Freezy (02:01)
Happy juice.
Good good woo woo how are y'all? Hey!
Kimberly/terry (02:19)
So good. So happy you're here. Yes. We appreciate you guys joining us and let everybody know where are you? Where are you coming in from? Where are Where are you located?
Freezy (02:29)
Well, I always like to say I'm a Maryland girl by the heart, but I'm coming from Texas and Frisco where our family lives now.
Kimberly/terry (02:36)
Okay.
First of Wait, no, where in Maryland are you from?
Freezy (02:41)
I'm from Prince George's County. β
Kimberly/terry (02:43)
β
Hello, I was born in Beemore, but from age two up, I grew up in Laurel.
Freezy (02:50)
okay. Well, I grew up in Oxnard Hill. I went to Oxnard Hill High School. Yeah. Yes. β yeah.
Kimberly/terry (02:53)
β way. Laurel Senior. That's awesome.
Small world. You guys are in Frisco now. I just had one of my closest friends visit this entire past week. She lives in Frisco. She's at the Lifetime there in Frisco. β nice. And we've been friends since seventh grade. Wow. Like 10 years. Julie Bessa, she's a member there. And then Tiffany Lou May is a friend of mine. She's an instructor over there. Yeah.
Freezy (03:10)
What's your name? Because you know that's where I'm at
Okay. yeah, know, okay. Sorry.
Kimberly/terry (03:21)
So yeah, so how is it in Texas in the Dallas area for you guys? Haven't been out there for a while.
Freezy (03:28)
Yeah, we've been here since July of 2019. I absolutely love it just being from the South. I'm from Fayetteville, North Carolina, so since we're doing shout outs to where we're from. β It's something about the South as far as just seeing any and everything underneath the sun, the connections, the culture, the vibe, the energy, the music. So for us, everything they said is bigger in Texas and we feel in every bit of that.
Kimberly/terry (03:31)
Okay.
Yeah, yeah, we are.
I love it. β so for both of you, I'm just curious because I don't know this. I think our listeners need to hear this too. How did you both find lifetime?
Freezy (04:06)
Yeah, that's good. You want me to kick it off? Yeah, I mean, Lifetime, you know, that came through David. So, yeah. So, I mean, let's take this step further. When we look at getting into the health and fitness industry in 2008, I was with a company called Lifestyle Family Fitness, which was acquired by Lifetime in 2011. Yeah. So from that,
Kimberly/terry (04:23)
I remember.
Freezy (04:27)
She always be joking on me like telling my story, but but from that we always were aware of lifetime We always looked at it. Oh, that was the big box is the mega gem But never really step foot into it So when we went from an act in the acquisition piece of it It was very eye-opening as far as this very whole holistic approach of all these things underneath one roof So that was in 2011 was the acquisition So I guess we could say lifetime found us in a way
Kimberly/terry (04:56)
Yeah. You may be why lifetime acquired lifestyle.
Freezy (05:01)
Yeah, I mean, it was the membership base. You had a strong membership base. No, no, I wouldn't say that. I think even if it wasn't lifestyle, any and everybody who is involved with health and fitness, that resonates with lifetime. And so many individuals that were in lifestyle was just...
Kimberly/terry (05:06)
No, I think it was you.
Mm-hmm.
Freezy (05:26)
Jumping at the bitch. She keeps on going in my ear make me little noise His inflections so funny to me when he speaks so sorry I should be at a separate computer That's why that's why she needs to be a different computer because I just this is just me but she'd be like But short and short and sweet lifetime 2011 been with the company since then
Kimberly/terry (05:39)
Hahaha
Freezy (05:54)
Shell's kind of sprinkled herself in here and there, but she's just been all around when it comes to performance style training. So I think that's where Lifetime gravitated towards her, wanting her proprietary information that she has and wants to be able to spread that amongst the masses. She helped develop a lot of the programming when it comes to UltraFit. So that's a little bit of a nutshell as far as how we came into our journey at Lifetime.
