There’s no shortage of advice online about how to grow a wellness clinic.

From marketing hacks to promises of million-dollar practices working three days a week, the noise can be overwhelming — especially for providers who were never taught business in medical school.

In this episode of Beyond Hormones: The Business of Wellness, Jody Layne introduces the POWER Framework, the system developed after helping grow a hormone clinic in Orlando to over $4 million in revenue and later implementing the same approach in clinics across the country.

The POWER framework breaks clinic growth into five essential pillars:

• Positioning – how you position yourself as a business
• Operations – the systems that keep your clinic running smoothly
• Workforce – building a team that supports growth
• Experience – designing a patient journey that creates loyalty
• Revenue – the marketing and sales systems that drive predictable growth

But the real insight isn’t just the five pillars — it’s the order.

In this episode, you’ll learn why most clinics start in the wrong place, how the POWER framework was developed, and why building your clinic from the inside out can dramatically reduce stress while increasing growth.

This episode kicks off a six-part series where each pillar will be explored in depth.

If you run a hormone clinic, functional medicine practice, longevity clinic, or any cash-pay wellness practice, this series will give you a clear roadmap for building a thriving business while staying focused on what matters most: helping patients live healthier lives.

Welcome to Beyond Hormones, the Business of Wellness, the podcast for hormone and functional medicine providers who want a thriving, predictably profitable practice, and maybe a little less stress along the way. Hi, I'm your host, Jody Lane, and I've worked with lots of clinics in marketing, sales, and business development, and I have seen what works and what doesn't. And here's what I believe. Hormone and wellness care should be available to everyone who wants it. And while providers know the medicine, many struggle with the business side of their cash practice. And that's where I come in. See, this podcast is here to share real strategies, real stories, things you can implement in your practice right away. So I am so glad you're here. Come on, let's go. Hello everyone, and welcome back to the Beyond Hormones, the Business of Wellness podcast. I'm your host, Jody Lane, and today we're kicking off something a little different. It's a six-part podcast series where I'm going to walk you through the framework that I've used for almost a decade to help hormone and wellness clinics grow in a way that is predictable, sustainable, and honestly, a whole lot less stressful. We call this framework power. And you may have heard me talk about it before at other podcasts or on the website. Now, before we get into it, let me tell you what we're going to cover in this series because if you are someone who is running a wellness clinic, whether you own it or you're a manager or whatever, every single one of these episodes is going to matter to you. Over the next several weeks, we're going to talk about everything to do with power. Today's episode is going to be an overview, what the power framework really is and why most clinics grow the hard way. Then we'll dive into P, positioning, why some clinics are chosen and others get compared on price. Then we'll go into O, operations, the systems that keep a clinic from becoming daily chaos. Then W, why your staff is actually the most important product you have in your business. We'll go over to then E, experience, how the patient journey determines whether you have retention and referrals, and we'll finish up with R, revenue, how marketing, sales, and retention actually work together to create predictable growth. Each episode will go deeper into one pillar so that by the end of the series, you will understand how the entire system works together. And you're also going to walk away with actionable things you can do to make small improvements once you fully get the power of power. And I want to be very clear about something right before we start this series is not about selling you a darn thing. I promise. My goal with these next six episodes is to teach you what I've learned from working inside a hormone clinic and consulting with tons more. Now, if you take what you learn here and implement it in your own way, you are going to start to see incredible changes. And what used to be hard will suddenly become a little bit easier. And if you're brand new to this, you're just starting out, you're going to avoid the frustration and the pain that comes with trial and error. You see, I already made all those mistakes. I tried stuff, improved stuff. Now you get to benefit from my experience. So please use it because the more successful wellness clinics we have in this country, the more patients get access to care that can truly change their lives. Now, let me start with something that I think a lot of providers are feeling right now. Or at least I'm starting to feel this. There is so much noise on the internet and social media about how to grow a wellness clinic. Everywhere you look, someone is telling you how to make a million dollars by just working three days a week, or what marketing strategy will you can just plug and play into your clinic and it will work overnight? How to turn your knowledge into an online course and you can retire rarely rich. And honestly, for most providers, this kind of messaging is really doing more harm than good. Because the reality is that most of you were never taught how to run a business. Medical school teaches you the medicine, right? It does not teach you how to price your services or how to hire and lead a team or how to build systems or how to market a practice or even how to manage your. So providers are trying to piece together advice from Instagram, TikTok influencers, consultants, marketing agencies, podcasts, conferences, and even ChatGPT, and it's overwhelming. And you know, you may not know what is real and what is hype unless the people you're listening to have stories that prove what they're teaching you actually worked. So please be cautious of anything that you hear that sounds too good to be true. Look, when I started working with a hormone clinic back in Orlando in 2017, I had no medical background at all. My background was in business. I