The easiest way to build a new habit may be to attach it to one you already do without thinking. Tonight, Justin shares a simple habit-stacking strategy that has helped him stay consistent for months—and how you can use the same principle to make a new behavior nearly automatic.

Welcome back to Night Shift with Justin S. King. How to transform your life one night at a time. Tonight I want to share with you a little story that happened not too long ago. Not too long ago, I was doing the Conqueror app, Lord of the Ring Challenges, where you virtually walk through from the Shire to Mount Doom. Along the way, you get little postcards and it tells you about the story adjacent to the movies. And I believe it's supposed to take me about 11 months, but I I finished it quite a bit sooner than that. I think there was about five legs, and you get little medals at the each uh end of each leg. The first leg has the one ring, and you carry that ring through each of the medals until the last medal is the volcano, and you put the ring in the volcano. It's a very fun, creative challenge. They now have very many different options, including Star Wars, Harry Potters, and they started out with real world hikes and treks and virtual, I mean, where it was more real world. But as part of the Lord of the Rings experience, I chose to put stones inside of my backpack. A lot of people at the time were doing rucksacking, I believe it's called, where you have a met a weighted vest. And I decided that I would carry weights inside my backpack and along with the movie, take certain weights out along the journey, symbolizing letting go of certain aspects of my life and my personality, my past. And by the time I reached the end, the backpack would be light. And I was also listening to the books while I was doing this. Anyway, the moral of the story is you don't have to carry the weight. A lot of times we are putting the weight and the burdens on ourselves to make things harder, make it more difficult. And that was my original intention that these weights would make the walking more difficult and be a symbolic reminder of things I wanted to let go of. Similar to the weight of the ring in the book and movie series. But like I said, you don't need to carry the weight. And that weight might be just the thought that life has to be hard. It might be a belief in order to be successful, life has to be hard. It has to be difficult. But what if you put down that belief and picked up something else? What do you want to replace that with? Think about that tonight and meditate on what's one belief that you have that may not be serving you anymore on your journey in this life. And pick something to replace it with. That's it for tonight's episode of Night Shift. My name is Justin S. King, and I help entrepreneurs find peace tonight, tomorrow, and for the rest of their lives through sleep optimization, emotion regulation, and discovering their purpose.
