Marketing Root Work Podcast -
Angela Ellison & Mako

TRANSCRIPT

Judy Murdoch

Hello and welcome to the Marketing Root Work podcast. I'm your host, Judy Murdoch, and today we're going to do something a little different and fun.

We're talking about marketing based on the wisdom of our cats. I'm here with Angela Ellison. Angela and I have both been devoted cat moms for many years. As someone in marketing, I've always noticed that cats absolutely rule the internet.

Without any effort, we do it for them. I actually did some research and learned that 15% of internet traffic is cat-centric. While not surprising, those are still crazy numbers.

Angela Ellison

Yeah.

Judy Murdoch

I think it's obvious why: people really enjoy watching cats do "cat stuff."

Someone once commented that cats represent our very best selves, yet they're always a heartbeat away from doing something totally silly. Angela and I brainstormed eight lessons we can learn from them. Since cats are so good at marketing, we should ask them for guidance on making our human marketing more effective.

Today, Angela's cat, Mako, is going to teach us a lesson. Angela, please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about how awesome Mako is.

Angela Ellison

All right, well, thank you Judy.

I'm an intuitive animal communicator. I help people build stronger partnerships and relationships with their animals by bridging understanding through intuitive communication.

It's also supportive for pet parents who have lost their pets, as I can connect with animals both living and in spirit. I love talking with animals and supporting the people who love them so much. My companion, Mako, is a very handsome tuxedo boy.

Usually he's right here next to me, but today he is sunning himself in another room. I'll have to show him to you later.

Judy Murdoch

He is a smart kitty cat.

Angela Ellison

He is! He knows exactly where to find the sun.

Judy Murdoch

Exactly.

Angela Ellison

He's such a fun boy and an amazing teacher. Mako is also quite handsome.

Tuxedo cats are beautiful; they are always dressed for success.

Judy Murdoch

He's got little white paws, right?

Angela Ellison

Yes! He has a white chin, chest, and paws. He looks dapper every day.

Judy Murdoch

Yeah.

Angela Ellison

Mako really appreciates the simple things in life.

For example, he gets very excited when he uses the litter box. When a friend connected with him to find out why, she gathered that he just loves to celebrate the basics of life.

He enjoys the little things. However, he can also be anxious at times—as can I. We've been helping each other work on that. I've learned how to help him feel more grounded and safe, and in doing so, I've helped myself as well.

When I help his nervous system calm down, it really helps mine too.

Judy Murdoch

It's interesting how domestic cats are both amazing predators—apex predators, really—and yet, because of their size, they can also be prey.

Angela Ellison

Mm-hmm.

Judy Murdoch

Like apex predators. Um, they are very, very good at that.

Angela Ellison

Yeah.

Judy Murdoch

And at the same time, because of their size, they themselves can also be the subject of a predator.

Angela Ellison

Yeah.

Judy Murdoch

Here in Denver, cats can be at risk from coyotes. It's a sobering reality.

Angela Ellison

We have coyotes in our neighborhood, especially in late summer.

That's actually how we lost our first cat. It's humbling to realize that while these beautiful creatures are in our homes, they are also part of a wider ecosystem. They face real risks to survive.

And, you know, what they have to do to survive, and also, the risks that they have, if they're outside too. Yeah.

Judy Murdoch

That's why they are so sensitive. As solitary predators, they are like little radar systems—their ears are always twitching and they are constantly smelling and watching.

They have incredible eyesight and motion detection. Those traits help them hunt, but they also help them stay protective of themselves.

Angela Ellison

 Yeah, exactly.

Exactly. They are incredibly adaptable, which is a trait I really admire.

Judy Murdoch

Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, it, I, I think I, I have a lot of respect and admiration for my cats. Mm-hmm. So, Angela, what lesson does Mako want to teach us about marketing?

Angela Ellison

Yeah.

Judy Murdoch

You'll have to share with us.

Angela Ellison

Mako has many lessons, but if he were to give marketing advice, he would say: "Don't worry about things so much."

