Compassion Fatigue Cure: From Burnout to Radiance for Women Healers 50+
Compassion Fatigue Gets Worse With Experience and the Neuroscience Explains Exactly Why
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
This is episode 100. And the truth we're telling today is the one nobody said at your graduation, your licensing exam, or your first supervision session.
The longer you do this work — the more skilled, the more compassionate, the more present you are — the more deeply your brain has been rewired toward depletion.
Not because you did anything wrong. Because of neuroscience.
This episode will give you the research-backed explanation for why decades of clinical experience quietly compounds your vulnerability and a somatic practice specifically designed for long-tenured healers who have tried everything else.
Here's what's inside:
✦ The Cumulative Rewiring Truth — Why the capacity for deep empathy that makes you exceptional at your job is also the primary neurological transmission pathway for vicarious trauma.
✦ The Crown Chakra Reclamation — Your Sahasrara holds every ounce of wisdom, depth, and earned understanding your decades of service created. Chronic depletion didn't destroy it. It buried it. There's a difference.
✦ The Neural Pathway Reset Ritual — A three-phase somatic practice built at the intersection of neuroplasticity research and Crown chakra activation. This uses vagal toning, piezoelectric skull resonance, and state-dependent learning to create the neurological conditions for building new default routes. It is a nervous system rewiring experience.
This episode is for you if:
- You have 15, 20, 30+ years in clinical work and you feel less resilient now than when you started — not more
- You've lost the sense of purpose and meaning that made you choose this work in the first place
- The standard self-care advice stopped working years ago and you know in your body that something deeper is happening
- You can feel the weight of decades of absorbed trauma stories and you have nowhere to put it
- You want to understand — at a neurological level — why this is happening, so you can stop blaming yourself for it
A 2022 meta-analysis in Frontiers in Psychology found that long-tenured clinicians showed higher rates of emotional exhaustion and cognitive disruption than early-career clinicians — despite having more tools available. More experience. Still worse outcomes. Because the damage isn't cognitive. It's structural. And it requires something structural to address it.
Your brain can build new pathways. Neuroplasticity research confirms it. Your Crown chakra holds the wisdom everything you've witnessed has built in you. This episode is the beginning of accessing both.
One hundred episodes of truth. One hundred choices to heal instead of hide.

Stop trying to "Self-Care" your way out of a physiological crisis.
If bubble baths and deep breathing actually fixed compassion fatigue, you wouldn't still be staring at the ceiling at 2:00 AM. Your burnout isn't an attitude problem, it's a biological pattern. You are stuck in one of four distinct "somatic signatures." Until you identify yours, you are just throwing water on a grease fire.
Stop guessing. Find the leak. Fix the circuit.

This podcast is for women healers over 50 navigating burnout and compassion fatigue who want nervous-system-informed insight into exhaustion, purpose loss, polyvagal regulation, chakra healing, and embodied recovery so they can move from survival into clarity, stability, and restoration.
In this episode, you'll learn that the longer you do this work, the more deeply your brain has been rewired toward depletion. That's not a coincidence. That is neuroscience. Empowering brilliant women in healthcare over 50 to transform burnout and compassion fatigue into renewed passion. Reigniting your spark to create a life that energizes you every single day. I'm your host, Dr. Jules. Let's get to it. Okay, sweet. So before we go anywhere today, I have to stop and acknowledge that this moment is actually big. Y'all. This is. The 100th episode, 100 Truth Telling Sessions 100 times. We refuse to pretend this work doesn't cost us something. If you've been here since the beginning, thank you. That's 100 times you showed up for yourself. This community for the Radical Act of choosing healing over hiding. And if today is your first episode, welcome. You just walked into something that might change your life because that's exactly what this 100th episode is about. The truth of what decades of helping quietly does to your brain and the science of how you can actually rebuild it. So stick around. Here's what you're getting today. First, the cumulative rewiring truth. Second, the crown chakra reclamation, and third, the neural pathway reset ritual. So come on, let's get to it. Okay. Oh, the vulnerability and nobody named, here's what your graduate program, your licensure supervisor, and every continuing education course you've ever taken, failed to tell you the longer you practice. The more skilled, the more empathic, the more experienced you become, the more neurologically vulnerable you are to burnout and compassion fatigue, and y'all, that's not in spite of your competence. It's because of it. As Dr. Charles Figley, who essentially founded the field of compassion fatigue research documented, he. And this was documented in his foundational work on secondary traumatic stress y. He found that the capacity for empathy, the very quality that makes you exceptional at your job, is also the primary transmission pathway for vicarious trauma. So the better you are at feeling with your clients, the more your brain absorbs their neurological distress as if it were your own. And after decades, that absorption is not a single event. It is a cumulative architectural change in how your brain processes threat, safety, emotion and meaning. So I wanna give you the neurological picture here because I want you to understand that this. Right here, Julie, fix this. So let me give you the neurological picture, because I want you to understand this. At a cellular level, your brain builds neural pathways through