Welcome back to another episode of the Win On Purpose podcast. In this episode, we are talking about counting the cost that's required of you to achieve a health transformation. Guys, this is something that so many people do not consider. They don't take the time to sit down and really think about what's going to be required of them and how it's going to affect their time and their energy and their focus and their investment financially and otherwise in order to achieve this, guys. So this is going to be very beneficial for you. I promise you you're going to get something from this and, if anything, it'll help you slow down and just think about what you're doing, what it's going to require for you and if this is even the right time for you to be pursuing a health transformation. So if you don't know if this is the right time to do it, then what you hear in this episode is going to help you make that decision. Guys, hope you enjoy. See you on the other side.
Speaker 2:Welcome to the Win On Purpose podcast From health and fitness, business, personal development, relationships and more. We promise you will find inspiration to help you win on purpose in all areas of your life journey. Now for your host, adam Kelly.
Speaker 1:What's up world, what's up everybody. Thanks for tuning back in to the Win On Purpose podcast. Very thankful for another day, an opportunity to come to you guys, share some wisdom, share some knowledge, share some insight, maybe help you refocus on your goals or get focused on your goals. You know we're entering into the new calendar year. You know this is a time where a lot of people get super motivated, super excited to start their journey and to start committing themselves to bettering their health, bettering their finances, bettering their relationships and everything so on, so forth. A lot of reflection happening around this time of year. So this is something I want to add on to your reflections. You know to kind of think about, because I like to keep it brutally honest with you guys and keep it real. You know I usually like to do more of like a positive message, but sometimes we have to have those real hard conversations and this is a similar situation to that. So, excuse me, we're going to do that, all right.
Speaker 1:So on this episode, this is not a Q&A. This isn't one of our normal episodes. It's not part of a series or anything. I do have a series that's about to start, on January 6th. There'll be next Monday. From today. I'm going to try to release this one on the day I'm recording it, which is the second. So the new series will start next week and it's called let's Talk Macros and basically it's going to be like a four, five, six part series of episodes where we're talking about basically breaking down all things macro. So what are macronutrients? You know, information, detail about protein, carbs, fats, things like that. It's going to be really good stuff, guys, really excited to share this with you, because it's going to empower you. It's going to give you the knowledge and information that you need as you're formulating your nutrition plan, or at least learning more about nutrition, learning more about how to feed and fuel your body properly. So it's definitely going to be helpful, because knowledge is power and the more empowered we are, the easier it is to make commitments and stick with those commitments. So that kind of leads into what I'm going to talk about today as far as making commitments and making sure that that commitment is right for you, not just for you as a person, but right for the season of life that you're in, guys, and this is one thing that a lot of people don't consider. This is one of the biggest stumbling blocks I see for people when they're starting their journey or when they're getting going or later on in their journey. I've dealt with this dozens of times when it comes to clients and even my own life and my own process and progress. So definitely this is going to be beneficial for anybody and everybody out there, regardless if you are new to diet and exercise or you're a little bit more seasoned. You can definitely glean something from this episode.
Speaker 1:So what we're talking about today is counting the cost before committing to a health transformation. All right, we want to count the cost. So I'm going to start with a little bit of a biblical story. Here in the Gospels, we see Messiah is talking to his disciples and basically he's telling them that you know you need to count the cost of what it's going to require of you in order to follow after me okay, to be my disciple and he gives a couple of different analogies. Like you know, like a general going out to war, you know he needs to count the cost. See, you know he needs to investigate his enemy because if he's going up against a much larger enemy and he didn't count the cost, he didn't prepare for that battle he's most likely going to lose and be embarrassed.
Speaker 1:Or you have the builders. You know they they are going to build a building and they don't take the time to count the cost of the material and the effort and the labor and everything that it's going to take, and they get halfway done and they run out of finances. Or they run out of help, and then they have to be embarrassed and stop their project and can't complete it because they didn't count the cost of what it's actually going to require of them, because everything sounds good in the beginning. Oh, you know, let's go to war, we're just going to take over and we're going to, we're going to end them because we're so bad. Or you know, hey, let's go build this building because it's going to be amazing, and we're only focused on the outcome, but we're not paying attention to the details of what it's going to take to get there. And, as they say, the devil's in the details, meaning we get slipped up on, we get, we slip up on the small things. Right, it's usually not the big things, it's those little things that we don't typically consider that end up being our downfall.
