Most hormone and wellness clinic owners are working incredibly hard — but many are unknowingly losing tens of thousands of dollars every time a team member walks out the door.
In this episode of Beyond Hormones: The Business of Wellness, Jody Layne breaks down how Core Values — when done right — become one of your most powerful profit tools. She shares a real story from her own Orlando clinic that shows exactly how a strong culture protects everything you've built.
You'll learn:
- Why generic values like "integrity" don't work — and what to do instead
- How turnover is silently costing your clinic $75K–$100K per employee lost
- The 3D Hiring Formula that helps you bring in culture-aligned team members
- Why a strong culture doesn't just keep the right people in — it filters the wrong people out

Welcome to Beyond Hormones, the Business of Wellness, the podcast for hormone and functional medicine providers who want a thriving, predictably profitable practice and maybe a little less stress along the way. Hi, I'm your host, Jody Lane, and I've worked with lots of clinics in marketing, sales, and business development, and I have seen what works and what doesn't. And here's what I believe hormone and wellness care should be available to everyone who wants it. And while providers know the medicine, many struggle with the business side of their cash practice. And that's where I come in. See, this podcast is here to share real strategies, real stories, things you can implement in your practice right away. So I am so glad you're here. Come on, let's go. Before we jump into today's Fiverr, I want to give you a quick heads up about the series that these Thursday episodes are a part of right now. For the next few months, our Thursday episodes are the Accelerator Clinic series. Short, practical strategies pulled directly from the courses inside the Accelerator, which is our training platform built specifically for hormone and wellness clinic owners. Everything inside the accelerator is built around our power framework. Power stands for positioning, operations, workforce, patient experience, and revenue. They are the five pillars that determine whether a clinic struggles or becomes predictably profitable. All right, let's get into today's episode. Welcome back to the Beyond Hormones, the Business of Wellness podcast. I am your host, Jody Lane, and this is your Thursday Fiverr, which is a short, punchy teaching episode designed to give one powerful idea that you can actually use in your clinic this week. Today we're talking about core values. And before you roll your eyes and think, oh great, fluffy words on a wall, which I get it, I need you to stay with me because when we talk about core values and how you how they are done right, they don't just make your clinic feel good. They can literally double your net profit. Now I know that sounds bold, but I'm going to show you and I'm going to prove it to you in the next few minutes. So let's start with what core values actually are, because most clinics get this wrong. Most businesses get this wrong. Core values are not inspirational words like integrity or teamwork, those are concepts. Core values are actionable, observable behaviors, things you and your team can actually see and hold each other accountable. Let me explain the difference. Instead of saying something like, we value integrity, your core values might be we do what we say we will do, and if we can't, we communicate and make a new promise. Now, do you see how that's something you can actually measure? That's a core value. Now, here's why this matters financially, and I want you to really pay attention. The Gallup research shows that replacing one employee costs one to one and a half to two times their salary. So if you lose a$50,000 team member, you're really looking at$75,000 to$100,000 in lost time, lost productivity, and retraining costs, not to mention the disruption on your team. That is real money we're talking about, walking out the door. And core values, when lived out daily, are one of the most powerful tools you have for keeping great people. So how do you create them? There are three quick prompts that I love to use. Number one, what behaviors make you genuinely proud of your best staff members? Number two, what behaviors would cause you to fire someone even if they were technically skilled? And number three, what do you want your patients, your vendors, and your team to say about your business when you're not in the room? Take those answers and turn them into short, actionable statements. That's your culture blueprint. Now I want to tell you a story because this concept really came to life for me in my own clinic here in Orlando. We'd had our core values in place, but then I hired a patient liaison and I was really excited about her. She had spent years in pharmaceutical sales. She was driven, she was personable, she was laser focused on leads, and on paper, she was my dream hire. I just knew she was going to do incredible things for us. And she quit within the first 90 days. Now, here's the thing: it was honestly one of the best employee experiences I personally have ever had because our clinic culture was deeply intentional. We met every Thursday for staff meetings where we celebrated wins, we talked through it wasn't working, and we genuinely checked in on each other as human beings. We were in each other's lives. That was us, that was our culture, and we lived it out every single day. But for her, it was overwhelming. She had spent her career in pharmaceutical sales. She was autonomous. She lived in her car. She was accountable only to her numbers. Nobody checked in on her unless she was underperforming. And suddenly she was in an environment where we wanted her to be present. We were tracking metrics together. We were sharing wins and losses as a team. And for her, it was a lot. So one night she called me and she said, you know, I thought about it, Jody, and I know this isn't a long-term fit for me. And so she resigned gracefully, kindly. There was no drama. And I remember thinking to myself, you know, our culture did exactly what it was supposed to do today. Because here's what could have happened instead. She could have stayed. She could have tried to white knuckle it for six months because she really loved the hormone space. And after a year or so, she would have been quietly unhappy, creating friction, underperforming, and we would eventually have had to have a much harder conversation. Instead, our culture was so clearly lived every single day that she could see for herself before we even had a chance to, that this wasn't the place for her. And she left us better than she found us. Now, this is the power of a culture built on real, lived core values. It doesn't just keep the right people in, it gracefully filters the wrong people out. All right, let's go ahead and land this plane because core values are not a nice to have, they are a profit strategy. They attract the right people, they keep your best people, they give you a framework to lead without drama. And when your culture is strong, it does some of the hardest work for you. Now, as I mentioned earlier, this episode is pulled from a full course inside the Accelerator called From Values to Victory: Creating a Clinic Culture That Doubles Your Profit. And inside that course, you will get a core values worksheet, a value-based interview question bank, and a personal improvement plan template that you can use right away. Now you can go ahead and create a free account at accelerator.acceleratedmedical practices.com. And when you get inside, there are free courses waiting for you the moment you sign up. And if you want to go deeper, the PowerPass gives you access to everything inside for just$99 a month. One last thing. If you know another hormone and wellness provider who is working hard but still feels like the business side is just not clicking, could you do me a favor? Could you share this episode with them? Our industry is a community and we genuinely grow stronger when we learn from each other. I want to thank you so much for being here. I hope you got a ton of golden nuggets today, things you can take back to your practice and use in this week. And I will see you next Thursday for the next Fiverr. Thanks so much. Thank you for listening to Beyond Hormones, the business of wellness. I hope that you're walking away with fresh ideas and real strategies you can use to grow your practice with profit and purpose.
