You are still showing up. Still working. Still producing. Still holding it together.

And from the outside? Everyone would say you're fine.

But inside — something has gone quiet. Not dramatic. Not chaotic. Just gone.

If you are a woman healer over 50 who is fully functional on the outside and completely numb on the inside, this episode is going to name what has been living in your body without a diagnosis: functional freeze — and it is not burnout. It is what happens after burnout when your nervous system has run out of options.

This podcast is for women healers over 50 navigating burnout and compassion fatigue who want nervous-system-informed insight into exhaustion, cognitive fog, identity loss, purpose erosion, and embodied recovery so they can move from survival into clarity, stability, and restoration.

In this episode, Dr. Julie Merriman breaks down:

  • What functional freeze actually is — a hybrid dorsal vagal shutdown with sympathetic override — and why it targets high-achieving women specifically
  • The research behind high-functioning numbness, including Dr. Stephen Porges' Polyvagal Theory and Bruce McEwen's work on allostatic load
  • Why Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett's interoception research explains how your body stops sending clear signals about what you want, need, and who you are
  • How the Root Chakra and Throat Chakra are directly dysregulated in functional freeze — and what that costs you at the level of identity
  • What "Sacred Resentment" is, why it's information rather than bitterness, and what it's telling you
  • A step-by-step somatic practice — Micro-Thawing the System — that works with the state your body is actually in, not around it

This is not about motivation. It is not about mindset. And it is not about needing a vacation.

This is about what happens when a nervous system has been under chronic emotional labor, relentless caregiving, and unrelenting responsibility for too long without repair. Your system adapted. Brilliantly. Protectively.

And in doing so… you became the Floating Head of Competence. Functional. Effective. Untethered from your own aliveness.

You stopped feeling joy. Desire went quiet. Creativity flattened. And somewhere along the way, you stopped asking for more — not because you don't deserve it, but because your system stopped believing it was available.

This episode is the moment that changes.

Because functional freeze is not who you are. It is what your nervous system built to keep you going when keeping going was the only option left.

And there is a way back.

Stop trying to "Self-Care" your way out of a physiological crisis.

If bubble baths and deep breathing actually fixed compassion fatigue, you wouldn't still be staring at the ceiling at 2:00 AM. Your burnout isn't an attitude problem, it's a biological pattern. You are stuck in one of four distinct "somatic signatures." Until you identify yours, you are just throwing water on a grease fire.