I struggle with perfectionism, wanting every message to resonate perfectly. But sometimes it takes multiple exposures for people to feel connected to what you're saying.

Right.

Angela Ellison

Mako reminds me that it's okay to share what you have today and let that be enough. You can always try again tomorrow.

Just do it, and then celebrate the fact that you did it at all.

Judy Murdoch

I love that. It's a great reminder not to fret over whether something is exactly as you envisioned it. It also makes me think about what amazing communicators cats are. They don't speak English, but they are very good at letting us know what they want.

Angela Ellison

Yeah.

Judy Murdoch

The other thing that came up too, as you were sharing was what amazing communicators, cats are. Oh my gosh. I mean, they do not speak English, you know. Um, but man, my cats are very, very good. Mm-hmm. At letting me know what they want.

Angela Ellison

They speak so much through their presence and body language.

Judy Murdoch

Yeah, they do. And also just, um, the body language.

Angela Ellison

When they sit and look at you or do a certain action, you usually know what they need.

Judy Murdoch

I'm not always sure, but my cat Joey is a very chatty dude.

He doesn't meow much; he just makes these little "mm" sounds. Sometimes he's pointing out his empty food bowl, but other times I think he's just telling me to get out of my head.

Mm-hmm. He wants his, you know, he, he's like, there's no food in my bowl. Mm-hmm. But, um, I think other times he's just like. You know, like, get out of your head

Angela Ellison

Yes.

Judy Murdoch

He wants me to just hang out with him for a bit.

Angela Ellison

Oh, yes.

Judy Murdoch

It's like he's saying, "Human, you are way too in your head, and it's not good for you."

Angela Ellison

Right? Yeah.

That's what I love about pets. They take us out of ourselves and help us take better care of ourselves, which in turn helps us care for them.

Judy Murdoch

They remind us of what is actually important.

Which is them.

Angela Ellison

Yes, absolutely.

Judy Murdoch

I always wonder who is actually in charge. We like to think we are, but honestly, I think the cats rule.

Angela Ellison

Yeah.

Judy Murdoch

They certainly know how to get me to do what they want!

Angela Ellison

Oh, I know. They're very creative.

Judy Murdoch

So, Angela, any other like tidbits of wisdom that you think Mako would like to share with us?

Angela Ellison

Mako would also remind people to have fun. He has a great imagination and plays by himself with his toys or runs through the house.

He also teaches the importance of letting your voice be heard. He finds so much joy in simple creativity.

Uh, um, but Minko, I'll play with him some, but for the most part, he likes to play on his own with his toys and in his box. And, yeah, it's just fun because it's like, he just reminds me of the joy of being creative, having fun. Who knows what he's thinking about when he's doing that. Um, yeah. Yeah, there's uh, a lot of joy.

He gives me a lot of joy.

Judy Murdoch

Joy. Joy's important.

Angela Ellison

Mm-hmm.

Judy Murdoch

Thanks, Angela. And thank you so much for sharing Makos wisdom with us today.

Angela Ellison

It's such a delight to talk about our kitties and what they add to our lives. I'm sure many other pet guardians can relate.

Judy Murdoch

I have a feeling people who are dog owners.

Angela Ellison

Mm-hmm.

Judy Murdoch

I bet dogs have some great things to share about marketing and business too.

Angela Ellison

I'd love to hear what others think their animals would say about entrepreneurship.

Judy Murdoch

Yeah.

Angela Ellison

Uh, the wisdom the animals have for us throughout our lives, you know.

Judy Murdoch

For those listening, please leave a comment. Tell us what wisdom your pets are sharing with you. It might just make us better business people!

Angela Ellison

Absolutely. Being a business owner is hard, and our animals see us through all of it.

Judy Murdoch

It's really hard.

Angela Ellison

Yeah. Yes. It can be very hard and our animals see us through all of it.

Judy Murdoch

My cats are definitely my board of advisors.

Angela Ellison

Yes, absolutely. Yes. So was Mako.

Judy Murdoch

Thank you so much, Angela. This was so much fun.

We'll do this again.