repetition, right? And every thought you think, every response you generate, every emotional pattern you repeat, it carves a physical route between neurons. Think about that, a physical path between neurons. So the more you travel that route, the more alienated it becomes, the faster, more automatic, more default it becomes. So neuroscientist Donald Hebb described this back in 1949, y'all, and he described it with a principle that's become foundational to modern neuroplasticity research neurons. The fire together wire together, so every time a pattern activates, the connection strengthens. Now, think about what you've been doing for 20, 30, maybe 40 years, you've been absorbing trauma narratives. Suppressing your own emotional responses to hold space for someone else's. Your powering through exhaustion because your next client needs you. You're saying yes when your nervous system was screaming. No, you're performing composure in crisis. You're disconnecting from your body so your mind could stay present for theirs. You have fired those neurons together thousands of times. The pathway from I'm depleted to I'll give anyway. Is not a dirt trail? Not anymore, no, y'all. It's a six lane highway. It is your brain's default route. So a 2022 meta-analysis published in Frontiers in Psychology, examine compassion fatigue, progression across career length and mental health professionals. The findings, y'all, the findings were striking. Symptoms did not plateau after the first five years. They compounded. Long tenured clinicians showed higher rates of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and cognitive disruption than those earlier in their careers, despite having more clinical tools and coping strategies available to them, more tools still worse outcomes. Why? Well, it's because tools are cognitive and the damage isn't primarily cognitive, it's structural. So let's look at the research from Dr. Martin teacher at Harvard on chronic stress and neural architecture. It was found that prolonged activation of the stress response system, thank cortisol flooding, sympathetic nervous system dysregulation, suppressed parasympathetic recovery. This creates measurable changes in the prefrontal. Cortex function, hippocampal volume, and amygdala reactivity. So in plain language, decades of unprocessed compassion fatigue, physically alters your capacity for creativity, working memory, emotional regulation, and meaning making, not age, not weakness, architecture. And for those of us over 50, a 20, 21 study. Confirmed that declining estrogen at menopause directly reduces the brain's stress recovery capacity, meaning the same allostatic load that a 30 5-year-old clinician might partially recover from becomes significantly harder to metabolize at 52 or 68. The system is stacked against us in ways that y'all nobody told us to prepare for. So here's what I want you to hold alongside all of that research, the same decades that grooved those depletion pathways also gave you something extraordinary. Clinical intuition that only comes from thousands of hours of presence. The ability to read a room, a body, a silence in ways no textbook can teach. Wisdom earned through witnessing the full range of human suffering and resilience. Capacity for depth. You've got that. Newer clinicians simply haven't had time to develop what you have and your crown chakra, that chakra at the very top of your skull, it holds all of that girl, every single bit of it. And that's exactly where we're going next. So in chakra psychology, your crown chakra, like I said, it's located at the very top of your head. Governs thought, enlightenment, consciousness, and your connection to something larger than any single clinical interaction. And when it's balanced and open, oh y'all, it allows you to live in the present moment. Access genuine self trusts and experience. This is what I can only describe as contentment with the self. You actually are not the self performing competence for everyone else, and that might sound distant right now. It might sound like something that belongs, I don't know in someone else's life, but I want you to hold it anyway. I. Please do that for yourself. Sweet soul. Hold onto that because here is what's true about your crown chakra specifically. It doesn't disappear under chronic stress. Yeah, it's gonna get buried, but there's a difference when the neural depletion pathways. Run your system when the neural depletion pathways run your system, when decades of absorbed trauma and suppressed self-expression have dysregulated your autonomic nervous system into a near permanent, low grade survival state, girl, your crown chakra, it's gonna go underactive. And chakra psychology describes the state as spiritual. Depression. Not clinical depression, though they can coexist. Spiritual depression is the specific. Loss of meaning, purpose, and the sense that your work connects to anything beyond the next appointment, you stop asking the big questions because you're too exhausted to hold the answers. You lose access to the transcendent perspective that made you choose this work in the first place. Your function well, sometimes you function brilliantly. But without the connection to consciousness and wisdom that used to make the functioning feel like a calling. And that's different neurologically, this maps directly onto what researchers call meaning maintenance failure. A state documented in burnout literature where the brain loses access to the neural networks associated with purpose, coherence, and future orientation. And that prefrontal cortex, the one that's responsible for your capacity to find meaning in suffering and frontal cortex, is one of the primary regions impacted by chronic allostatic overload. So girl, your your crown chakra, it, it's not gone. Your meaning networks aren't destroyed. They're running on empty because decades of giving has depleted the neurological infrastructure that keeps them lit. I, so when your crown chakra begins to reopen, when those meaning networks come back online, something shifts that no clinical technique produces. You stop fighting your decades of experience