Ven. Master Chin Kung: Doubt is truly the biggest obstacle in learning
If one's faith is not firm one may believe first and then doubt,
leading to regret.
Who has never experienced regret in their lifetime?
Those who have no regrets know their limits, standards,
wisdom and ability to abandon evil and cultivate goodness,
and they attain true happiness.
As an example of doubt: Among animals,
the fox is known for its doubtful but clever nature.
Doubt harms good roots, like a poisonous sting;
suspicion and doubt cuts off good roots.
Especially in Buddhism,
after learning for a while if there doesn't seem to be
any remarkable effect or good karma,
one becomes suspicious and stops studying,
turning to other paths such as Taoism or studying magic.
After doubting the teachings of scriptures,
they go on to learn secret mantras and recite them.
Doubt is truly the biggest obstacle in learning.
Many beings have been suffering in hell for countless kalpas,
unable to escape.
They think of their family and relatives every day,
hoping that someone can help them attain salvation.
How many friends and relatives are willing to help them?
This era is almost collapsing,
and how many people believe in the Buddha?
How many people believe in karma and its consequences?
Therefore, in Buddhist scriptures,
doubt is likened to a poisonous sting,
and one’s belief should be firmly rooted to uproot the sting of doubt.
