Why You’ve Stopped Laughing: The "Serious" Trap & How Joy Heals Your Nervous System (Women Healers 50+)
Are you a woman healer over 50 who cares so deeply for others that you have forgotten what joy actually feels like in your own body? Have you bought into the narrative that you must stay "serious" to be competent, even while you are snapping at small things and running on fumes?
You are denying your body one of its most powerful recovery tools. For women over 50 and healers, laughter isn't frivolous—it is a biological necessity for longevity. If you are feeling the heavy creep of compassion fatigue and exhaustion, your nervous system is screaming for a release valve. You aren't "unprofessional" for wanting to laugh; you are human. And right now, your "seriousness" is keeping your cortisol high and your energy low.
In this permission-granting episode, Dr. Juls prescribes the one thing you likely haven't given yourself in a long time: Laughter as medicine. You will learn why reclaiming your mindset of play is actually an ethical imperative for sustainable care. Discover:
- The Science of Snort-Laugh Resilience: How genuine laughter regulates your vagus nerve and acts as a literal "circuit breaker" for burnout and anxiety.
- The Guilt Trap: Why many helpers feel guilty about feeling good when patients are suffering (and how to stop this form of self neglect).
- The "Emotional Support Gremlin" System: A hilarious and effective strategy to appoint a "laugh dealer" in your life, creating a buffer against isolation and feeling overwhelmed.
Stop taking yourself so seriously. Press play to heal your nervous system with authenticity and get your giggle back.
This podcast supports women healers over 50 navigating burnout, compassion fatigue, and midlife transitions with strategies for nervous system regulation, trauma-informed boundaries, and chakra alignment to heal resentment and self-neglect while cultivating soul joy, radiance, and a purposeful next chapter of freedom and inner peace.
THE DIAGNOSIS: Are you the Martyr who can't say no? Or the Warrior who fights until she collapses? You cannot heal what you cannot name.

Welcome to Soul Joy Happy Hour. No drinks required. This episode is all about the science of the snort lab. Okay, enough of that. That is cracking me up. All right. So, welcome, welcome, welcome. We're gonna try to add a little something for y'all. And um this is what I've come up with. Every Friday we're gonna have a happy hour, no drinks required, and we're gonna talk about something that's supposed to make you laugh. Okay, so joy dealers, as I'm gonna call you on Fridays, welcome to Happy Hour Fridays, the only burnout prevention segment where nasal turbulence is considered a clinical intervention. I'm Dr. Julie Merriman, therapist, professor, and a woman who once snort laugh so loud in a Starbucks, they offered me water and emotional support. Okay, let's talk about the sexy part, science. Now, let's get just a hot minute nerdy. A study from Loma Linda University found that genuine laughter drops cortisol levels by up to 39%. That's pretty good. Cortisol, you know, that's the hormone responsible for your I love my job, but I also want to affect my own death energy at times, which might be a little extreme. But that cortisol is not a fun hormone to have to metabolize. Another study found daily laughter boosts immunity, lowers inflammation, and increases pain tolerance. So, what's the translation? A snort laugh, I know I do that sometimes, and my husband looks at me cross-eyed. A snort laugh is cheaper than therapy, although I highly recommend therapy. It's more effective than kale, and it does not require prior authorization from Blue Cross. Why do helpers apologize for joy? Have y'all noticed that? Is it a reflex reflexive action? I don't know. You know, you go, uh-huh, and there's a little snort there, and you go, oh no, no, apologies. That that wasn't embarrassing. That was neurobiological resilience deployed at volume. So from now on, if and when you accidentally snort in public, just smile and say, that was my vegan nerve clocking in for work. If I had an audience here, we we clap at that. You just clogging in for work. Okay, so here's your homework. This is gonna be short and simple. Today's assignment: I don't want you to get self-care care, buddy. I don't want you to get an accountability partner. You need a certified emotional support gremlin. And their job is to send you one unhinged meme or TikTok per week. Bonus points if it arrives during a staff meeting. So take your phone out right now and text them. Congratulations, you have been promoted to my official laugh dealer. Send nonsense immediately. Okay. So snort with me, right? This could be so silly, and we're gonna do it because we work way too hard and take things way too serious. So, big deep breath in, and now exhale with your juiciest fake snort. So I'm gonna lead. Just I don't even know if I really can. Oh, pretend that was a fake snort. If someone heard you just now, simply whisper self-care and walk away. So, okay, y'all. This was our first Happy Hour Friday. Protect your joy, protect your nervous system, and remember, you haven't if you haven't started today, your brain is still in danger. See you Tuesday, joy dealers.
