Have you ever felt like everything was on track until life slammed the brakes, an injury, an illness, diagnosis, burnout, a season that knocked you flat? Suddenly the progress that you work so hard for feels out of reach and motivation is replaced by frustration.

Kimberly/terry (00:18)
Yeah, but here's the truth. You don't have to come back the same. You can always come back stronger. And in this episode, we're diving into what it really takes to bounce back, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally too, because a comeback isn't about perfection. It's about resilience and resilience is a muscle you can build.

Kimberly/terry (01:11)
Hey there, welcome to Group X Appeal. Terry Shorter here with.

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (01:15)
Kimberly Spreen Glick.

Kimberly/terry (01:17)
So Kimberly Spreen Glick as you noticed today on set at the Group X Appeal set. She's got a stunt double notorious B.O.B. He's here. No, not anything near your beauty at all, but he insisted on sitting in your chair today, Kimberly. Absolutely. So he stepped in today and it actually worked out just fine because today's episode is all about.

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (01:26)
Looks just like you, though.

I appreciate that Bob.

Kimberly/terry (01:46)
going from setbacks to comebacks, overcoming injury, illness, and just life's hurdles in general. And so Kimberly is at home because...

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (01:56)
Kimberly is fighting an illness.

Kimberly/terry (01:59)
But you know what? She is such a warrior, a fierce warrior. She did not want to miss this episode, even though Bob insisted on wanting to participate and sit in her chair. He's been wanting to sit in her chair now, by the way, for 32 episodes. Kimberly, I'll have you know.

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (02:16)
And Bob do not get comfortable is all I'm saying

Kimberly/terry (02:19)
I told him the same thing. not nearly, not nearly the, the view that I enjoy watching, but, but we get to see you here online. thanks for logging in on, on, the episode from home today. That's so awesome of you. So, so we really wanted to provide and it's so fitting today. Kimberly's got some great information, especially, you know, dealing with what she's dealing with today. We've got five helpful, but.

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (02:35)
My pleasure.

Kimberly/terry (02:49)
easy to implement strategies to help you bounce back stronger. Literally, she told me yesterday that she was just starting to get sick and she's already starting to feel like she's, you know, over the kind of kind of making her way over the hump. Is that right?

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (03:03)
I'm getting there. Yes. Because of some of the things we're going to talk about today, actually. Yeah.

Kimberly/terry (03:09)
Yeah, yeah.

So let's break these strategies down. I'll kind of kick these off if you don't mind so you can continue sucking on that. What do you have in your mouth right now? Tea? And what is that? Tea or juice? Okay, green juice. So we'll have to find out more about that in a minute. What kind of green juice that is specifically. But the first strategy or tip we wanted to share with you and hopefully will help you is

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (03:23)
I've got green juice.

Kimberly/terry (03:37)
to redefine success in this particular season that you're in. So for example, you know, just know that setbacks, they just simply change your timeline and not your worth. So instead of chasing your old pace, perhaps maybe just ask, what does winning look like for me right now? Maybe perhaps it's just simply walking without pain at all. Maybe it's showing up with joy and maybe you just honor that.

you know, from a personal standpoint in college, when I was a, I was a division one athlete, a soccer player, we ran six miles a day before we went to class, before school even started as a team. And then we'd go to school, then we'd have practice, we'd do, you know, weight conditioning after that. Definitely worked in that season of my life, that old pace that I was at, but I can tell you,

that I would not be able to keep that pace up today in this season of my life. I am winning in different areas. Like for example, I've taken on things like yoga, kind of fills that gap where I feel accomplished. like I've got a victory under my belt when the class is done. And so that for me now in this season,

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (04:40)
you

Kimberly/terry (05:01)
I'm able to enjoy and redefine success now as a 52 year old for you, Kimberly, how have you redefined success, you know, for, for yourself so far.

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (05:13)
I have redefined it in the way that I kind of just honor the evolution. I honor the wisdom and the strengths I've gained along the way because I think about the fact that I used to teach 15 to 20 classes a week and the vast majority of them were high impact. And I just redefine. I also, like you, got into yoga. so for me,

Kimberly/terry (05:17)
Sure.

Mm-hmm.

Wow, yeah.

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (05:40)
getting in and feeling still the ability to move my body, but in a way that doesn't have such a great cost. That's kind of the thing. Like there are a lot of things that we could still do, but we have to start asking at what cost. So you redefine, know, cause success is being able to do what you want to do without having to pay a major price for it, right? So that's been it for me. It's just kind of honoring and embracing the evolution of me, my body.

Kimberly/terry (05:51)
at what cost.

Right. Right.

Good. Yay. Love it. Love it. Love it. So tip number two or strategy number two, you want to go ahead and share that.

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (06:09)
and

Now.

Yeah, so the second

tip is kind of related to what we just talked about because so often when we have a season where we've been knocked down, whether it's an injury or illness or something, we immediately focus on what we've lost. We immediately focus on what we can't currently do, what we can't currently focus on. But the tip is focus on what you can do. Focus on what you still can do. So for example,

Kimberly/terry (06:21)
Mm-hmm.