Speaker 1:So I want to help you guys prevent that by giving you a clearer perspective that you're going to need as you continue along your journey. All right, so you want to make sure that you count the costs before committing to anything, especially a health transformation, all right. So it doesn't matter if we're talking about switching jobs, if we're talking about getting into a relationship or ending a relationship, it doesn't matter if we're talking about having kids moving to a different state or a different city or a different part of the world, whatever it may be. You definitely want to make sure that you count the costs, and it is no exception to a health transformation, all right. So when I say health transformation, basically what I'm talking about I'm not talking about someone who's just trying to lose five pounds or get a little bit leaner or build a little bit more muscle. I'm talking about somebody that's starting from a place that they do not want to be in and they're going to have to change their entire body, their entire life structure, in order to become this new person. That's the health transformation I'm talking about.
Speaker 1:All right, so it's very important that we think about the time, energy, focus and investment that it will require in order to accomplish what we're committing to. Okay, those are four very important parts of anything that you commit to in life that you have to consider if you want to actually be successful or at least avoid a lot of the pitfalls and the roadblocks and things that we tend to run into because we don't consider these four things. And those four things again are time, energy, focus and investment. And you're going to see how this plays out in these pillars of health that we're going to discuss, no-transcript. In order to do it, how much energy is it going to require? Is it going to take from other parts of your life? How much focus is it going to require? So how much mental fortitude are you going to have to build up in order to go do this? If it's more challenging, it's more taxing, more tiring, or you just don't really like this form of physical activity, you're just doing it for the results, then it's going to require a lot more focus than if it's something that you really enjoy. So something to keep in mind. And also the investment. So that's a financial investment. We're talking about a gym membership. We're talking about, you know, home gym equipment. Also, the time investment, the energy and focus.
Speaker 1:Investment that kind of groups, all those three previous ones together into investment to take for you to have food readily available so you don't fall off your plan and go eat some things that you probably that probably aren't going to help you get to where you want to be. How much energy is it going to take, you know, are you going to be meal prepping once or twice a week? Are you going to do it every day? You know what is this going to look like. Do you need to do it before you go to bed so it's ready for you the next day because you have to get up early? You know, do you need to do it at the beginning of the day so that way you don't have to think about it the rest of the day. Like, you got to consider how much time, energy, focus and investment it's going to require of you for meal prepping.
Speaker 1:So same thing with just financially affording food. You know junk food is a lot cheaper, it's a lot easier to consume, it's a lot easier to get more. You know the value packs and family deals and things like that. Well, you got to consider how much money it's going to cost you in order to eat healthy. Now don't believe the misconception that eating healthy is so expensive compared to eating out or eating junk food because we're getting to a point with inflation and all that, that it's really not much of a difference. Actually, it's probably now cheaper to go buy your food, have more food for a longer period of time and eat healthier, than it is to go out and spend, you know, 10 to $20 on one meal. You can go, spend 10 to $20 at the grocery store, get you half a week's worth of groceries If you're conservative with that money and you know, boom, you've got several days worth of food rather than just a couple hours of satisfaction. So, all that being said, it's still a money investment into making sure that you have what you need. Maybe you need some sort of supplementation. You got to keep that in consideration. Weightlifting Everybody.
Speaker 1:If you want to actually better your health and become the best version of yourself, you need to be strength training. So how much time, energy, focus and investment is that going to require? Again, a gym membership or maybe home gym equipment? The time of your day? You know how are you going to allot this 30, 45 minutes, 60 minutes of time in order to get a good session in? You know the energy that it requires. If you're constantly fatigued from your life. How are you going to get the energy in order to actually put in enough effort in your training sessions to reap the benefits? You know focus you know how much mental drive does it take you to. You know, do you have to drive to the gym, which now requires more of a commitment than just walking out in your garage? You know all these different things we need to consider.
Speaker 1:And then also getting adequate sleep. You know how much time, energy, focus and investment does it require of you. We know we need about seven or eight hours of adequate quality sleep to function and fill our best. So what are you going to have to change in your life? What are you going to have to move around in order to do this? And if you are working two or three jobs and taking care of kids and a family and all these other things going on, you may not be able to afford seven, eight hours of sleep right now. And without being able to get that, it could potentially hinder your results or at least not give you as good of results if your sleep was on point.
