Episode 7: The Vagus Nerve + Stress
Ohhhhh the Vagus Nerve.
A very important part of managing and reducing stress in the body.
Put simply, the Vagus Nerve is the communicator between the brain and the body that signals the Sympathetic or Parasympathetic Nervous System to kick in during a stress response.
The Vagus Nerve is not fully developed at childhood, thus experiences that we had between age 0 - 7 can greatly impact our perspective with fear and the strength of our communication signal between the brain and the body to communicate safety + relaxation or threat and protection.
There are many exercises that can help us strengthen the signal between our brain and body via the Vagus Nerve so we more easily self-regulate in everyday life AND most especially during times of stress / discomfort.
Happy Listening!
Disclaimer: I am NOT a doctor. This is my perspective on the topic, anchored in the work of various thought leaders + physicians (like Andrew Huberman, Irene Lyons, Peter Levine, Joe Dispenza + Dr. Gabor Mate to name a few) paired with my own life experiences and healing journey from burnout, grief, severe injury and other events.
