Tonight’s episode breaks down a practical 3-part affirmation formula: commitment, compelling reason, and specific action. The structure is simple: “I am committed to [specific result or behavior] no matter what. This is a must for me because [compelling reason]. Therefore, I will [specific action] at [specific time/frequency], whether I feel like it or not.” This is where affirmation stops being wishful thinking and becomes a behavioral contract — a clear decision about what you will do, why it matters, and when you will prove it.

Welcome back to Night Shift with Justin S. King, How to Transform Your Life One Night at a Time. Tonight I'm going to be sharing a little bit about affirmations and how how Elrod says you can make them more effective rather than just making I am statements. He has a three-step formula that he says is the most effective affirmation formula you can use. Step one is you affirm what you are committed to. So you're not going to say, I am rich, I am disciplined, but you are going to say, I am committed to blank, no matter what, there's no other option. And in the blank, what you're going to do is put in an outcome or an activity. Hal frames this as a commitment to an outcome or behavior, not a fantasy identity. For example, you could say, I am committed to losing 10 pounds in three months, or I'm committed to exercising 10 minutes a day. No matter what, there's no other option. Step two is you affirm why it is a must. This gives you emotional fuel and motivation. This is a must for me because the reason I'm committed to this is because you want to name out three to five reasons, either to yourself, your spouse, your kids. If you want to take this deeper, take all, take your physical, spiritual, financial, and relationship and tie at least one each of those to your why. That is a idea that comes from wake up where. And the third step in his affirmations is you affirm which actions you will take and when. It does give some ideas. If you don't know what the next step is, the action would be you schedule time to figure out what the next step is. So for example, you can say I'm committed to being in bed by 10:30 p.m. no matter what. There is no other option. This is a must for me because my energy, focus, income, and emotional stability are built the night before. Therefore, by 9.45 p.m., I will plug my phone in outside the bedroom, brush my teeth, write tomorrow's top priority, and start winding down. So the idea is you state a truth. And this is why he says that most affirmations fail, is because you're saying something that you don't believe. Then you state a commitment and a reason plus the scheduled action. He encourages you to write this out, handwriting, and also on your possibly your notes app on your phone, because it can be changed. This is not something that is set in stone, but it's something you may change from time to time. And though this is his favorite form of affirmations, he does mention that other affirmations may be helpful. For example, he has one to the effect of I am committed to my mission of living every day as the best version of myself because I know that I am just as worthy, deserving, and capable of creating miracles and achieving everything I want as any other person on this earth. So for tonight's night shift, pick one area in your life that you want to improve or one outcome you are looking to achieve and write out the formula. Then tomorrow morning or tonight when you go to bed, pick it out loud, read it out loud. You can jump over to the show notes to see the exact formula. And that is it for tonight's night shift. My name is Justin S. King, and I help entrepreneurs find peace tonight, tomorrow, and for the rest of their lives through sleep optimization, emotion regulation, and discovering their purpose. Good night.