Speaker 1:So definitely something you want to consider there. So those are like the four pillars of good health that all require, the same time, energy, focus and investment. And your budget is finite, the amount of hours per day you have is finite, your energy is finite, your motivation and willpower are all finite. So you have to consider these things, because once you run out, once you run out of willpower, once you run out of time, once you run out of focus, once you run out of money, everything stops and then you can't do anything. All right, so definitely, guys, these are huge things that we want to consider and count the cost.
Speaker 1:All right, just know, and and I'm, I don't. I don't believe in giving false promises, I don't believe in telling people that, oh, it's so easy, you just got to do this. I'm not about that, guys. I'm a realist. I understand how hard this journey can be, how much of a commitment it can be, and we have to understand that your life will have to look different than it does now. You cannot change your health and fitness and improve your health, living the same lifestyle that you're living now, because if you could, you wouldn't have to do anything. You would already be fit and be healthy and feel your best. So you're going to have to change the way your life looks now in order to accomplish what you're trying to accomplish. And what's even bigger than that is you're going to have to keep this new lifestyle if you want to keep those results. So this isn't just a six week challenge of losing some weight for your vacation and then you throw it all the wayside because now you're going to gain even more weight, you're going to feel worse, you're going to damage your health, you're going to damage your self-esteem and nothing good comes from that. Who cares if you look more fit on your vacation? If you throw it all out the window during your vacation and then go back to your old lifestyle that promoted bad health after your vacation, that doesn't really benefit you at all. So you know we have to understand that life is going to have to look different and if we don't have the time and energy and focus and investment and the resources to change our life, we're never going to change our health, guys, at least in the long term, something that we can sustain for life and feel better for as long as we live, all right. So again, make sure you're counting the cost, all right.
Speaker 1:If you try to change your entire life at once usually results in failure somewhere. Okay, so maybe, maybe you're successful in your weight loss journey, or your fat loss journey, or your muscle building journey, or your health improvement transformation journey. Maybe you're successful, but what does this end up doing to your relationships? What does it do to your work life? What does it do to your efficiency outside of the gym? How does it affect you as a person? Because I can promise you, I can promise you, if your life is a wreck, it doesn't matter if you have a six-pack. I promise it's not going to make your life better.
Speaker 1:Okay, you may think, because we tend to do this as humans, we tend to be a little bit irrational when we're thinking about where we want to be and we think, man, if I could just be leaner, if I could just be healthier, if I could just look better, if I could just have the body I want, then all of these good things are going to come to my life. And that's not the way it is, guys. You're going to be just as miserable with a six pack as you are with a tummy if your life is having to suffer in order to get to your goals. So now understand that there is going to be a compromise somewhere. You're going to have to make compromise in your regular life in order to again devote the time, energy, focus and investment to reach your goals. But if you're trying to force this process into your life rather than, or if you're trying to change your life to fit your goals, rather than making sure your goals can fit into your life, you're going to have a lot of problems, guys, and you're going to. It's probably not going to be good for you and I don't want to see you go through that. All right, I love you, I care about you, I want what's best for you and I want you to win on purpose. All right, and counting the cost is how we can make sure we win on purpose.
Speaker 1:So let me give you some examples. Say that you are changing jobs, you're changing careers all right, that's a whole life change that's happening. You got a whole lot of things that you're going to have to figure out. Or if you're moving to a different location, a different, even just a different part of the city, but especially if it's a different city, different state, different country, continent, whatever, like that's a whole life change that's about to come. If you're about to get married or maybe, unfortunately, a relationship is ending, your whole life structure is about to change. If you're about to introduce a kid into your life, you know you're about to have kids or have a child, or your kids are growing up and they're going to be moving out of the house soon. You're going to be an empty nester soon. This is going to change the way your life looks and you're gonna have to refigure things out.
Speaker 1:So you know, or you know, say that you get a bad diagnosis from the doctor and now you have to make changes in your life and your treatment plan in order to try to solve this health issue. So we have to keep all these things in mind because, again, everything is a trade-off in life. There's no solutions, there's only trade-offs. So where is the trade-off coming? Where are you trading time, energy, focus and investment from your life in order to accomplish your goal? Because, by all means, you should definitely accomplish your health goal.