In this episode, you'll finally have a name for the state you've been living in, where you are doing everything right on the outside, but inside you've quietly disappeared. Empowering brilliant women in healthcare over 50 to transform burnout and compassion fatigue into renewed passion. Reigniting your spark to create a life that energizes you every single day. I'm your host, Dr. Jules. Let's get to it. So stay with me because by the end of this episode, you're going to understand the exact nervous system state that creates this high functioning numbness. You're going to see why this is a biological adaptation to prolonged emotional load, and I'm going to walk you through a somatic and chakra based reactivation process that gently. Honestly be begin, begins to bring you back online. Oh, sweet. Soul, thank you so much for being here. If you're new, welcome and if you're returning, thank you so much for being part of this community today. I wanna talk to the woman who's still showing up. You're still working, you're still helping, you're still producing, you're still holding it all together. And if someone looked at you from the outside, they would say, well girl, she's fine. She's badass. Look at all she's doing. But on the inside, ugh, something has gone quiet, not dramatic, not chaotic, just gone. You don't feel it up. You don't feel desire, girl, if you're honest, you don't feel much of anything. And what makes this so confusing? Is that you're still functioning, so no one's concerned. Not even you at first until one day you realize, I'm here, but I'm not in my life. That's what we're naming today. Sweetness. I want you to know something before we go any further. This is not aging. It's not personality. And it's not just who you are now. This is your nervous system doing exactly what it was designed to do. And today we're going to understand it because we have to have that awareness of, of understanding so that we can begin to come back from it. So let's get to it. Okay. The research. Let's get to the research and, um, I have a cold, I apologize, I apologize about the sound of my voice. But anyway, back to the, back to the show. Let's get very clear, if we shall, about what's actually happening in that gorgeous body of yours. Because most people think burnout looks like complete collapse. You know, you can't get outta bed, you can't function. Everyone can see it. But for women like you, it's not gonna look that way. It looks like competence. Good old Dr. Po Hayes, the neuroscientist who developed the polyvagal theory, mapped three primary states of nerve of our nervous system. I talk about this almost every show. I think it's uber important, important, and I want you. I really, I invite you this next week to put your hand on your heart chakra and ask yourself, what nervous state am I in right now? Identify it, become curious about it. Only then are we gonna work our way back to being fully alive in our body, but here are the three. Nervous system states first, the ventral vagal activation, and that's the yummy one. We're safe, connected, present, alive. And the second is sympathetic activation. This is where you mobilize, you push, you perform, you produce your fight or flight response. And I tell y'all, I, I, I refuse to live as a hypocrite and I'm gonna own it. I've been in that this week. It's a yucky state to be in. We are undergoing our CACREP site visit for our accreditation at the university where I'm the department head of this department, and I'm the point person. I'm. And I feel very, very driven to make sure we get accredited for my faculty and my students. And I, I am running around in this sympathetic activation and I have a cold, it, it pushed my immune system down and I got a cold from it. So if I put my hand on my heart, I know. Yeah. Oh, sweetness. You are in sympathetic activation. How can I move myself back into, um. Back into my ventral vagal activation. Uh, okay. Our third state is, and I think one that nobody talks about for high functioning women, and this is the dorsal vagal shut down. This is where your system, after running out of safe options, pulls the brake. Your emergency brake gets stuck. It shuts down sensation, it dems emotional access. It conserves. Now, most burnout conversations stop at sympathetic activation, the pushing, the overdoing, the inability to slow down. But what happens to women who have been in chronic emotional labor, relentless caregiving, and high responsibility roles for years there? I mean, this is a. Um, an accumulation. You don't just burn out, you override. You push past sympathetic activation. Your system drops not into obvious collapse, but into what I call functional freeze. And it's a hybrid state. Dorsal vagals, shut down. Running underneath a sympathetic override sounds like fun, right? Translation. Your body is conserving energy and dampening sensation while your cognitive and behavioral systems are executing tasks. So girl, you're running that staff meeting, but you feel nothing. You give a speech with a standing ovation. Feel nothing. Been there, done that you care for your patient. Feel nothing. You sit across from your partner. Nothing. I talked with a beautiful soul this week who? Called this and the way she described it, and I think it's a good explanation, um, she said her life force just felt like nothing. She was comparing it to the life force in her twenties, waking up, just really motivated and excited. We're gonna go do this, that and the other. And now just waking up and going, Ugh, the life force has just been challenged. You're, you're that phoenix that needs to rise from the ashes, right? Well, there's research. That backs all this up. Well, lots of research, but I'm gonna talk to you about Mccuen's research at Rockefeller University. And he looked at allostatic load and what his research tells us is that when a system carries chronic, unrelenting stress without adequate repair, hear me there, adequate repair, and you overachieving lovely ladies.'cause I'm looking in the mirror. We don't do well at that repair piece, but when this happens, it doesn't just wear down, it adapts. And one of those adaptations is emotional and sensory blunting. Your system decides unconsciously, brilliantly, that if you can't feel the weight of what you're carrying, you're gonna keep on carrying it. This is not disconnection as a choice. This is disconnection as protection. You gave your body a task. Your body lived up to it. We love our nervous system for doing this for us, but now we have to retrain it. But let's