Self-Compassion in Thirty Seconds
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Think about the last time a friend told you she’d had a shocker of a day – dropped a ball at work, snapped at her kids, forgot the thing she promised. You probably said something like, “Oh, love, you’re human. Look at everything you’re carrying.” Now think about what you said to yourself, the last time the shocker of a day was yours.
That gap – between the voice we use for the people we love and the voice we turn on ourselves – is where self-compassion lives. And closing it doesn’t take a therapy budget or an hour of journaling.
In this episode, Narelle shares the research of Dr Kristin Neff, a very unglamorous Tuesday involving a double-booked diary, and a thirty-second practice you can do with one hand and a few honest words. Because your nervous system doesn’t grade on size – warmth registers as warmth.
In This Episode
• The gap between two voices – how differently we speak to a struggling friend and to ourselves, and why that gap matters
• Kristin Neff’s research on self-compassion and its physical doorway – a hand on your heart, a moment of warmth, and the words you would offer a friend
• One unglamorous Tuesday – Narelle’s double-booked diary, the harsh inner voice that arrived instantly, and the thirty seconds that changed who walked into the next hour
• A guided practice you can do along with the episode (unless you’re driving – in which case, just listen and save it for later)
Your Micro Moment for Today
Catch one harsh inner sentence today. Just one. You don’t have to fix it, argue with it, or feel differently. Just notice it – and offer the friend version instead.
Quotable Moments

“Oh, love, you’re caring too much. This is a scheduling problem, not a character flaw.”
— Narelle
“I’d never speak to a friend the way I’ve been speaking to myself. So just for now, I won’t.”