and start drawing on them. You access the wisdom underneath the depletion. You find that all that witnessing, all that holding space, all that accumulated understanding of human suffering has created in you a depth of soul that is genuinely extra. That's not sentiment, that is the potential of a healed crown chakra in a long tenured clinician, and it's what I want to point you toward with this next practice. So standard chakra, balancing practices, mantras, visualizations, meditations, they're valuable. Hear me? They are valuable. Just like taking your hormones valuable and I use'em, but they're primarily cognitive and attentional practices and as we just established, the damage from decades of the compassion fatigue isn't primarily cognitive, it's structural. It's in your beautiful body. So what I've developed for long tenured healers is something different, and I call it the neural pathway reset ritual. It works simultaneously at the level of the nervous system, the somatic body, and the crown chakra's energetic field. It uses neuroplasticity research on state dependent learning alongside somatic activation. To create the conditions your brain actually needs to begin building new default roots. This takes about eight minutes and you need to do it seated upright. So phase one. It is depletion mapping, let's say about two minutes. You sit in your clinical posture, the way you sit when you're being a professional, upright, held, composed, and this is intentional. We're entering the nervous system state that carries old pathways. I want you to do a full body scan, but with a specific lens. You're looking for the weight, not the pain, not the tension weight. Where in your body do you feel the accumulated heaviness of decades of holding space for others? Let it register without trying to release it lower back. Chest base of the skull Jaw. I want you to place both hands there. Right here, right now. Wherever the weight lives most, don't rub or soothe. Just contact. You are acknowledging embody language. Your nervous system understands that the weight is real and it is yours, and you're finally paying attention to it. Phase two, the resonance reset. Three minutes. This is where we bring in vagal toning combined with crown chakra activation, and the research behind this combination is genuinely exciting. A 2019 study in the Frontiers in Neuroscience found that self-generated vocal resonance. Specifically low frequency humming and toning activates the auricular branch of the vagus nerve. Measurably shifting autonomic state from sympathetic activation toward ventral vagal regulation. Y'all within minutes, simultaneously sound and vibration directed toward the crown of the head. Activates electrical properties of the skull, meaning the bones themselves, conduct an amplify vibration. I know that's a mouthful and you might've, you might've completely tuned me out there, but let's get back to it. Here's what you're gonna do. Drop your hands to your thighs, palms up. That's a posture of receiving rather than holding, and I want you to close your eyes and begin toning. The Sanskrit seed, syllable for the chakra, and that's a home. But I want you to do it differently than you've heard it before. Start the sound in your chest. Feel it there first. Then let it rise slowly through your throat into the back of your skull. And finally vibrate at the very crown of your head, and let the mm at the end extend until you genuinely feel the vibration in your scalp. Do it six times slower each time, each one reaching a little higher. What you're doing, doing neurologically is walking a new path. Activating your social engagement system through vagal toning, while simultaneously directing attention and sensation upward toward your crown. You're building a new neural route that connects embodied safety with higher consciousness. And y'all, that's not a metaphor. That is a state dependent neuroplasticity. In action. Phase three, the wisdom harvest. After your final tone, I want you to sit in the silence crown of your head, slightly buzzing nervous system shifted, and ask your body, not your mind, your body, one question. What do I know from all these years that I haven't let myself claim? Do not reach for the answer. Let that answer arrive as sensation, warmth somewhere, expansion somewhere, a quiet knowing that doesn't need words. Then open your journal and write without editing for two minutes, whatever comes. This is your crown chakra speaking the wisdom. Your decades of service built surfacing through a nervous system that is finally briefly out of survival mode that rioting. That's your new neural pathway beginning to form. That's the brain finding a different default route from depletion to wisdom, from survival to meaning from years of giving to finely receiving. What those years have made you. Okay, sweet soul. Here's what 100 episodes and today's research have confirmed. The decades of helping that rewired your brain toward depletion did not destroy you. They deepened you. The neural pathways to burnout are real and documented, and not your fault. And neuroplasticity research confirms. What I've seen in clinical work for close to 30 years, those pathways can be rebuilt. I did it for myself. You can do it for you too. Your beautiful Crown chakra holds wisdom. Everything you've witnessed has created in you and the neural pathway. Reset ritual gives your system a door back to it. And if you want the full system, grab my book in Pursuit of Soul Joy. But right now, while the hundredth episode energy is still alive in your body, do the ritual. Write the harvest. Let your decades of service finally give something back to you. 100 episodes, 100 choices to heal instead of hide. We rise together and I'll see you in episode 1 0 1. Sweet soul. Give yourself what you actually need. Tap the show notes right now to discover your somatic signature, because if bubble baths and breathing exercises could fix this, you'd already be back to your radiant self. You need the right map. Let's find out which of the four somatic signatures your body is using. Girl, this isn't homework. This is a homecoming.
