You look completely fine. You are not fine.

That's not weakness. That's the most dangerous form of burnout there is — the kind that hides behind your credentials, your competence, and your ability to hold it together for everyone else while you quietly fall apart.

If you're a woman healer over 50 navigating compassion fatigue and burnout, this episode will explain why your professional training is the exact mechanism hiding your collapse — and give you a body-based practice designed specifically for high-functioning healers whose symptoms hide in plain sight.

Here's what you'll walk away with:

✦ The Professional Competence Trap — The neuroscience of why clinicians with the highest skill levels are the least likely to self-identify as burned out, even when their allostatic load says otherwise. This is documented. This is real. And it is not your fault.

✦ The Vagus-Visuddha Connection — Cutting-edge science meets chakra psychology in a way you've never heard before. Your Throat chakra and your vagus nerve share literal anatomical territory — and when you can't speak the truth about your burnout, there's a measurable neurological reason why.

✦ The Competence Mask Somatic Audit — A brand-new practice built specifically for women whose nervous system collapse is hidden behind professional performance. This is not a standard body scan. This goes somewhere standard practices can't reach.

This episode is for you if:

  • You're still showing up, still delivering, still functioning — but something underneath feels like it's eroding
  • You've answered "I'm fine" or "just tired" so many times you don't know what the real answer is anymore
  • Your throat tightens when someone asks how you really are
  • You've suspected you might be burned out but told yourself you should be able to handle it — you're trained for this
  • You want your body to start telling the truth again

Research from the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology found that healthcare workers with the highest clinical competence were also the least likely to recognize their own burnout. The better you are at your job, the more invisible your collapse becomes. Understanding this changes everything.

This podcast is for women healers over 50 navigating burnout and compassion fatigue who want nervous-system-informed insight into exhaustion, purpose loss, polyvagal regulation, chakra healing, and embodied recovery so they can move from survival into clarity, stability, and restoration.