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (06:43)
If you have an upper body injury, maybe you can still work out legs. You can still, you know, you can still move your body, just maybe avoid the shoulder if it's hurting or something like that. The focus on, you know, if you're dealing with an illness like right now, I'm focused on hydration and good vitamins and, you know, all the fun things and, know, vitamin C and zinc, you know, I'm focusing on getting the rest I know I need.

Kimberly/terry (06:46)
Yeah.

Good for you.

Mm-hmm.

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (07:11)
to

be able to feel better as quickly as possible because so often we get frustrated and we push ourselves because of that frustration and we end up being down longer than we need to be. So I used to live like that where I just, you got to push through, right? And now I kind of pull back. I was really proud of myself when I let Terry know yesterday, I'm like, I think we should do this virtually because obviously I don't want to be around him when I'm dealing with something and potentially get him sick.

Kimberly/terry (07:39)
Thank you. Me and Bob, by the way, not just me. Yeah. No.

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (07:40)
And another part of it, you are welcome.

And Bob, I don't, well, I definitely don't want to get Bob sick. You guys do not want to be around Bob when he is not feeling

well. Such a grouch. But but another element of it was just honoring myself and realizing that, you know, the best course of action for me is to focus on getting well as quickly as possible, which means stay here, stay hydrated, get the rest that I need. And then as I feel better and better, I continue to focus on what I can do.

which will be a little more every day because that's just how the body works. The power that made the body can heal the body. And I truly believe that. And the other thing you've got to focus on, which Terry and I are horrible at, but I really try just to get better. And that is maintaining your sense of humor. No matter what you're dealing with, whatever setback life has thrown your way, if you can find a way to, A, look around for things you have to be grateful for, I should know it as well.

Kimberly/terry (08:30)
Mm.

Yeah.

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (08:42)
But B, what can you laugh about? Where can we find lightness even when things feel kind of gloomy? So thank you, Terri, for helping me laugh today.

Kimberly/terry (08:51)
group

Absolutely. It's not, it's not that difficult to make each other laugh.

so, well, awesome, awesome tip. Thank you for sharing that focus on what you can do. tip number three, and I'm actually dealing this with this right now. haven't shared with you yet, but treat your healing like it's training. So just like when you go and train, takes, it takes effort, right? Well, so does recovery as well. You, you want to be very, very mindful, when it's time to recover. And that means.

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (09:10)
Yep.

Kimberly/terry (09:32)
things like consistent sleep, for example, making sure that you get a really solid night's sleep, gentle movement, or perhaps anti-inflammatory nutrition. You can actually check out our episode 30, 30 actually with Chef Maria. She shared some really great tips, some anti-inflammatory foods as well, natural foods. And then of course you want to give your body the same love you give a training schedule. So for example,

this last week for about nine days now, actually more than a week now, I've had sciatica issues. So, which is not normal for me. And I've been dealing with this throbbing pain in my lower back running down my glute, now for over a week. And, you know, we both have pretty busy schedules, very active schedules, both Kimberly and I, and this week I've really had to be a lot more mindful about icing.

I've had to be more mindful about massage. I've had to be more mindful about making sure I get those anti-inflammatory foods in my system so I can recover. you know, doing moist heat, whether it be, I just did a bath yesterday, a bath with some Epsom salt yesterday to try to recover with some ice therapy after that. several things have been going through in order to get better faster. I've been kind of scaling back in terms of the amount of

activity and you know a couple of my higher impact classes and focusing a lot more on queuing rather than doing so just being mindful I think the 30 something or 40 even 40 something me wouldn't have been that mindful with my recovery or taking it and no not at all or taking it as seriously but really you know truly you know know that when you treat your healing like training

Like Kimberly said, you will get better faster. You'll come back stronger. It'll be so much less of a headache. At first, I was pretty bummed the first couple of days. then I thought, OK, you need to just step back for a moment, take a nice deep breath, appreciate this downtime a little bit. What can you do? Like Kimberly said earlier, what is it that you can do? And focused on the solutions rather than the problems. And it's been working out. I'm turning the corner finally.

and feeling pretty good about it. So I know that you can too.

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (11:59)
Well,

I appreciate you sharing that with me. And if there's anything I can do to support you, that's the first he's brought me in on the fact that he was dealing with that leads to actually the next tip. And that is to stay connected to your community. Because now I get to say, even though even though you may not know this about Mr. Terry Shorter, but he prefers to kind of just deal with things all by his little lonesome. But now I, as his friend, get to say it.

Kimberly/terry (12:08)
Yeah

Ha

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (12:28)
Anyway, I can support you. There's anything I can do as you're moving through this. Or if I have ideas, maybe I or someone I know or maybe a past client has dealt with this and I've learned modalities through my own experience that I could share, things like that. But staying connected to your community way too often when we're dealing with any kind of setback in life, whether it is physical or mental, emotional, we have such a tendency, I think often, many of us at least, myself included, to feel like we don't want to bother anybody.

Kimberly/terry (12:30)
I appreciate that.

Mm-hmm.

Mm-hmm.

