In this episode of Vitality Unfiltered, David J. Bauder, PA-C, and Stephanie Lattimore, NP, discuss Sermorelin, one of the most studied growth hormone secretagogues in modern medicine.
The conversation begins with a review of how Sermorelin works by stimulating the pituitary gland to support the body's natural growth hormone production rather than replacing growth hormone directly. The episode also reviews the peptide's FDA history, original pediatric indications, and the extensive body of research that has accumulated over the past several decades.
David and Stephanie further explore the role of Sermorelin in body composition, lean muscle development, recovery, sleep quality, wellness medicine, and healthy aging. They also address the growing popularity of peptide therapies online and discuss one of the most important issues facing patients today: sourcing and quality control.
The discussion highlights the importance of obtaining peptides from reputable FDA-regulated 503A and 503B compounding pharmacies and explains why manufacturing standards, sterility, purity, and transparency matter when considering peptide therapy.
This episode is part of the Vitality Unfiltered peptide education series, designed to provide factual, evidence-based discussions that help patients cut through the noise and better understand the science behind modern peptide therapies.

What if you could stimulate your body's own natural growth hormone production instead of injecting growth hormone? Today we're discussing SMORlin, one of the most studied growth hormone secretagogs available and why it continues to play a role in longevity, recovery, body composition, and wellness medicine decades after its introduction. To help me do that today is nurse practitioner Stephanie Lattimore from the Washington, D.C. Weight Loss and Vitality Clinic. Thank you for joining us today, Stephanie.
SPEAKER_01Thank you for having me, David. I'm excited to talk a little bit more about Samorin today.
SPEAKER_00Let's start off with that. Let's start off with just the overview of what SMOLin is and how does it work?
SPEAKER_01Sure. So SMORlin is a peptide that acts as a growth hormone-releasing hormone analog and a human growth hormone secretagog. So what does that mean? The SMORLin peptide stimulates the pituitary gland to produce, secrete, and release its own natural human growth hormone. So instead of supplementing with exogenous human growth hormone, which carries, you know, a side effect profile and risks, SMORIN supports the body's natural production of this hormone by complementing a physiologic pathway naturally.
SPEAKER_00You know, so when we when we decided to record this, uh partly we we w we wanted to call this the black scrub edition on peptide therapy. And I I think the plan is to try to, I think there's something like 118 current peptides out there. And I think the plan is to try to do one of these factual type recordings on a peptide every single week, because there's a ton of noise out there right now on the internet. Online, uh, there's a lot of loose, I would call it loose promotional activities going on when it comes to peptides. So I'd like to keep this just very straightforward and very factual, and we think about what is, you know, when we think about what is SMORLin and what does it do and how where does it come from? So when we think about animal studies, animal studies, clinical studies, human studies, what are the facts that our listeners need to know when it comes to those three things?
SPEAKER_01Aaron Powell So looking at the studies and the data behind SMORIN, there are human studies, there are clinical trials, and there are an extensive amount of animal studies out there proving this medication's safety and effectiveness, truly efficacy.
SPEAKER_00This is one of the this peptide, SMORIN over the years, I think originally I think uh FDA approved something like 1995 or 1997, something like that. This peptide is one of the more studied peptides over the years. What is it when it was what is the primary, when it was studied and brought into circulation, what was it primarily used for? And then what is it primarily used for today?
SPEAKER_01Good question. So originally identified in the 1980s, Sumoralin was approved by the FDA in 1997 under the brand name JERF to evaluate for pituitary function and underlying pituitary conditions in the pediatric population. It's important to note that although this peptide received FDA approval, the manufacturer actually voluntarily revoked this and pulled the drug from the market in 2008 simply because of market competition and alternatives that had become available, not having anything to do with its safety or effectiveness.
SPEAKER_00And currently it is available. But currently, what is the preferred indication of Samoorlin now?
SPEAKER_01So the off-label indication, which is proven in the clinical trials, is the development of lean muscle mass, body composition. It's an adjunct in a weight loss. It can help with recovery and energy in the wellness space as well as sleep quality. So although it was not, although it is no longer marketed for its intended FDA indication, it has a plethora of alternative uses that can still be beneficial when injecting the peptide.
