what kind of drinker you want to be in this world. We talked about this on the last coaching call in my membership. Is is I've really helped a lot of women drink better. Some women want to stop drinking, but more often than not, my clients they want to just drink better. So maybe for the for the your September reset, it's changing how you drink. Maybe it's planning your food instead of deciding what you're going to eat in the moment when you're hungry or tired or when you're standing in front of the pantry. Maybe it's finally learning how to experience an emotion without immediately trying to change it, either with food or scrolling or alcohol or many other things. Maybe it's finally creating a morning routine that has you starting your day in a beautiful way instead of like letting your day immediately control you and take over and feeling overwhelmed. Maybe it's putting your phone down at night and actually getting the sleep you know you need. Maybe it's actually having a better relationship with your phone during the day. You've heard me talk a lot about my phone. I have made massive improvements with my phone usage over the last few months. It's been a game changer for my whole life. Maybe it's getting outside and walking every day because you know how much better you feel when you move your body. And September is a great day for most areas of the world in terms of getting outside. It's not too hot. It's not too cold in many areas. Maybe it's finally making time for something you keep saying that matters to you, but somehow it never makes it onto your calendar. For many of my clients, this is their art. This is their writing, which is also, I guess, a form of art. It is their certain friendships that they keep meaning to to dive back into that they haven't. Maybe relationships they want to build upon, maybe meditation or connecting to source, maybe it's cooking and food prep. There's so many different things, but there are things that we keep saying that matters to us, but we're not doing those things in real time. If someone looked at our lives and what we did on a day-to-day basis, they would say. It clearly doesn't matter to us because we're not giving it our attention. Maybe your September reset is setting a boundary you've known you've needed to set for a very long time. Maybe it's a boundary with someone else. Maybe it's a boundary with yourself. Maybe it's keeping one small promise to yourself every single day for an entire month. So, what would move the needle in your life? And then here's some questions to have you go deeper when you're thinking about that. At the end of September, if you did one thing, and it would be a game changer, what would that thing be? At the end of September, who do you want to be? How do you want to feel? What would make you incredibly proud of yourself when you look back at the month? Like, what would make you go, "I'm so glad I did that" What would make you feel like you are so much farther in an area that you keep telling yourself you want to change? Here's some more questions for you. What do you want to understand about yourself that you don't understand today? And that one might be hard to under that one might be hard to understand. That might be hard to answer. But like, there are things, ways you're acting that you might not really fully understand. This was part of me with my phone usage. It was like, why do I constantly check my email, check my social, check my email, check my social, check my, and I'm like this. There's something here, and I have learned so much about myself and about my fears and about my desires and about my habits through really deciding that I'm going to just touch my phone less. What do you want to understand about yourself that you don't understand today? What do you want to be better at? What capacity do you want to have that you don't have right now? And this could be in any area of your life. So when you think of capacity, what you're capable of, what capacity do you want to have that you don't have right now? I'm going to tell you. Just thought of as a story. I went for a run this morning in the park, and I'm not a huge runner. Running isn't like a top priority for me, but I do love it, and it's very meditative. And I do love like that. It's increasing my lung capacity, my like my the health I feel like of my body. I do love that it is just increasing my cardio. It's increasing my ability to be able to go long distances, being out of breath, I love that about running. So I was running this morning on this trail that I run to all the time, and as I was running today, two girls ran past me very quickly, very very fast speed, and they were young girls, and they're probably, if I had to bet money, they're probably on the track team at one of the local high schools, as they ran by me very quickly, all of a sudden the first thought was, "Oh, I could be going a lot faster, and so I just instantly started going faster. Now I'm not going as fast as these girls. These girls are probably 17 years old, and they're like in the in the top shape of their life because they're probably on the track or cross country team. So I'm not trying to compete with them, but I just instantly started running faster. I instantly have this thought: Oh, I'm capable of running faster. Here I am, like almost to mile three, and I'm going, and I'm proud of myself. And I've been running enough lately that I'm really proud that I could go five miles, and