Speaker 1:If you have a health transformation that you know needs to happen, you should definitely do it, because if not, you're going to die sooner and you're going to be more miserable on the way there. However, if you're trying to change all aspects of your life at the same time, like you're trying to renew your entire life. Maybe midlife crisis or again some unfortunate circumstances happen and you're trying to change your life, then this can really make committing to a health transformation very difficult Because, again, it's going to take a lot from you in order to do this on a regular, daily basis, building those habits, doing the work, checking those boxes to make sure that you end up winning in the end. Because, again, it doesn't matter how you can lose 30 pounds just by not eating and staying on the treadmill for eight hours a day. Now, you may croak out before you get there, but you can do it and you can lose that weight. But if you're not healthier, what does it matter If you can't sustain it? What does it matter If you don't feel better? What does it matter If you can't sustain it? What does it matter If you don't feel better? What does it matter Like? Who cares if you lost the weight, if you gain it all back? Who cares if you lost it? If you feel worse than before you lost it? Who cares if you lost it but you burned all your relationships and you ruined your career and all these other things because you didn't count the cost of what it's going to take for you to get there and balance life in the mix of all that. All right. So the same thing I tell you know, I work with a few um competitive bodybuilders and people in that world, and you know this is a conversation we have to have every year when they are about to enter into their competition season.
Speaker 1:We have to look out into the future and say, okay, well, what do you have coming up? Like you know, is there anything that can potentially happen in this next three months, six months, nine months, however long we're going to be prepping and competing for this season? What is in the future that is going to hinder you or at least make this process a whole lot harder than it needs to be? Because, especially as an athlete, your goal is always to be as competitive as possible and to bring your best. Every time, especially as a physique competitor, it's always about outdoing your last performance and your last showing, which is going to take a lot of requirements from you, a lot of time and commitment and energy and effort and focus and investment in order to do so. So why would you even risk giving up all of that time and energy and focus and money, financial investment in order to try to compete if you're not going to actually be able to do the work because of your life circumstances and you get to the end and you just wasted all of that because you don't actually do what you set out to do, which is to be your best. So this is not to talk you out of wanting to accomplish things, not to talk you out of wanting to have goals or wanting to compete or anything like that, because the reality is life.
Speaker 1:Is life like we think we have it figured out? We think we understand what's going to come next? We think we can can predict anything, but we can't, guys. Life is completely out of our control, regardless of how much we lie to ourself and think that we have things under control. Anything can change tomorrow. You can get fired tomorrow unexpectedly, your business could have to close down unexpectedly, you could get sick, someone could die. Things happen every day that we don't expect. So don't have the perspective of oh well, I don't know what's going to happen. You know, maybe maybe something could happen, maybe you know it's been a while since something bad happened, maybe maybe something will happen, and then you don't try at all.
Speaker 1:I'm not saying that. I'm just saying if you know that. For example, you know that in March you're going to be moving to Florida and you're like, hey, you're going to be moving to Florida and you're like, hey, you know, I need to lose 50 pounds. I know it's going to take me six months to a year. However long we map it out, for that's probably not a good goal anymore, because if you're going to have to move to a whole different state one, we're going to have to, probably if we continue to work together. For example, you're going to have to switch to online coaching, which is a whole different ballgame than in-person training and coaching, and Switch to online coaching, which is a whole different ballgame than in-person training and coaching, and so much of your life is going to be changing throughout that process. It's going to be extremely hard to keep these habits intact through that process and then actually continue that in this new location. So it may be a situation where you need to wait until after that move happens, wait till you get settled, wait till life kind of has that normalcy feel again, and then pursue these goals.
Speaker 1:You know um lots of different circumstances. You're expecting a child, you're pregnant or your wife is pregnant. You know, although your wife was pregnant. You're not the one dealing with it. You're not the one dealing with the body changed and all that. Your life is going to be affected. I'm sorry to tell you, fellas, I have four kids. Your life is going to be affected. You're going to lose a lot of sleep during that process, especially once the baby gets here. Sleep is going to be off. Your training schedule is probably going to be thrown off. Your work schedule is going to be affected. All of these things your time, energy, focus and investment are going to be primarily for this new beautiful child that you have.