Kimberly/terry (06:20)
Love it. Nice. So what a big win for Lifetime to be able to work with the both of you to ensure your experience, your knowledge base with, you know, with the membership. That's great. Yeah, I was I was part of that acquisition team. And I remember meeting some of the amazing talent that became a part of our family from Lifestyle. And I actually didn't know that that was your story. I didn't know that you were one of the.
Freezy (06:41)
Yeah.
wow.
Kimberly/terry (06:47)
the team that joined us from that. that's just, that's just a cherry on the top right there. It's awesome. Cool.
Freezy (06:49)
β wow. Yeah, I was excited
when it all happened. It was the unknown. Obviously, just like with any acquisition you would think of the unknown of what you're about to walk into. But it was the greatest thing. I got actually the nudge from Shell to go into leadership prior to the acquisition. So during the acquisition, since I was in the position of leadership, it kind of allowed me to be somewhat accelerated to understanding the insides and outs of how the business works, which I'm
super grateful. So she always pushed me in that way to always challenge myself to become better. So when the acquisition happened, it kind of positioned me to be able to elevate to the next level.
Kimberly/terry (07:29)
Cool. right. And so speaking of acquisitions, β the better acquisition is you two finding one another. When did you guys both meet and how? They acquired each other.
Freezy (07:36)
I'll let you tell.
The acquired each other no funny well he he reached out to me on my space so that was a long time. Yeah yeah yeah my
Kimberly/terry (07:49)
My face! Stop it right now, Michelle. Are you for real? That's the best. I love it. I love it.
Freezy (07:59)
2006. By the time, yeah, because we only were speaking for a month. I just so happened that I was moving to train. I had taken four years off from the sport and two years before the upcoming Olympic Games I was sharing with my family that I was quitting my job in New York to move to North Carolina to train full-time for the Beijing Olympics.
Kimberly/terry (08:22)
Mm.
Freezy (08:22)
β
And it just so happened that where I moved to David lived about 45 minutes away and he had reached out to me randomly 30 days before I moved on my space when I was living in New York. So we spoke on the phone for 30 days and then we've been together ever since I moved down in North Carolina.
Kimberly/terry (08:41)
Wow, how about that? Great story. That's a story. Well, thank you for sharing that. Yeah, nothing happened by chance. That's for sure. No, definitely guided. What a great alliance. Well, we have a handful of questions for you that we'd love to dive into so we can get your insight, your wisdom from the life experience you both bring to the table. So thank you again for being here and being willing to share with us. The first question, I'll kick it off.
Freezy (08:53)
Right now. Ordered. Yes.
Yeah.
Kimberly/terry (09:10)
We'd just love to know what role has mindset played in shaping your success, both individually and together as a couple?
Freezy (09:20)
you want me to start? I mean, it's important just to be anchored and how you're making your decisions on a daily basis. Your yeses and your no's. So it's important to start with your why, like an uncompromised motivator. Of course, you people can say your core values, but just being clear, you know, having a clarity around what means the most to you and then making your daily β choices and decisions based on that. You know, now you can filter a little easier.
Especially when it's a hard decision. And sometimes, you know, it takes a lot of, you know, courage and belief, but that is all rooted in the way you think. And, you know, since I was young, I always tell David, I've had the mindset of it's always a way, you know, I always want to figure something out, bring a solution, you know, problem solve.
Kimberly/terry (10:08)
Hmm.
Freezy (10:15)
And so that's my expectation and how I move forward. And so that's the same mindset that we use in life and in athletics, challenging those thresholds to keep us excelling and transforming.
Kimberly/terry (10:29)
of that.
Freezy (10:32)
Yeah, would say as an individual, and then I'll talk about as a unit, individually, think growing up, it was a strong foundation that that was all and everything of how it now related to whatever it is that we were doing. I share the story a lot, getting up early mornings wasn't even like an option, pulling tires, working out, running heels. And what my parents were essentially teaching us was grit.
