There is a reason warm feet can help you fall asleep faster,
In this episode, I break down the actual physiology behind sleep, how thermoregulation works, and why something as simple as socks might be a powerful lever — if you use it correctly.

Welcome back to Night Shift with Justin S. King, How to Transform Your Life One Night at a Time. This afternoon I saw a post on why you should always wear socks to bed at night. So I'm going to do a short episode on this. The person who had made the video studies Chinese medicine, and in her viewpoint, there's a lot of importance in your feet as far as your internal energies go, your spiritual energies and your health, and what she called a metabolic fire. The core point is that your body falls asleep by dropping its core temperature. And the way it does that is by pushing heat out through your hands and your feet. So if your feet are warm, heat can leave the body more easily and you fall asleep faster. If your feet are cold, your body holds on to heat and sleep gets delayed. That's it. It's thermoregulation. So yes, wearing socks to bed can help. One important thing is that the socks should not be too tight or you're working against yourself. If you are waking up and there's a dent on your skin from where the sock is, your socks are restricting blood flow and that's not helping. So choose a loose, breathable sock. You can get socks specifically for sleep. And if you run hot at night, you may or may not want to use socks. So there's the test for this week. If your feet are cold, try socks for a week. The poster also recommended a heating pad by your feet or taking a foot bath, a warm foot bath every night before bed.