I'm running pretty consistently, so much better than I used to be, but it was this immediate. They showed me another level of myself was possible, so I instantly started running faster. And then my brain, my primitive brain, started going, Courtney, like you're gonna hurt yourself if you run this fast. Courtney, like why are you even doing this? You don't want to run a marathon, you know why are you comparing yourself to a 17-year-old? And I was in that moment just like interested in all of it, and I was just letting it come. My brain was offering me all these thoughts, and I was just as I was running faster, I was like, "Oh, isn't this interesting? I started running faster, and my brain was trying to stop me, so it wasn't even my my primitive brain. A lot of times, our primitive brain tries to stop us from doing something new, but here I was already doing something new. They blew past me. I had the thought, "Oh my God, I could be running faster. I have a new potential speed available to me. I instantly started doing it. It felt great, and then my brain started telling me this is a bad idea. It was very, very interesting, and so this was very interesting. And I was sitting there thinking, "Oh, okay. As I'm running faster, let's decide if this is what I want to do. I mean, my first instinct is it was my instinct to just go, "I should run faster, and so that feels beautiful. I'm listening to my instinct, but now as I'm going faster, let me just slow this down and think: Do I want to be doing this? Why would I want to be doing this? And my first thought was, well, first of all, I'm capable of it, so why not? I'm probably not going to hurt myself. I mean, I could hurt myself going a little bit slower or a little faster. So an increased speed is, and I wasn't even. That much faster. I just literally picked up my pace, so I thought this really. I'm in no danger here, and then I thought, what's another reason I might want to do this? And I thought about one of my boys who is my wrestler, who is just in very good shape. And I thought, you know what? If I think of what I truly want for my life, I would love to think about me on vacation with my family, and me looking at him and saying, "Hey, do you want to go for a run? And him saying yes. Now he would say yes to me because he loves me, but I want him to say yes to me from a place of my mom can keep up with me. I might have to go a little slower because she's older and you know, and I'm in better shape than her. But like, I know that it's going to be a good workout with my mom because I know that she is at an athletic baseline that that is going to be good for me, and that was my favorite reason of all. I thought, yeah, this is who I want to be. I know I've been talking a lot about becoming her, becoming the woman you want to be, and so as I was running, I came up with that, and I go, "Yeah, this is the main reason I want to run faster, because at the slower pace, my heart was still getting a workout, I was still running the same distance, I was still proud of myself, I was still enjoying outside and listening to the birds, and sometimes listening to my music, all the things, but all of a sudden, that increase, those girls inspiring me and and giving me that thought, you could go faster. All of a sudden, made me think this is going to get me closer to being at a competitive edge with my son, and that sounds fun. So back to the question. I think, the question was, what capacity do you want to have that you don't have right now? I would love to go on a run with my son and have my son look at me and go, "Wow, mom, good job. That fires me up. It fires me up that my kids are impressed with me in any way because I'm so impressed with them. That's what makes a reset transformative. If you ask yourself those questions and you know who you want to be, how you want to feel, you know, what do you want to be better at? What do you want to have at the end of 30 days? How do you want to increase your capacity? That's how a reset becomes transformative, and this is where coaching matters. This is exactly why I'm so excited about what we're doing inside the membership for this month. Is because deciding what you're going to do is actually the easy part, right? You've probably done that 1000 times. Like the the interesting part starts really three days later when you don't feel like doing it, when you're tired, when your primitive brain is telling you, like, what does it even matter? You know, when your you know partner orders the pizza, or tells you that they're going out for nachos, when someone frustrates you, when you have a stressful day at work, or you have some heartache in your life, or if your brain's like mine, when your brain says this isn't that big a deal, you can just start again tomorrow. You know what? We here's one of the things I know it's going to happen for a lot of people is, and I'm going to even tell this to the women in my membership. Their brain is going to say, you know what? We should wait till after Labor Day. So this is going to happen for a lot of people. Like we go on an annual camping trip over Labor Day every every year, and so I know a lot of people. They're going to be like, yeah, end of summer, but then they're going to be like, you know what? Let's just wait till after Labor Day. That's your primitive brain. So that's the work. The work is can you commit to being a woman that does a reset even when your brain steps in, and when you're