And then whenever we were now facing anything that felt like adversity, was like, well, we can get through this. This isn't that serious. So the foundation of what my parents instilled in both myself and my sister was huge and it helped translate into my adult life. And the other thing too, when it comes to being an individual, β I feel like it's almost less pressure because it's on you. You figure it out. If you do it, you don't do it. The risk factor isn't.
Kimberly/terry (11:00)
Mm-hmm.
Mm.
Freezy (11:29)
gonna be as crazy because you'll figure it out to go this way or that way. When it becomes a unit, it's so many other variables that are involved, there's so many other emotions and now it is higher risk factors. So to what Shail just said, she is more of the high risk. I'm gonna figure it out as I'm flying this plane. No, not that far, not that far, not that far. You are the scenario as far as building the plane as you're flying No, no, I'm gonna know how to fly the plane. I may not know where I'm going yet.
Kimberly/terry (11:37)
Yeah.
You
That's okay, yep.
Freezy (11:59)
Yes.
Kimberly/terry (11:59)
Alright.
Freezy (12:00)
She's like she's building the plane and flying it at the same time. And but that's her. And that's the thing I love about her because we're opposite. She would be like, I want to call myself conservative. I'm just I'm slower. I'm the tortoise and the tortoise and the hare. That's a fair analogy. Right. Boom. This goes to the fast one right here. Yeah. The bunny loose. Well, well, but still fast. But no, but no, I think this
Kimberly/terry (12:08)
Mm-hmm.
She's like, I don't know about that.
She said, didn't the bunny lose? Not in
this story, Michelle. Yeah, it's not a competition. This is the sequel.
Freezy (12:28)
Not in this story, right? This is a revamp story. Okay. But all in all,
it's coming out. We got to do a book on it. But just the slower process, but seeing that bigger picture. And that's that's that the way we complement one another as far as the mindset. And we instill a lot of those things into our kids too, when they're discovering who they are and their identity.
Kimberly/terry (12:50)
That was my next question is how does that work? I'm sure that works really well, especially with the balance to the yin and the yang for your kids. So that's great to hear.
Freezy (13:00)
Well, I don't know.
At the same time, I definitely see like they're always competing and now β I know. Right. And so it's that part. I'm like, OK, stop competing right now. It doesn't matter. And it's every little thing, too. So I don't know. It's a double edged sword.
Kimberly/terry (13:05)
Hmm. Hey, I wonder where they get that from. Yeah, it's weird really
Sure. Interesting.
Sure. Sure. you guys look sounds like you handle it really well. β no, that's great to hear. And let me ask you, were there any defining moments when you had to radically shift your mindset to break through a plateau or maybe a personal challenge, something maybe recent or something that really stands out historically?
Freezy (13:26)
Thanks.
I mean, I think about just the, I would say the difference in being an elite athlete for myself was mastering the way that I thought. It was a breakthrough for me to have the courage and β just the commitment and the discipline to even think that I could pull off making an Olympic team or making a world championship team. I remember as
Kimberly/terry (14:10)
Hmm.
Freezy (14:12)
races in college where I could win one weekend and lose the next just depending on who was lining up next to me. So things like that changed my outcomes. Why are you staring at me? I'm listening. But that's really where the difference was. I would lose from week to week.
Kimberly/terry (14:16)
Mm.
That's a man in He's being attentive. Man in love.
Freezy (14:39)
for in college just because I didn't have the strength and the way I thought about myself. So just being, like I said, clear in an older age β when it was time for me to take the risk on myself, I would say that was a real defining moment for me to lead the path and saying that I can truly pull this off. My defining shift was when I was overseas. β
This is shortly after college, I was playing in the Euroleague and I was so lost as far as from an identity standpoint, kind of living up to the expectations of what everybody else expected. So therefore my identity became the narrative of what everybody else was saying. So you should be in the NFL, you should be a pro football player. And when that wasn't happening, you feel like you're a failure. So when I was isolated overseas, I was away from a lot of that noise, a lot of what was being said.
Kimberly/terry (15:29)
Mmm.
