Why Your Symptoms Keep Coming Back (It’s Not What You Think)
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Why do symptoms keep coming back, even when you’re doing everything right?
In this episode, we explore the real reason recurring symptoms like headaches, migraines, autoimmune flare-ups, and chronic health issues don’t fully resolve.
This isn’t about willpower, discipline, or doing more.
It’s about understanding how the nervous system and unconscious mind create patterns that repeat over time.
You’ll discover:
- Why your body uses symptoms as a learned response
- How past experiences shape your current health patterns
- The connection between emotional needs and physical symptoms
- Why traditional approaches don’t always lead to resolution
- How NLP and hypnosis help shift patterns at the root level
If you’re tired of temporary fixes and want to understand the deeper cause of your symptoms, this episode will give you a new perspective.

Why Your Symptoms Keep Coming Back (It’s Not What You Think)
I heard a really interesting story the other day that had me reflecting on my own journey.
It was from a fellow practitioner who was sharing about a client she had worked with. This client had been dealing with recurring headaches and migraines. The kind that keep coming back and disrupt everything.
And here’s the interesting part.
After doing some deeper inner work, the kind of work I do with clients as well, they uncovered something that went all the way back to childhood.
This woman remembered a time when she felt like her mom favored her sister over her.
And as a child, we don’t process things logically. We respond.
So there was a moment when she had a headache, and because of that, her mom let her stay home from school and stayed home with her.
And in that moment, something clicked at a nervous system level.
A need that wasn’t being met, maybe attention, maybe love, suddenly was.
And her system learned something very quickly.
“Ah… this works.”
Not consciously. But unconsciously.
And that’s the part most people don’t realize.
Your body and your unconscious mind are always looking for ways to meet your needs and keep you safe.
So if something worked once, even if it created a symptom, your system may hold onto it as a strategy.
Fast forward into adulthood…
And now, when that same need isn’t being met in other ways, the system goes:
“I know how to handle this. Headaches worked before.”
And suddenly… the headaches show up again.
Not because your body is broken.
But because it’s trying to solve a problem the only way it knows how.
And this is a conversation I have with clients all the time.
Your body is not working against you.
It’s trying to protect you.
Now, sometimes the way it does that doesn’t feel helpful. But the intention underneath it is always protection.
I was talking with a friend recently who’s been in therapy for years.
And she said something I hear all the time.
“It helps. I feel better after I talk about it. But nothing actually goes away.”
And that’s an important distinction.
Because talking about something can create awareness.
But awareness alone doesn’t always create resolution.
That’s where approaches like NLP and hypnosis come in.
The goal isn’t just to understand the pattern.
It’s to actually change it at the level it was created.
So instead of managing symptoms…
You’re resolving what’s driving them.
And this story really landed for me because I’ve seen this in my own life too.
In my book, Standing Somewhere New, I talk about a memory from when I was about four years old.
I walked into my parents’ bedroom and saw my dad packing a suitcase.
He had just gotten home from a business trip, so I was confused.
And when I asked what was going on, he said, “I’m leaving for a while.”
And I remember feeling sad.
What I didn’t realize at the time was that my four-year-old mind made a decision in that moment.
A belief.
That I needed to put my needs aside and take care of others in order to feel safe.
And that belief shaped a lot of what came after.
Because later in life, something interesting started to happen.
When I got sick, my family came together.
I had asthma as a kid, and I was in the hospital a lot.
And every time I was sick, my dad would come back. My family would be together.
So again, at an unconscious level, my system learned:
“This works.”
“This brings connection. This brings support.”
And as I got older, the asthma went away…
But other things showed up.
In 2005, I was diagnosed with MS.
And what I didn’t realize at the time was that when something felt like it was missing… support, attention, connection…
Symptoms would show up again.
Not consciously.
But as a pattern.
And once I started to see that, everything began to shift.
Because I realized I didn’t want to rely on symptoms to get my needs met.
I wanted to find other ways.
Healthier ways.
And that’s what this work allows you to do.
When we can go back and identify where a pattern started…
And release the emotional charge connected to it…
The system no longer needs to run that strategy.
And that’s exactly what happened with the woman in the story.
Once she uncovered that original moment from childhood…
Once that emotional connection was resolved…
The headaches weren’t needed anymore.
And they started to go away.
That’s the power of working at the root.
Not just trying to manage what’s showing up…
But actually understanding why it’s there.
So if you’re listening to this and thinking…
“This sounds familiar…”
“This feels like me…”
Then this is the kind of work I do with clients.
And it’s not complicated.
There are really three core things we focus on.
The first is focus.
What you focus on shapes what you see.
And most people are unintentionally focused on everything they don’t want.
In NLP, we talk about how you can only consciously focus on about 7 plus or minus 2 pieces of information at a time.
But there are billions of bits of information available.
So your mind filters based on what’s familiar.
If you keep focusing on the same problems, you’ll keep seeing more of them.
But when you shift your focus…
You start to see new possibilities.
The second piece is action.
How do you align your actions with where you actually want to go?
Not from force or pressure…
But from alignment.
And the third piece is releasing what’s in the way.
The emotional charge.
The limiting beliefs.
The past experiences that are still influencing how you show up today.
Because until those are addressed…
They will continue to shape your results.
And I’ve seen this across so many different areas.
Health.
Confidence.
Public speaking.
Relationships.
Career.
At the core, these patterns are all connected to the unconscious mind.
So if this resonated with you…
If something clicked…
I’ll drop a link in the show notes where you can learn more and book a Private Breakthrough Screening.
We can look at what’s been driving your patterns and what needs to shift.
Because you don’t have to stay stuck.
You don’t have to keep repeating the same cycles.
Sometimes it just takes seeing things from a different perspective…
And changing what’s happening underneath.
Thanks for listening.
And I’ll see you in the next episode.