In this episode, you'll learn why nervous systems completely collapse and why this is the most dangerous kind of burnout there is. Empowering brilliant women in healthcare over 50 to transform burnout and compassion fatigue into renewed passion. Reigniting your spark to create a life that energizes you every single day. I'm your host, Dr. Jules. Let's get to it. Okay, girl. Stay with me today because by the end of this episode, you're going to understand three things that could genuinely save your career and your health First. The professional competence trap. Second, the vagus FAA connection, and third, the competence mask somatic audit. So let's get to it. Here's something I really want you to understand right out of the gate, the most dangerous form of burnout isn't the kind where you stop functioning. It's the kind where you keep functioning beautifully on the outside while your nervous system is in complete collapse on the inside. So researchers call this Functional Dissociation and Dr. Bessel VanDerKolk's Landmark work on trauma and the body Documents just how high achieving highly trained individuals can maintain external performance while experiencing profound internal dysregulation. See the body keeps score, but competence keeps the scorecard hidden. That's right. A 2023 study published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology found that healthcare workers with the highest levels of clinical skill and professional identity were also the least likely to self-identify as burned out even when objective measures of allostatic Load said otherwise. So let that land for a second. Y'all. Think about it. And I think some of this, as I work with these folks in coaching and counseling, there's shame or some kind of, I don't wanna say ego, I. Um, but there's some kind of shame that comes up that, uh, really kind of prevents them, uh, from admitting that, yeah, I'm burned out and I mean, I, I'm coming to this from having been there, done that. Oh, man. Ah, see, the better you are at your job, the harder it is to admit that your nervous system is flipping on fire. And here's the neurological piece that you're training most likely never covered. I'm only, I mean, I've been a a professor in a counseling program for a lot of years, and only the last couple of years have I even started talking about the need for nervous system regulation and how that can impact your career. We're not taught that in school, especially those of us that are 30 years out. They should have, but the research has come a long way. So let's catch up. Now. What do you say? See, mirror neurons are very important and you have a system of neurons in your prefrontal cortex that fire in direct response to your client's emotional states. When your client is in pain, your nervous system literally simulates that pain. This is the neurological basis of empathy, and it's also the neurological basis of compassion fatigue. Dr. Matthew, one of the leading researchers in compassion fatigue describes what happens to helping professionals as vicarious traumatization. Where repeated exposure to other suffering create genuine neurological changes. It's a little disturbing if you think about it, y'all. These are not metaphorical changes. These are measurable structural changes in how your brain processes threat and safety, and I think this. Is what makes this so insidious for us helpers, professional helpers. See, we are trained to override those signals. Emotional regulation under pressure is a core clinical competency. It is. We use the PCPE in my program to assess students and that is part of it. We learn through years of training and practice to appear calm when our nervous system is fucking freaking out, screaming on the inside, we learn to perform composure. We become experts at the exact skill that masks our own collapse. I mean, we could praise for it. Oh, you could stay so cool and calm under such pressure inside, we're bubbling everywhere. Oh, there's a concept in neuroscience called Allostatic Load, which we've talked about before, but this is the cumulative. Wear and tear on your body and brain from chronic stress. So I want you to think of it like a biological debt that accumulates every time your stress response activates, and never fully deactivates Research from Dr. Bruce McEwen at Rockefeller University, and he's the scientist who essentially defined allostatic load. He found that chronic stress di dysregulation, it doesn't look like a dramatic breakdown. It looks like a subtle progressive erosion, cognitive fog, emotional blunting, sleep disruption, immune compromise, hormonal dysregulation, and which for those of us over 50 is really layered on top of menopause and this. It can amplify everything. See, girl, we don't feel like we're collapsing per se. You are gonna feel like you're tired, just a little flat, a little disconnected, like something's off, but you can't quite name it. And because you're still showing up, still functioning, still delivering, you tell yourself, well, hell, I'm fine. Something's just off. Ah, sweet soul. That's not fine. That's a nervous system in survival mode. Wearing a professional costume. I know this personally. I was a licensed professional counselor's supervisor, finishing my doctorate, teaching other therapists running. Practice, and I was so burned out, I could barely recognize myself. Hell, I lost sight of who I was. I did not recognize myself. And I write about it in my book in Pursuit of Soul Joy, because I want you to know the crash does not announce itself. It arrives quietly underneath competence until one day it doesn't. Now I want to take you somewhere that genuinely excites me because this is the intersection of chakra psychology and neuroscience, and this is something that almost nobody is talking about, and it directly explains why you can't speak the truth about your burnout, even when part of you desperately wants to, and we're talking about your throat chakra. And its relationship to what Dr. Steven Po. Hayes calls the ventral vagal pathway. Here's the science. The vagus nerve, the 10th cranial nerve, the superhighway of your autonomic nervous system has two primary branches, the ventral vagal branch, and this governs your social engagement system literally runs through your throat. It isn't that amazing. It innervates your larynx. Your Phenix, your vocal cords, it is automatically located in the same territory as your throat chakra. So when you are in a state of psychological safety, your nervous system is regulated. Your ventral vagal pathway is active. Your voice has warmth and res resonance. You can speak honestly, you can express yourself fully. You can say, you know what? I'm struggling. I need some help. I'm not okay. But when you are in chronic stress, when your nervous system has shifted into sympathetic activation or dorsal vagal shutdown. And this is what allostatic overload looks like. That ventral vagal pathway goes quiet. Your social engagement system that shuts down. And here's what that means in the language of chakra psychology, your throat chakra goes underactive The throat chakra governs self-expression. Authentic communication and the capacity, ah, this is so important y'all the capacity to speak your truth. And when it's underactive, when that ventral vagal