Ep. 64 Legacy in Motion: Planning the Future of Family Businesses with The Beringer Group
Show Notes:
In this episode of Business Growth Spotlight, host Heidi Schalk sits down with Ted Beringer, founder of The Beringer Group, to explore the often-complex world of family business transitions. With decades of experience in investment banking and consulting, Ted shares his deep insights on how legacy businesses can successfully navigate leadership shifts, whether transitioning to the next generation or preparing for an outside sale.
Ted dives into the importance of early planning, the emotional and financial dynamics of family leadership handoffs, and why running regular “fire drills” is essential for long-term success. He also opens up about his own entrepreneurial journey, and how he defines success through the families his firm helps protect and grow their wealth.
This conversation is packed with practical strategies and hard-won wisdom for any founder, business owner, or advisor supporting multigenerational business growth.
Bio
Ted founded The Mid-Atlantic Companies, Ltd. in 1979 with the goal of serving the financial needs of private and closely held business owners and their families. The firm grew to become a national presence, employing over 100 people and operating offices across the United States. In 1999, Mid-Atlantic was acquired by First Union Corporation (now Wells Fargo).
In early 2000, Ted and his son Chris founded The Beinger Family Office. Later that year, they, along with a few select partners, established The Beringer Group. The company focuses on providing business owners with transition, corporate development, and liquidity options, specializing in the “keep/sell” decision and its impact on family businesses. The Beringer Group has worked with some of the most well-known family businesses in America.
Ted has been a featured speaker at numerous business events and family meetings across the country. He is a graduate of the University of Buffalo.
