Tyler grew up in Seattle, exploring the North Cascades before graduating from West Point in 2001. He served over 20 years as an Infantry and Special Forces officer, deploying twelve times to lead specialized teams on high-risk combat operations across Iraq, Afghanistan, and beyond. Decorated with five Bronze Star Medals, including one for Valor in a hostage rescue operation in Syria, he built a career in leadership under extreme conditions.


Now, as a Managing Partner at Cairn Leadership Strategies, Tyler uses outdoor adventure as a catalyst to build the best leadership development programs possible. He has taught strategic studies at West Point, trained elite military units, and worked with leaders across government and business. As a Field Instructor for the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), he leads extended expeditions in rock climbing and wilderness backpacking. He holds degrees in Spanish, German, and Defense Analysis, and is completing a Master’s in Outdoor Recreation Economy at CU Boulder. He is also a Wilderness First Responder, Leave No Trace Level Two Trainer, and an American Mountain Guide Association (AMGA) Single Pitch Rock Climbing Instructor.
