Why does being seen feel so uncomfortable...

even when it's something you deeply want?

In this episode, we're unpacking the fear of being fully seen and how visibility wounds, rejection wounds, and nervous system patterns can quietly keep us stuck playing small.

If you've ever found yourself overthinking a post, hiding parts of yourself in relationships, shrinking your voice, avoiding opportunities, or feeling like you're constantly performing instead of truly expressing who you are, this conversation is for you.

We'll explore how past experiences can teach the brain that visibility is unsafe, why being authentic can feel vulnerable, and how these patterns show up in relationships, business, leadership, and everyday life. Most importantly, we'll talk about what healing actually looks like, and why it's less about becoming fearless and more about learning that you can be seen without abandoning yourself in the process.

This episode is a reminder that your worth is not determined by other people's approval, and that authenticity, connection, and self-expression are possible without sacrificing who you are.

If you're ready to stop shrinking and start showing up as your authentic self, this conversation will meet you exactly where you are.

Welcome to Rewrite Her Voice, the podcast that takes a bold and compassionate look at the inner critic living rent-free in your head. You know the one. She's judgmental, perfectionistic, and never misses a chance to tear you down. But here's the truth: that voice isn't truly you. Each week we dive into an honest conversation with powerful stories and practical tools to uncover where that inner mean girl came from, why she shows up, and how to rewrite her script. It's time to reclaim your inner voice, break the cycle of self-sabotage, and speak to yourself with the kindness and strength you deserve. If you're ready to stop letting your inner mean girl run the show and start showing up as your most authentic, empowered self, let's go. Oh hey! Welcome back. I am so pumped that you're here today. Question: What if the reason you keep pulling back isn't because you're scared of success? What if you're scared of being seen? Not in some dramatic way. I mean like really seen. Seen enough that people have opinions, seen enough that some might misunderstand you, seen enough that you can't hide behind perfection anymore. Because if we're being honest, and I hope that we are, most of us say we want visibility, right? We want the business, we want the deeper relationships, we want to share our voice, we want to lead, we want to be fully ourselves. And then the moment we're given the opportunity, we hesitate. We overthink the post, we rewrite the email 17 times, we decide we are not ready yet. We tell ourselves we'll start next week. Sound familiar? So for years I thought this was a confidence problem. If I could just become more confident, more healed, more secure, then showing up would feel easy. But what I've learned is that confidence isn't usually the thing missing. Safety is. Because your nervous system isn't asking, do you want this? It's asking, what will this cost? And for a lot of us, being visible has felt expensive before. Maybe you were criticized when you spoke up. Maybe you were told that you were too emotional or too loud or too sensitive, too ambitious, too much, too, too, too, too. Blah. Maybe people celebrated you as long as you stayed within certain boundaries. But the moment you became fully yourself, things shifted. So your brain learned something. Being seen isn't always safe. And if your brain believes visibility equals pain, it doesn't matter how badly you want something, part of you will always keep finding ways to stay hidden. Not because you're lazy, not because you're self-sabotaging, but because somewhere along the way your system learned that invisibility felt safer than exposure. And honestly, that makes a lot of sense. I see this show up all the time. Sometimes it looks like hiding your needs and relationships because you're afraid you'll be too much. Sometimes it looks like becoming a different version of yourself depending on who you're around. You know that feeling when people love you, but somehow you still feel lonely? Because they're connected to the version of you that's performing, not the version that's actually you. That's really scary. And sometimes it shows up in business too. You spend months preparing, taking courses, tweaking your branding, perfecting your offer, researching one more thing, and from the outside it looks productive. Sounds productive, doesn't it? But underneath, you're trying to avoid exposure because launching means being seen. Posting means being seen. Selling means being seen, and being seen means someone might judge you. Someone might disagree with you. Someone might not like you. And your nervous system says, yeah, let's not do that. The tricky part is that visibility wounds and rejection wounds often travel together. One says, it's not safe to be seen, and the other says it's not safe to be fully myself. So we spend years trying to become easier to love, more agreeable, more manageable, more acceptable, more palatable. And eventually we forget where the performance ends and we begin. That's why healing this part isn't about forcing confidence. It's not standing in the mirror repeating affirmations while your nervous system is screaming. It's slowly teaching yourself that you can survive being seen. Authentically seen. You can survive someone disagreeing with you. You can survive not being everyone's cup of tea. You can survive taking up space, and maybe most importantly, you can survive staying connected to yourself when other people don't understand you. Because healing isn't becoming fearless. Healing is learning that authenticity no longer has to cost you yourself. It's learning that visibility and safety can exist in the same room. It's learning that being seen does not determine your worth. Not praise, not criticism, not followers, not approval. None of those things get to decide your value. And if you're listening to this thinking, I'm so tired of shrinking, I want you to know something. The goal isn't becoming louder. The goal is becoming more honest. More honest about what you want. More honest about who you are. More honest about the parts of yourself you've been hiding to stay accepted. Because the real freedom isn't getting everyone to like you. Sorry. The real freedom is no longer abandoning yourself so they will. So I want to give you a challenge and a few questions, okay? Today, this week, this month, I want you to show up in the fully weird, fully silly, fully playful, fully girly, fully frilly, the fully version of you. I want you to show up that way. It's gonna feel scary. It's gonna feel very uncomfortable, but I can promise you the more you do it, the more freeing it becomes, and you will notice a visible weight difference in your body, okay? I'm not saying you're gonna lose like 10 pounds, but I'm telling you, you will feel lighter. The burden that you carry will feel lighter. Now, here are the few questions, okay? When did being seen stop feeling safe? What part of you believes visibility could cost you love? Where are you performing instead of expressing? And what might become possible if you stopped making your worth dependent on other people's approval? If today's conversation resonated with you, if you found yourself nodding along thinking, yeah, that's me, then I'd love to stay connected. Make sure you're on my email list where I share weekly encouragement, mindset shifts, nervous system insights, and the conversations we're having here on the podcast. It's where I go deeper and support you beyond these episodes. And I share some fun secrets here and there too. And if you're ready for more than just listening, if you're ready to actively rewrite the stories, patterns, and beliefs that have kept you playing small, I'd love to welcome you into the Rewrite Collective.
