Mindful Awareness at the Kettle
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Quick question: while your kettle boils, what do you do? If you’re anything like most of us – unload two dishes, answer a text, open the fridge for no reason, and mentally draft an email. Ninety seconds, four tasks, zero moments actually lived.
In this episode, Narelle takes gentle issue with what the wellbeing industry got wrong about mindfulness. We were told it needs equipment – a cushion, an app, a subscription, silence, and ideally a view. But mindfulness was never about adding something to your day. It was about arriving in the day you’re already having.
Your day is already full of natural pauses: the kettle, the school pickup line, the lift, the first sip of tea, the supermarket queue. This episode is about turning one of them into your bell – and Narelle is refreshingly honest about her own success rate.
In This Episode
• The pauses already hiding in your day – and where we usually spend them instead: in the past, in the to-do list, in someone else’s Instagram
• The kettle as a bell – kettle on, one breath, feet on the floor, one thing noticed. Kettle clicks off, life continues
• Narelle’s own kettle moment – catching herself mid-flight, two meetings rehearsed and an email drafted before the water had even boiled
• An honest word about success rates – why forgetting is genuinely fine, because a bell you didn’t have to build just keeps on ringing
• A portable version you can do right where you are – feel what’s holding you up, notice three sounds, take one slow breath
Your Micro Moment for Today
Pick one thing you already do every single day – kettle, gate, seatbelt, login screen. That’s your bell now. When it happens: one breath, feet on the floor, one thing noticed. And that’s the whole practice.