Freezy (15:35)
on phones and watching TV and everything else and I was able to now find out more about self and that that process opened up my eyes and also allowed me to be able to champion something that already existed but it was just muted because of everything else that I was listening around me and the irony of that is when I came so now I came back with a strong foundation coming back to the states but the irony is now I got into a profession
Kimberly/terry (15:55)
Sure.
Freezy (16:06)
of health and fitness that I just obviously been around my whole life. But then I wanted to go back to that competing to show people I'm that guy, the ego and all that at the age of 22, being the number one trainer, being personal trainer of the year, get on billboards, get on magazines, like all those things I'm thinking in my head is now gonna fill up that void of what I should have been. But when I got those things, it was the aha moment again that
Kimberly/terry (16:15)
Yeah, still that guy.
Mm-hmm.
Freezy (16:35)
That wasn't it. And when I started to be able to pour into other individuals and bring the most out of them, that's when the light bulb moment went out for me. So that would be my big shift.
Kimberly/terry (16:36)
Yeah, that was it.
β That's huge. That is huge. that. that story and the vulnerability too. Yeah. Just the reminder that, everyone's looking for what we would call happiness, fulfillment in life. And it's an internal search. it's, and it's not even a search. It's an unveiling, right? And fulfillment can't happen. I don't care what a person sets as their goals for success.
Freezy (16:53)
Thank you.
Kimberly/terry (17:14)
the fulfillment piece can't lock in unless you're making a difference in someone else's life. I just truly believe that. So it's good for you. awesome. my mentors shared with me, they always said, he always said, you know, success without fulfillment is actually failure. And so I know exactly where you're coming from, I went through that same, same kind of similar thing. Interesting. Awesome. Awesome.
Freezy (17:19)
Yep.
Mmm.
Wow. β
Kimberly/terry (17:41)
So how is it that you are able to protect and nurture the strong, healthy mindset that you're talking about during seasons or even moments in life where you're dealing with heavy stress, maybe setbacks, injuries, self-doubt, how do you protect and nurture that?
Freezy (18:00)
Yeah, one, going back to the foundation of it all, right? We're centered heavily within our almighty β being at the foundation of what it is that we do. And those are that's the reminder. β The reality of being around individuals that can help elevate and bring that out of you help as well. You think of yourself or ourselves as coaches were always pouring into other individuals.
Kimberly/terry (18:04)
Mm.
Mm.
Freezy (18:27)
I usually give the visual of that sponge, where these sponges and we're just pouring it to all these individuals, but at some point in time that sponge runs dry and you need to be able to go back to that bucket, these other individuals that can pour into you as well. So being able to ask for help, surrounding yourself with people who can help elevate you as well, kind of helps out with that mindset.
Kimberly/terry (18:49)
I think that's huge.
Freezy (18:51)
Yeah, no, I mean, it's important just to make sure that what you're pouring into yourself, always talk about the feed and starve, like the constant push and pull every day of your habits. And so you got to think about, you know, where are you trying to go? What do you want to be? β And again, going back to that daily decision making and how you're filtering, β it comes back to that very thing. You know, what are you pouring into every day? The feed.
Kimberly/terry (19:12)
Mm-hmm.
Freezy (19:18)
those habits and those choices β to be ready for what you see for yourself and what are you starving, the habits that pull you away from that. So there's no neutral ground when I think about decisions and choices every day. And so which direction are you moving and it's how you have to hold yourself accountable to every detail.
Kimberly/terry (19:37)
Yeah. One of my favorite, I share this when I teach a lot and I know you've heard me talk about it, Terry, but I saw years and years ago, I think it was 2006, I saw Ayanna Vansant speak in Chicago at a conference. And I won't go into the whole story, but the quote that she landed on about halfway through after spending 30 minutes talking about how we are here to be of service. We are here to lift each other up. Every morning we should wake up and pray, dear God, how may I be of service to others today?