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (12:59)
We just want to move through it and deal with it on our own and you know, get to that. I'll be fine. I'll get to the other side. I'm fine. I don't need support, but we do need support. You know, we are hardwired for connection. We're not hardwired to be alone, not in the happy times, but not in the challenging times either. So who can you connect with if you're going through a setback in life that can actually give you the support you need to have an even greater comeback?

Kimberly/terry (13:16)
Mm-hmm.

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (13:27)
to give you the encouragement, just a kind word, or maybe they can be part of you focusing on what you can do. Can you still go for a walk? Go for a walk with a friend. Have lunch with someone that you care about, just to be able to make a connection again and feel the support of knowing that there are people in your life that do care about you. They're rooting for your rise and their encouragement can help you move through whatever the setback is. So highly encourage it.

Kimberly/terry (13:54)
Thank you. So

as soon as you're better, I'm going to need a massage just so you know. Okay, so

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (14:03)
And it was sciatica, yes? my. my.

Kimberly/terry (14:06)
Yep, feeling it, feeling

it, feeling it.

So thank you for tip number four. And the last one, tip number five is simply rewrite the narrative, right? Kind of your brain doesn't know what, you can kind of just kind of change your paradigm, just make a paradigm shift instead of saying I'm behind, perhaps say I'm building a stronger foundation or instead of saying, you know, I can't stand this setback instead, perhaps saying, say, you know, I love this comeback that I'm making right now.

So just simply flipping yourself talk, because your story truly it's not over. It's just simply evolving. And so if you can, you know, kind of find the brighter side, the lighter side, the more positive side, I've got this, this sweatshirt, this, sweatshirt that I'm wearing right now. It says always optimistic. And, it was given to me at the yoga expo this past weekend by this really sweet, husband and wife that started this company.

2020 during the pandemic and their whole idea was, you know, it's all about our mindset. It's about, you know, what we tell ourselves, you know, if we think it's doom and gloom and the world's coming to an end and everything's going to, you know, going down the toilet, then that's going to be your belief system. That's going to be the direction that you're moving in. But if you think otherwise, if you think optimistically, you know, on the brighter side and change that narrative,

Things truly can get better. It will get better. That's what you will attract And so it was nice to meet them They gave me this because they saw me walking by and they say you need this this sweatshirt So thank you Peter and thank you Karen so much for the awesome always optimistic sweatshirt I love it if I can wear it every single day I would So just rewrite that narrative and it'll make a world of difference

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (15:57)
Yeah.

Yeah.

You know, I think with what you're saying, it goes back to the gratitude as well. mean, part of rewriting the narrative and having that level of optimism is a recognition that you always get to decide what you're going to focus on and how you choose to see it, your perspective. And so in any scenario you ever find yourself in, you can look around and find things to be upset by, to be frustrated by, to be angry all day long. Right. And in that same scenario, in any scenario, you can always look around in your life.

Kimberly/terry (16:20)
Mm-hmm.

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (16:35)
and find things to appreciate. Even the fact that I can't teach my classes tomorrow, but I've already started thinking about what can I get done as far as doing some writing or some emails I need to take care of or some administrative work that I'll actually have the time to do that I don't normally get to do. I did mention that, right?

Kimberly/terry (16:37)
for sure.

Or just some plain old good old fashioned rest too, by the way.

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (17:04)
Okay noted. Thank you. So that too. I mean, who knows? I I am not afraid to binge Netflix. I'll do it. Like don't, don't think I won't.

Kimberly/terry (17:15)
And what show would it be? there any particular show that's on deck right now? Because I need to know too. As I'm laying there and icing.

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (17:26)
You know the one that I'm tempted to look at that a lot of people have been telling me about, but I'm kind of nervous too. And yet I'm kind of curious too, because I love, like, you know me, I love social experiments. I love seeing how human psychology unfolds. People are telling me about a show that I'm a little leery of, but married at first sight.

Kimberly/terry (17:29)
Mm, what's that?

Okay.

huh.

Okay, I saw the trailer for that.

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (17:52)
I don't fully understand other than it is kind of designed where experts match people together and they, you know, move through this experiment and see if they can find love. I am both scared and fascinated at the concept.

Kimberly/terry (18:09)
All right, well, you're going to have to let me know how you like it on Monday after you finish. What's that?

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (18:12)
You thought I was going say something martial arts, didn't you?

You thought I was going to say something martial arts based.

Kimberly/terry (18:18)
I

did, I actually did, but that sounds just as interesting. yeah, once, once you've wrapped that wrap up your binge, let me know how that one goes. I love it. So that's it. Those are our five, hopefully helpful, easy to implement. love using that word implementable strategies that we hope can help you bounce back stronger redefining success in this current season.

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (18:21)
Maybe.

I was actually going say that word.

Kimberly/terry (18:48)
focusing on what you can do, treat your healing like training, stay in the community, which I, yes, I have to do, I have to improve in that's my area of improvement and then rewriting the narrative. So have you ever come back from a setback? We would love to hear your story.

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (19:08)
inspire us. And absolutely, if you have someone in your life who is dealing with a setback of some kind, please do share this episode with them so that they have the tips at their fingertips. don't know that it does. Kimberly/terry (19:21)

Kimberly Spreen-Glick (19:38)
