Sometimes the best sleep upgrade is not an app. It is a boundary.

Welcome back to Night Shift with Justin S. King, how to transform your life one night at a time. Tonight we're going to be talking about a simple habit I've mentioned before. I saw a reel today about cell phones next to the bed. This guy, and he's he in all his videos, he says, What's that? Researchers found out that blah blah blah. And in his reel he mentioned that this study showed that the cell phone sends signals to your brain and your brain sends signals back to the phone while you're asleep. I can't actually find the research he was mentioning. Some of the other ones, videos he's done in the past, I have found the support that he mentions, but for this specific one I didn't find anything, but it was pretty concerning by the response in the comments of people. So did some research and let's get into it. The first thing for the night shift is that you want to let your phone sleep in the other room. Talked before about a six to eight foot electronics bubble around your bed where you're not having electronics close to you while you're sleeping, and whether that is because it's sending some kind of signals to you or not. The Mecca Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends turning off all electronics 30 to 60 minutes before bed and leaving your phone in the other room at night because the real issue is the habit to grab the phone in the middle of the night if you wake up, to check your the time or to scroll late at night. That light stimulation first thing in the morning, all that is going to stimulate your brain if you wake up in the middle of the night. And as we discussed in the past, we don't want your phone light to be the first light that enters your eyes when you wake up. So research on phones near the bed found that sleep is worse, includes longer time to fall asleep. You wake up more times in the middle of the night, your mind is occupied about your with your phone. So the first thing is of course you want to put your phone in airplane mode if it's in your room, and specifically if it's not, you can leave it in airplane mode as well. That's gonna turn off the accelerator and the Wi-Fi. You can keep your Bluetooth on or off as well, but the best move is to keep that phone in the other room. If you are using your phone late at night, be sure to switch it to the red filter I've discussed in the previous episode. But the best choice is to stop using all electronics an hour before bed.