But about halfway through she paused and she said, don't get me wrong. And it got like really silent. And I had been giving her all these like mental and emotional high fives. I'm like, you are justifying like the way I want to live my life. Like, what do you mean? There's nothing else to say. But then she said, may my cup run over so that I may give freely and be in service to others. But what's in the cup is mine and don't you touch it. And so she repeated that a couple of times and it was like such a light bulb moment for me. Kind like you're talking about, like we're constantly
Freezy (20:30)
you
Kimberly/terry (20:36)
kind of squeezing the sponge, trying to pour into others and be of service. And so unless you make yourself, unless you're a proponent for yourself first, you cannot effectively, at least for a long period of time, be a proponent for other people, which is obviously what you want to do. So, but you got to protect what's in the cup. It's awesome. Exactly. And it's your choices.
Freezy (20:55)
Yeah, you got a feet within the cup You have to pour out with
yeah, and you got to pour out. shouldn't be in the cup Yeah
Kimberly/terry (21:02)
Heck yeah, the vacuum law. Yeah, most definitely.
Mm-hmm good stuff so
So that's you, that's how you protect and nurture your own mindset. So let me ask you, how do you help people find their own inner drive and their motivation? What are some of the best strategies or tools that I'll share again, some of the best strategies that I've heard was most recently again from you guys, those three A's from awareness to alignment to activation.
Right. That whole framework was like that hit me like like a ton of bricks. I love that. And so what are some other β ways that you help people find that inner drive and that motivation when maybe external rewards and routines kind of fade out because they do or people plateau. What do you what do you guys do? What's the key?
Freezy (21:49)
together.
Yeah, I'll go first and then I'll throw it at you. When it comes to any individual, one, everybody has a story. Everybody has these experiences that have shaped them. And what we tend to do, I think I'll speak for men, men always are trying to fix something, right? And the reality is talk less, listen more is something that I've learned as a coach. And then I was like, all right, I just got to apply that to a lot of things versus just my coaching.
Kimberly/terry (22:00)
Mm-hmm.
Mm.
Freezy (22:21)
And within that, now you ask these questions that start to unpack and they start to tell a story. So if I was to ask a question, real time example here, hey, hey, Kim, why are you here today at Alpha? And Kim will probably respond and say what?
Kimberly/terry (22:40)
because I want to get a great workout. I don't want to lose weight.
Freezy (22:44)
lose weight.
Okay, great. If you were to lose that weight, what would that do for you?
Kimberly/terry (22:50)
Give me more energy.
Freezy (22:52)
And with that energy, what would you do with it?
Kimberly/terry (22:55)
be able to spar with my twelve-year-old son. Good luck! Good luck with that.
Freezy (22:59)
Right, but you see it's more of
them now telling the story and then she just said her son so now it's even a closer emotional connection to that and then I would have started asking questions about the son bringing it back to her and then before the end of those two to three minutes she has a deeper why and then her connection to that why is going to keep her consistently coming back that goes beyond the motivation.
Kimberly/terry (23:03)
Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
Freezy (23:24)
Right, the awareness. Yeah. Yeah. And that's what we were talking about. You know, it starts with awareness. That's why, you know, even going back to what I said, understanding your uncompromising motivators and your core values, the awareness of that β will allow you to then align all of your actions and your choices and decisions. So now you know how to filter your yeses and your no's every day.
Kimberly/terry (23:25)
Yep, absolutely.
Freezy (23:48)
And that's just the active process. You're constantly activating that every single day to build towards where you need to go. And it evolves with time, where you're aligning to changes. So it's constant in that cycle, awareness alignment and activating is constant.
Kimberly/terry (23:51)
Yeah
Mm-hmm.
I love that. Well, I how you β well, first of all, again, going back to that framework, simple to remember. β Right. So simple to remember. We've talked about it a few times since we saw it week. you tell? β But also how you, David, you kind of.
Freezy (24:17)
Yeah.
Really? Aww.