trying to change your own behavior and really create new lasting habits. It can be incredibly difficult to see the thoughts, patterns, excuses, and beliefs that are driving you in that moment. This is why coaching is so powerful. So inside the membership, I'm going to help you look at the days when you're following through, and even more importantly, the days when you're not-not with judgment, not with shame, but from like beautiful curiosity, like what happened, what were your thinking, what were you believing? Your primitive brain got in the way. What was it saying? What were you believing? And what can we learn from this? And what can you do differently next time? That's how you stop repeating the same patterns over and over again. That's how you stop giving up on things that you truly do want for yourself. And that's why I don't want you to just do a cleanse or a diet or just a reset this September. I want your reset to teach you something about you. So if you're listening and you're thinking this might be exactly what I need, enrollment for the Align Life membership is open right now. Come do your September reset with us. I will help you create your plan and then I'll coach you while you're actually in your reset. So let me say something really important right now. You're. Reset should create some resistance. What do I mean about this? Well, first let me say, a reset does not have to be painful or miserable or frustrating in order for it to be powerful. It doesn't need to feel like punishment for having fun all summer. It doesn't need to be a shame on me. I've let myself go and now I need to mentally whip myself back into shape. It doesn't need to be extreme, and it certainly should not involve any kind of perfectionistic thinking. However, I do think it should create a little resistance. If your reset requires absolutely nothing new from you, if it doesn't bring up a little from you, it's probably not going to create anything new for you. So I want yes, I want you to choose something that feels doable, but I also want it to be something that makes you think, oh, can I really follow through with that for the month? That's what I thought. I've already decided what my reset is going to be for the month of September, and when all of a sudden I came up with it, I thought, "Oh God, am I really doing this? And that's when I thought, "Ooh, now I'm onto something. Now I'm onto something because it's going to hit all those markers. When I asked you to ask yourself all those questions, this is going to build my capacity. This is going to change me. This is going to get me to a place that I am now at a new baseline, and it will be truly a reset to like launch myself. That's where we grow. We're going to stay away from all or none thinking. We're going to stay away from perfection. We're going to stay away from any diet mentality that says you have to overhaul your entire life when september 1 comes around. Instead, we're going to practice doing something powerful enough to change you and doable enough that you can actually keep going with what you've learned, new habits, new increased capacity, the new you. So here is the question I really want you to leave this episode thinking about. If I do this reset, what will be different about me at the end of the month? Not just how many pounds will I lose, but like what will you have learned? What will you understand about yourself? What will you be better at? Here's a great one: What habit will feel more natural? Where will I trust myself more, and how will I have increased my capacity in some way? Because so much is possible in one month. You can absolutely lose weight. You can absolutely fit better in your clothes. You can feel stronger. You can have a better relationship with alcohol, a better relationship with the people in your life. Set better boundaries. You can have more energy. But I want even more for you than that. I want you to get to October and realize, I know how to live better now. That's what I want for you-that's a reset you can build a life on. So I want to invite you to come do it with us in the Aligned Life membership. If you've been feeling that September energy I'm talking about on this podcast, if you're thinking like I'm ready, I'm really ready to start taking care of myself. I'm ready to stop like just talking about the changes I want to make to myself and actually start practicing them. I'm ready to understand myself better. Do all this. Come join us. So, enrollment for the Align Life membership is officially open right now. It ends on the first of September. That's when enrollment doors will close, so we can do this work together as a community. We'll start with the changes you want to make in your life and identify the one thing that you want to reset on that would have the biggest impact. We'll make it realistic enough that you can follow through, but powerful enough that you're a little nervous about it, just like me. And then we're going to spend September practicing, evaluating, and learning, and getting coached, and really creating a new baseline that you can build on long after September is over. Doors close on september 1 at 8p.m. and head to Modern Body Modern Life forward slash membership, or there is a link in the show notes, of course, to get all the information and details and join us. Have a lovely Tuesday! For information on how we can work together? Head to modernbodymodernlife.com to schedule a consultation with me.
