In this episode, I break down:
- Why baking soda doesn’t do what people claim (and why it can cause problems)
- What Epsom salt actually does—and what it doesn’t
- The truth about magnesium absorption through the skin
- How to choose clean, simple bath salts without falling for marketing
- The real mechanism behind why a night bath helps you fall asleep faster
And most importantly, I give you a clean, repeatable protocol you can use tonight.
Welcome back to Night Shift with Justin S. King, How to Transform Your Life One Night at a Time. Tonight we are going to be talking about baths, bedtime baths, and what you add to them. About a year ago, someone suggested a bath add-in of the three following ingredients: Epsin salt, magnesium flakes, and baking soda. There's no specific recipe. If you are going to use this, do not pre-mix them. But I will go down through these ingredients and give my recommendation. First off, more ingredients to your bath does not necessarily make it better. So let's talk about baking soda. You can hear that adding baking soda to your bath may detox your body or enhance the magnesium absorption. There's no actual proof that it does that. Your body detoxes through your liver and kidneys, not your bath water. There's no solid evidence that baking soda improves magnesium absorption or sleep quality. What it can do is raise the pH of the water, which might soften your skin slightly. But it also leaves residue in your pipes over time, especially when you mix that with soap, oils, and salt and magnesium flakes. Those three things together can create a hard substance that will clog up your drains. Ask me how I know. So baking soda is basically adding something that you don't need to add. If you do add it, add a very small amount. Next up is Epsom salt. Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, and people assume the benefits come from absorbing magnesium through the skin. Once again, that evidence is weak. Your skin barrier is not a sponge. So there's small amounts absorbed. It's not enough to meaningfully change your magnesium levels. But what is actually happening is that the Epsom salt bath feels effective because the environment it creates. Warm water increases blood flow, increases muscle tension, and it sets up a drop in your core body temperature after you get out. The drop is the strongest biological signal for sleep onset, not magnesium absorption. Next up we have magnesium flakes. Those are magnesium chloride, usually sourced from seabeds. They're more soluble and in theory may absorb slightly better, but in practice, that difference isn't what's driving better sleep. What you will notice is your skin's response. Some magnesium flakes can cause tingling, itching, or mild burning sensation, especially if your skin is sensitive. So if you use them, also keep them at a low dose, or you can skip them entirely. So for Epsom salt, look for unscented single ingredient magnesium sulfate. No fragrances, no dyes, no sleep blends, no added essential oils. Magnesium flakes, look for clean sourcing and no additives. You're buying performance, you're not buying scented extras. So here's the protocol for a perfect bath. No baking soda. And get in for 15 to 20 minutes. No phone, no stimulation. You can turn the lights out and practice slow breathing. Inhale for four seconds, exhale for six. Let your system calm down, then get out before you overheat. Overheating will keep you up. If you do want to add fragrances such as essential oils, add them yourself with a trusted essential oil source. That's it for tonight's episode of Night Shift and recommendations for a bedtime bath.