Kimberly/terry (24:28)
Unpeel the layers when you're asking the questions to miss Kim who was doing alpha classes, right? Getting to the heart of the story getting to the heart of her reason why which yeah tells a story and is the main driver the main β point of inspiration. Yeah Sometimes you got to go a few layers deeper. Mm-hmm because there's the the extrinsic and intrinsic right so we want to get deeper into the intrinsic What inspires versus motivates so love it. All right
Freezy (24:31)
Mm-hmm.
Yes.
Mm-hmm. Right.
Kimberly/terry (24:57)
Got one more question for you. Knowing what you know now. Dun dun dun. What piece of advice would you give to your younger self? I love this question.
Freezy (24:59)
Do it.
Hehehehehe
You know your answer David? Yeah. Oh man.
Advice I would give is, you know, so much grace. And it's not about how quickly you can get it. It's about who you brought along with you in that journey. Don't make it about yourself.
Kimberly/terry (25:36)
Mm-hmm.
Freezy (25:42)
Yeah, so something along those lines of give yourself grace, understand that within your learnings, right? Because you're not necessarily failing, you're either learning or winning. That's Nelson Mandela. But more importantly, those that you bring along with you in your journey versus making it about yourself.
Kimberly/terry (25:51)
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Hmm, love it.
Freezy (26:03)
Yeah, I mean, β man, being so young, I just think about I have like this. My mom will always say, you think you're invincible. You think you're invincible. Like she still says it today. But yeah, I on my younger self. are invincible. know. That's accurate. No, no, no, no, not at all. β
Kimberly/terry (26:13)
Love it.
Hahaha
Freezy (26:29)
But no, I will just let myself know that it will all work out. I mean, it's been times where you think that you're in the worst situation at that time, at different points of your life. And just looking back, can just see my younger self and I just want to tell her in that moment, it's gonna be okay, it's gonna all work out.
Kimberly/terry (26:51)
Hmm. I love that. Yes. I think if all of us our younger selves had someone saying that to us on a regular basis We probably in a different place. It's good. We hope so
Freezy (26:58)
Yeah. Yes, yes. we gotta turn the tables. Y'all don't get off that easily. Now you gotta go
ahead and conversation with yourself, your younger self. What would y'all say?
Kimberly/terry (27:13)
You know what I'm gonna say. Ladies first. I mean, I'm gonna say what I tattooed onto my arm. I have two things actually, and they're both what I would tell myself. Number one, rise and shine. And if you can't shine, rise anyway, because in the rising, your shine will return. And two, choose love. In any and every situation you ever find yourself in, to be the presence of love is the greatest power you will ever have. And when you choose love, you light up the world. So always try to come from a place of love.
Freezy (27:28)
Mmm.
Kimberly/terry (27:42)
It's always a choice. Yeah. I think for me, try to find the light, try to find the fun, try to find the shine in any situation. Yeah. Because it's always there. I don't care. You're good at that. I do my best. I don't watch news. I try to stay away from news because that will definitely tarnish that shine. it's what hangs out with me so much because it's light and fun. Right. It's kind of shiny sometimes. A little bit. But.
Freezy (27:56)
Yay.
β man, nowadays.
Yeah. Like a moth to a flame.
β
Kimberly/terry (28:12)
Yeah,
that's what I live by. Enjoy the moments, be present. if I could tell myself, more present more often, enjoy the moments. Heck yeah. That's awesome.
Freezy (28:23)
Yeah, I mean time
I'm just looking at it right now time time time. I it just moves differently, you know at a certain age. So yeah
Kimberly/terry (28:34)
Yeah, especially
when you have little ones. They're like little timepieces. Yeah, right. How do your kids?
Freezy (28:38)

You got Harley nine going on 21. Yeah, β you got Bane. That's 11. He turns 12 in a couple of weeks here. Yeah. Yeah. Thank you.
Kimberly/terry (28:50)

Freezy (28:57)

My daughter's a Leo also. Her birthday is coming up in the next couple. We have 22 years old. gosh. No. No. No. It's crazy. Yeah, but you're right. Time goes by really fast. So you have to enjoy, enjoy the moments. So one thing we can't make more of. Nope. Nope.