Speaker 1:So trying to start a year transformation and you're about to have a child in two months probably is not the best time to do it. You may wait until you get a little bit more used to the situation. Sleep is more normal. You know things like that. Then start your transformation journey, okay, so again, I'm not trying to talk you guys out of anything. I just really want you to count the cost and understand what is at risk, what the reward is and what it's actually going to take to get there. This is a big part of what I do with my clients is mapping out the future, looking into the future, using vision and saying, okay, well, what are we going to have to look out for in the future? What road roadblocks you know are coming? What trips do you have planned? What events are going to be happening? What life changes are going to happen in the midst of this timeframe that we're working together, that we're either going to have to a work around or be maybe just pivot and do something different, or just not pursue this right now, because I don't want to take your money and you commit to something that you're going to fail at.
Speaker 1:Because I'm not in this to make a bunch of money. I'm not in this to try to be the most popular trainer in the world. I'm in this to help as many people as I can, and I cannot help someone who is not able to do the things that are required of them in order to achieve their goals. I can only do so much. I can lay out the perfect plan. I can make sure that every single session is super effective you know progressing every week. I can make sure that I'm holding you accountable as far as checking in with your diet and your body weight. All these different things that I institute on my side for accountability only go so far.
Speaker 1:At the end of the day, you're going to have to do the work. You're going to have to do the be the one that's waking up and getting after it. You're going to have to be the one that makes themselves go to bed on time. You're going to have to be the one that does your meal prepping, that does the steps in cardio. You're going to be the one that has to actually put the effort into your lifts and you're going to have to be the one that actually spends the time managing your stress.
Speaker 1:So I can only do so much as your coach and like I tell all my clients if you're listening to this and your client you've heard this before guaranteed, you are the captain of this ship. Okay, the ship is your body, all right, and it's your journey. You are the captain of this ship. I, what am I? I'm not the driver, I'm not the captain, I'm just the navigator. Okay, I'm the one with the big map who's saying okay, this is where you're trying to get. You're trying to get to Africa from North America, all right, we have a few different journeys that we can take because we have different oceans, but this is what these different journeys are going to require. This is what you're going to have to do. This is what could get in the way and what could cause you to stumble or fail or put you at risk, and then this is what I think is going to be your best option, based on how much I've navigated these seas with other people and with myself.
Speaker 1:But if you're not willing to drive that ship, if you're not willing to do the steering, if you're not willing to, you know, put in that work each day to get to this destination, we're just going to be lost at sea together and just be looking at each other like, well, what do we do from here? Because things didn't work out, and I don't want that. Okay, it doesn't make me feel any better when my clients are the reasons that they're not getting results. That makes me feel worse, because these people have entrusted me to help them solve their problem, and I always stress you know this the problem, at the end of the day, is yours, so you're going to have to be the one that solves it. I'm going to help you and I'm going to support you in any and every way that I can, because I want you to win, but you're going to have to be the one that does it. Okay, you're going to have to be the one that makes the sacrifices on your time and energy and focus and investment in order to get there. Okay, I can only help you so much. So make sure, guys, that you're counting the costs before you start this journey, because here's probably the biggest reason why I say all this A lot of people will spend years and years trying to accomplish a goal, and then a lot of people will actually eventually accomplish that goal, and that's great.
Speaker 1:Okay, no-transcript. Okay, because either way, the time's going to pass. Who cares if it takes you six months or six years? If, at the end of that time period, you're at your goal, everything's cool.
Speaker 1:However, the problem that we have is there's an effect that happens to us on a psychological level when we fail at things. All right. So there's a lot of positives that come from failure. That's where we learn, that's where we grow, that's where we learn, that's where we grow, that's where we develop understanding, and that's good and all okay. But there's a negative psychological effect that comes with failing often, especially when we are the cause of our failure, and this can really hinder the way that we see ourselves, the way that we see our capabilities, our self-belief, our self-esteem All of these things can really be destroyed if we continue to fail at something over and over and over again.