pathway is dysregulated, your experience is different. You're gonna experience what chakra psychology describes as energetic dishonesty, not lying on purpose. You, you wouldn't do that. The dishonesty of saying, I'm fine because your nervous system has literally lost access to the pathway that would allow you to say anything else. So research on vagal tone, which is essentially a measure of how flexible your nervous system can shift between states. It shows that people with low vagal tone have significantly reduced capacity for authentic emotional expression. They report feeling emotionally muted. Anyone I know, I've been there, they're disconnected from their own experience. They're unable to articulate their internal state even when they want to. Does any of that sound familiar? The way you answer? How are you doing with fine or busy? Not because you're hiding, but because the real answer feels completely inaccessible and it's not a character flaw that is a low vagal tone in your social system. That social engagement system that is a throat chakra that has been suppressed by years of swallowing your truth to keep the peace. And professional masking, and here's what I believe makes this even more layered for us. Gals over 50 who've been in the biz for a while, research from Dr. Christine Northrop. And others on hormonal influence. On vagal tone shows that declining estrogen and perimenopause and menopause directly impacts parasympathetic nervous system regulation. So see your capacity for emotional resilience. An authentic expression is physiologically altered during this time of life. On top of everything else that's going on, the system is working against you, y'all. It's not a personal failure at all. When your throat chakra is balanced, when that ventral vagal pathway is online, something remarkable becomes possible. See girl, you're gonna be able to say, you know what, I'm burned out. I have compassion fatigue. I'm falling apart under this professional performance, and I need support. Not as a confession, not as a failure, as a flippant truth, as honest self-expression. That is the foundation. Of actual healing. See, here's the thing. You cannot heal what you cannot name. You cannot name what your nervous system has suppressed into silence. So restoring your throat chakra isn't a spiritual exercise disconnected from your biology. It is directly measurably tied to restoring vagal tone. To bringing your social engagement system back online so that honest communication becomes possible again. So I wanna teach you something. I've developed specifically for women like us clinicians, nurses, therapists, healers, educators who've spent decades training our nervous systems to perform under pressure. Standard somatic check-ins often don't work for us at first because we are so conditioned to override body signals that we do a body scan and think, well, hell, I feel fine. Not because we are fine, but because we become expert. Girl. Let me say that again. Underline expert at not feeling this practice is different. I call it the competence mask somatic audit, and it's designed to find what your professional performance is actively hiding. So to do this, and if you're driving book market, come back. But I need you to find a seated position, not relaxed. I want you seated upright, the way you'd sit in a professional context, in your office chair, at your desk, the way you sit when you are performing competence. This is intentional. Now bring your attention to your performance posture. Feel how your body holds itself when it is being a professional. Notice the set of your jaw, the position of your shoulders, the way your chest might be lifted or held, the tension in your throat. Girl, don't you change anything or judge anything. Just be curious and feel it. Pay attention to those shoulders. Are they upper in your ears or lower? Now, I want you to ask your body a question. You are not asking your mind, you're asking your body, and here it is. What am I holding up right now? Not what you're thinking, not what you're carrying. Let your body answer in sensation. Heaviness somewhere, bracing somewhere, numbness somewhere, ache somewhere. Here's where the practice gets specific to compassion fatigue. Scan your throat. Literally bring your awareness to the front of your neck, your vocal cords, the hinge of your jaw. Is there tightness? Constriction, a health quality? Something like, um, I don't know, something. Like it wants to move but can't. That is your throat chakra under pressure. That is your ventral vagal pathway telling you there is something it cannot say. I, so now I want you to hum one single sustained note. Any pitch from your chest, not your throat. Not singing just a resonant hum through closed lips. Do this three times y This isn't a breathing exercise. This is a vagal toning through vocalization and research from the University of Michigan shows that self-generated humming directly stimulates the vagus nerve. Through vibration of the larynx branch activating the ventral vagal pathway, you are literally using sound to bring your social engagement system back online. After your three hums, I want you to scan your throat again. Notice any shift. However subtle that shift is in your throat chakra, beginning to open that shift is your nervous system remembering it has access to expression. So now in your journal and y'all, this is a crucial part, write one true sentence. Not, I feel tired or I'm stressed. One true sentence about your burnout, about your compassion fatigue that your professional performance has been hiding. It could be one line, it can be uncomfortable. Let it be honest. That sentence that your nervous system finally saying what it's been holding. Okay, so sweet Soul. Here's what you, I want you to know the professional competence trap is real. It's neurologically documented, and it does not mean you failed. It means the system extracted exactly what it was designed to extract from someone with your level of training and dedication and that throat chakra, that vagus Vata connection. Explains why you can't speak your truth. Not as a spiritual vagueness, but as a measurable autonomic nervous system dysregulation that good news can be restored. And the confidence mask Somatic Audit gives you a practice designed specifically for you, high functioning healers whose compassion fatigue hides in plain sight. And if you want the full 12 week roadmap of how I came back from my complete disconnection and burnout. In my, book In Pursuit of Soul Joy, there's a complete nervous system healing journey, and it's where we go deep. But right now, while that spark is still lit, do the audit, write the sentence, let your body tell the truth. Your performance has been hiding. So together we rise together. Your nervous system's not broken. It's been brilliant at surviving something that was never sustainable. Take care of you and I'll see you next week. Sweet soul. Give yourself what you actually need. Tap the show notes right now to discover your somatic signature, because if bubble baths and breathing exercises could fix this, you'd already be back to your radiant self. You need the right map. Let's find out which of the four somatic signatures your body is using. Girl, this isn't homework. This is a homecoming.