SPEAKER_00And again, these are just second and third order effect benefits of this because originally it was designed for the diagnostic aspect. And the diagnostic aspect was looking at the elevation of growth hormone and IgF-1 levels, and those are known to cause the second third order effect benefits of kind of what integrative functional medicine is looking for today. Are this, when we think about resourcing or availability, where where are these things sourced from right now? Are and what's the availability in compounded pharmacies, online for you know, online pharmacies and resources? What's the situation right now?
SPEAKER_01So the Sumorlin peptide is available, readily available at 503A and 503B compounding pharmacies that are FDA regulated. So it is available through those channels. And as far as source control, I would recommend receiving this medication from a certified 503A or 503B pharmacy if you are thinking about starting this peptide therapy. Not with the Samoorlin peptide itself. Very good question. And it is important to read between the lines when it comes to the safety of these online, you know, pharmaceuticals, these peptides. Um, there's a great deal of safety and data out there that SMORIN can be used safely and effectively in the right patient population. The safety concerns that I saw arose from the nature of the compounding of the medication, where it's coming from, how it's made, who's prescribing it. The safety surrounding peptides is such an interesting climate right now. As you said, there's a lot of noise out there. You have to make sure you are getting these peptides from reputable compounding pharmacies who are producing the medication in a sterile environment.
SPEAKER_00You know, that brings me to the kind of like just triggered a thought on on from myself here. Recently, one of my one of our project managers that was working with us to build one of our clinics, he uh he was doing another project over on the east side of Washington, D.C. And all himself and all the workers, the construction workers, they went out to go get lunch and their lunch over there with those, they went to go to the food trucks. And when they got to the food trucks, they noticed that they're selling injectable peptides on the food trucks. And I was floored when I heard this. I'm just like, this is a the wild, wild west at this point that you know, that these peptides are being sold on gut trucks, food trucks in on the east side of Washington, D.C. I have no idea if I'm getting anybody in trouble right now or not, but I'm just say it here to say that I I'm gonna go out on a limb and I'm just gonna say that I don't believe that peptides should be sold on food trucks in downtown Eastside, D.C. I mean, what's your thoughts on that?
SPEAKER_01I completely agree. I'm gonna have to do, I'm in DC right now. I'm gonna have to do a little, uh little trip on my way home to see what's going on down there at the food trucks, but I'm shocked, but I'm not surprised because there is little regulation online of how these medications are being produced and sold. And like once again, it's not the peptide that's dangerous, it's the production of the peptide that can be brought into question. Absolutely. And that's important to know that distinction because ultimately it is safe and it can benefit many people in many different aspects of their life, but it has to be obtained in the right way.
SPEAKER_00Aaron Powell Yeah, this whole online thing is really taken one, just it's really taken on a you know its own dimension as far as like how it's been blown up. I mean, we've we've been prescribing, we opened up weight loss and vitality over 12 years ago, and we we've been u utilizing peptides in our clinic for over a decade. It's not necessarily new to us, but it really over the last year, it really has gained momentum online. And it's you know, not all of the information is good. There's good stuff out there, there's no doubt about it. There's a lot of there's a lot of knowledgeable individuals out there that that but it a lot of it is just kind of repeated, uh regurgitated, AI-generated information with not a lot of context and a lot of, you know, not many people are answering the harder questions on all of these different peptides as far as what clinical studies have been involved and the facts that are involved with it. So we just want our patients to be super safe when they're getting and accessing this. And uh, what's your final verdict on some more and stuff?
SPEAKER_01Safe and effective when used properly and prescribed from a safe 503A, 503B compounding pharmacy.
SPEAKER_00I concur. Great show. All right. Thank you for joining us today. If you like to learn more on this, visit our blog. I'm gonna include the link in the description below this video. And just remember it's important that not all peptides are created equal. If you consider using any peptides, make sure it comes from a reputable, trustworthy source. Quality, purity, and manufacturing standards absolutely matter. And you need to know you absolutely need to know where this stuff is coming from. Okay? Want to should thank you for being here today, and we'll see you on the next episode. It's just the surface.