had owned a couple of marketing agencies. I had worked with big companies like Walt Disney World and Toyota. I'd even built software products, but I had never worked in a medical clinic. And honestly, I think that turned out to be a huge advantage because I didn't walk into that clinic with preconceived ideas about how you run a medical clinic. I had no idea how traditional medical clinics were supposed to go. And so I just approached my experience like I would any other business. So the first thing we did was something that most clinics never even do. We got clear on our numbers. We looked at every expense. We built tracking sheets. Every single month, we sat down and reviewed the numbers and we asked ourselves a simple question. Are we moving in the right direction? Then we set goals, not vague goals like I want to grow the clinic, I want to be bigger next year than we were this year. No, actual numbers, 10-year goals, three-year goals, one-year goals. Then we worked backwards to calculate exactly how many patients we needed each month to hit those revenue goals. And once that became clear, we moved on to the next thing. Now, over the next seven years, we worked through the clinic piece by piece. First, it was the financial strategy. Then we moved on to operations. Then we focused on creating a great team and culture. Then we looked at how the patients were experiencing their interactions with us. And only after all those things were strong did we really start investing and scaling our marketing. Seven years later, the clinic had grown to over$4 million in revenue with more than 20 employees and four providers. And when I look back, something became super duper clear. The growth wasn't random. We had built the clinic in a very specific sequence. And that sequence eventually became the power framework. So what does power mean? Power stands for five pillars that support a successful clinic: P for positioning, O for operations, W for workforce, E for patient experience, R for revenue. Now here's the key insight. It's not just the five pillars, it's the order you do the work. You see, most clinics open their doors and they start with revenue. It makes sense. They need patients, so they just start with marketing. They run ads, they try to get leads. But when the other pillars aren't strong, the marketing, if it works, actually magnifies the problem inside the clinics because leads fall through the cracks, staff get overwhelmed, patients have inconsistent experiences, and revenue becomes very unpredictable. The Power Framework builds a clinic from the inside out. Now, one of my favorite examples of this is a clinic that I worked with in Virginia. They came to me before they ever even opened their doors. They had a very clear vision for what they wanted their clinic to look like in three years into the future. And instead of jumping straight into marketing, which, trust me, they wanted to do, we built the foundation first. We created pricing that was profitable. We mapped out revenue goals. We set up systems for patient communication and follow-up so nothing fell through the cracks. We documented processes before they even started to hire more staff. So when they finally launched their marketing, something truly amazing happened. Patients came in, the marketing worked, and the clinic was already prepared to take care of them. So you know what? Retention was incredible. Patients were happy, above and beyond just getting great results from the treatment. Growth actually happened faster than expected. At the time, the owner doctor was working in the ER and he was hoping to leave within two years. He did it in less than 18 months. I am so proud and happy for them. They stood there, they did the work, and it all paid off. Now, when I started consulting with clinics around 2020, the hormone clinic industry looked very different. It was relatively small. Today it has exploded. Now we have telehealth hormone clinics and longevity clinics and functional medicine practices and pellet-only clinics and men's health clinics and menopause-specific clinics. And while the models may look different, the fundamentals are exactly the same. Every clinic still needs a clear positioning, strong operations, a capable team, and a bulletproof culture, a thoughtful patient experience, and a reliable marketing and sales system. The Power Framework works whether you want a clinic that generates$30,000 a month or$300,000 a month. It's about growing intentionally. Now, before we wrap up today's episode, I want to share something with you. This is a little secret that I often share with providers who feel a little intimidated by the business side of running a clinic. So if running the business makes you nervous, it's usually because you're making the business about you. How you're going to grow, how you're going to treat, how you're going to lead. But let me ask you something. Did you actually start your clinic for you? I don't think so. You started your clinic for your patients. See, most providers start their clinic because they saw something in traditional medicine that wasn't working and they believe in the wellness practice. They want people to feel better. They want people to live healthier lives. So when you shift your thinking from I don't know how to run this business, to I am building the practice that my patients need to receive great care, that is when things start to get really into focus and your perspective on what to do shifts. It's no longer about selling, it's about serving. It's about creating a clinic that allows you to help more people. And when you make decisions that are focused on your patients, if you started this clinic in the first place, your choices just become easier. Now, in the next episode of this series, we're going to dive into the first pillar of power, which is positioning. We're going to talk all about why positioning is the foundation of every successful clinic and how it determines who you're going to attract, how patients are going to perceive your value, and how easy it is for you to really grow your business. We'll also break down three specific things that make up strong positioning. That's core values, your value stack, and your pricing. Because if positioning is unclear, guys, even the best marketing is going to struggle. So make sure you subscribe to the podcast if you don't already, so that you don't miss the rest of this power series.