Speaker 1:Okay, and we don't want to do that, especially when it comes to our health, because every failure just reminds us of how bad we are and what situation we're in and how hopeless we feel. And then we just keep reinstilling that until eventually we just say forget it, I'm not supposed to be healthy, I'm just going to quit and I'm just going to be happy being overweight and feeling worse and having no energy, and this is just my new norm. I'm just going to pop drugs, I'm going to pop caffeine, I'm going to pop all these things and do all these things to kind of bandaid my situation, to make it a little bit more durable or doable. But this is just where I'm at, because we don't have any belief in our capabilities, because we've let ourselves down so many times. And a lot of this has to do with not just having a poor plan or a poor program or not having the accountability, or just life being life, but a lot of it comes down to what we're talking about today, which is not counting the cost of what it's going to require from you, from your time, energy, focus and investment in order to achieve your goals, okay, and then again, most importantly, to sustain those goals, all right. So I hope this is helpful for you, for you guys. I hope you really think about what I'm saying, that you really take it to heart, that you sit down and you get a pen a pen just like you see here if you're on the video. I like pen and pads. I like to take physical notes and actually write down what your goals are, how you plan on getting there, what actions you're going to take in order to get there, and what you're going to have to sacrifice and give up in order to make it happen. Because, again, it sounds great to just go to the gym, work out, eat healthy meal prep, get plenty of sleep, manage stress. All these things sound great and easy to implement, but they're really not, guys, because we're talking about multiple life changes that you're trying to instill. Okay, so it'd be better just to take your time and then, if anything, you know.
Speaker 1:My last point on this actually, I just remembered I had one more point is even if the timing isn't good for health transformation commitment. You should still okay, this is a big one, guys you should still be practicing some sort of restraint, especially when it comes to our eating. We shouldn't just be eating like we don't care about ourselves and building healthy habits, even if it's on a micro level. Okay, do not allow your life circumstances become an excuse to continue trashing your health. All right, so maybe this isn't the best time for you.
Speaker 1:Maybe you're like you know, I'd love to hire a coach. You know, coach ak, I'd love to work with you. I know you're gonna help me get there. I've seen how many people you've helped. I've seen what you've done in your own journey. I know this is a path to get there. It's just probably not the best path right now because of X, y and Z. Hey, I'm totally cool with that. But what can you do now? Okay, are you going to allow that to just be an excuse to where you go off the deep end and you just keep eating like crap and you keep not moving your body and not taking care of stress and not getting adequate sleep?
Speaker 1:What can we actually do from here and this is what I usually start with with a lot of clients, anyways is like you know, yeah, we want to be here, to where our eating is on point, our training is on point, our cardio is on point, our sleep is on point, stress management's on point. Yes, that's where we want to get to. But where are we at now? How far away are we at from all that? And what can we implement today that's going to help us start building towards that and compounding that interest over time to get closer and closer to that.
Speaker 1:So maybe it's just eating a little bit less junk food, maybe it's just getting an extra 10 minutes of sleep, turning things off a few minutes earlier. You know, maybe it's um, starting with just taking a couple walks per day. You know a couple 10 minute walks per day, just when you can fit it in time. Or you know, doing a few pushups at night before bed or when you get up in the morning, like, what can you do today and start implementing now to where, when life eases up or your circumstances change or you get past whatever is preventing you from being able to pursue your transformation, you're already that much further ahead. One and two, you've been building that mentality that it's gonna require of you to take it to the next level and keep progressing, all right.
Speaker 1:So don't just use the excuse of you know what life's crazy I've got all this going on, or blah, blah, blah, this health issue, whatever. So I'm just not gonna do anything for now. I'll wait till later, because later's not promised. Guys. We could die at any moment. All right, life is very short and very fragile, so this is not an excuse this is not your podcast to be like boom see, that's what I need.
Speaker 1:I knew I couldn't do it, I knew this isn't the best time.
Speaker 1:I knew I should just wait. Don't do that, guys. Yes, transformations are hard, they take time, but it's worth, worth it and you can do it for sure. I just want to make sure that you're successful and that you can keep that success for the rest of your life, or at least keep building on that success, and not have to deal with what I've had to deal with the back and forth and the guilt and everything that comes with it, and what so many of us have had to deal with, guys. All right, so you guys use this to your advantage. I appreciate you for sticking with me through this pretty long rant, but I feel like it's very beneficial for anybody that's starting out or continuing on their journey to understand these things, all right. So whatever you do with this information, guys, make sure you do something good for yourself, something good for your health, something good for those you care about and, whatever you do, make sure you count the cost and win on purpose. Talk at you next time.