look at the identity cost before we go there. Because here is where it gets devastating because functional freeze doesn't just take your energy, it erodes your identity. You begin to lose access to joy. Curiosity disappears, desire goes quiet. Creativity, flattens pleasure because becomes something that happens to someone else. And over time you stop asking for more. And it's not because you don't deserve it, but it's because your system no longer believes it's available. So you adapt. You become the woman who is fine, the one who doesn't need much, the one who can handle it, the one everyone depends on. And slowly you disappear, disappear. Inside a life you built. So Dr. Lisa Feldman, Barrett's research on interception and that's your body's ability, uh, to sense itself tells us that when the nervous system is in chronic protective shutdown, the brain actually reduces the resolution of internal signals. So what does that mean? Well, you don't just feel numb emotionally. Your body stops sending you clear messages about what you want, what you need, who you even are. You go hungry without even realizing it. You needed to pee 10 minutes ago or thir an hour ago and just didn't even realize it. You become a floating head of competence. Functional, effective, but untethered from your own aliveness. So let's take this one layer deeper because your system is not only neurological, it is energetic and functional freeze almost always shows up in two primary energy centers, your root chakra and your throat chakra. So your root chakra governs your most primal sense of safety and belonging. And when this center is dysregulated, which it is in, when you're in chronic burnout, your body does not feel safe to stop. So what do you do? You stay in motion. You override exhaustion. You override signals. You override yourself because somewhere. In your system, there is a belief usually shaped by years of caregiving culture, medical training, counseling training, education training, or early family roles, that your value is your function. Mm. And that if you stop something terrible is gonna happen. And then your throat chakra constricts. Because speaking your truth requires energy, and you have swallowed that truth for way too many years. And right now you don't have the energy for consequence. So you don't say, I'm overwhelmed. I don't want this. This is too much. You stay quiet. You swallow your resentment, you swallow your needs, you swallow your truth, and that silence. Girlfriend that is self abandonment. I call this sacred resentment, and that's the accumulation of what you have swallowed in service of everyone else's comfort. It's not bitterness. It is information. It is your beautiful body, your system telling you something real in me has been left behind. So, okay, sweet. So I'm not going to give you something performative. I'm not going to ask you to breathe a certain way or ground yourself or imagine a healing light. I'm going to give you something that works in the state you are actually in, and this is called micro thawing the system, and it matters. That we go gently, girl. A frozen system does not respond to intensity. It responds to safety. So I want you to do this with me. Pause if you need to. First, you're going to orient. Without effort. So that's just sitting where you are. Don't fix your posture. Do not try to do it right. Just let your eyes slowly move across the room. You are not scanning for danger. You are just noticing. Notice color, notice light. Notice edges. What you're doing is activating what neuroscientists Dr. Po Hayes calls the social engagement system, the branch of your vagus nerve that tells your brain, I, Julie, you're not in danger right now. This is how we begin to loosen the grip, next contact and containment. Place one hand on your chest, one on your lower abdomen, not to change anything, just to feel contact. What you're activating here are the receptors in your skin. The pressure sensitive nerve endings that would engage gently begin to signal safety to the insular cortex. Dr. Tiffany Field's research on tactile stimulation shows that this kind of deliberate contact reduces cortisol and activates the parasympathetic response. We are reintroducing you to you. It's your homecoming. Step three, low tone vagal activation. This is your root chakra awakening. Inhale slowly through your nose and as you exhale, make a low, slow, steady sound V long enough to feel the vibration move through your chest. Do it again. This is vagal toning through low frequency vibration, and that's the same mechanism behind practices used in clinical polyvagal intervention. The vibration travels along the vagus nerve and begins to interrupt the dorsal vagal free state energetically, that low sound lives in your root chakra. You are not just toning your nervous system, you're telling your body your name, Julie, whatever. Say your name. I am safe enough to return. You always need to say your name before. Statements, your, your brain, your body needs to know you're talking to you. And then the fourth step, throat chakra, voice return. And now this, you're gonna say out loud, even if your voice is small, even if it shakes, say this, Julie, your name, I am still here. Pause, then say. Julie, I have not disappeared. I have been protecting pause. And then Julie, I am allowed to exist beyond what I produce, not perform, not prove, exist. Let your body hear you say that because your throat chakra does not heal through silence. It heals through spoken even softly words into the room. Okay, so you've got your activity. I'm gonna pause a hot second here'cause I've gotta say something to you directly. Because if this episode is land landing remotely, if you're recognizing yourself in the numbness, in the quiet disappearance, and going through the motions, what I'm about to share is exactly what I wrote for you. My new book, are We Gonna Have Sex or what? The Midlife Guide for Reigniting Desire Reclaiming Your Body and Learning to Live Fully Alive is here. I wrote it because functional freeze doesn't just rob you of your energy girl. It's gonna rob you of pleasure, desire, your felt sense of being a woman in a body that belongs to you. The women I sat across from in my practice for years and years and years, brilliant, capable, exhausted, weren't just burned out professionally. They had gone numb in every direction and what they needed wasn't more tools or another protocol, they needed a way back to themselves back home. My book is a Homecoming. That is exactly what this book is about. Go over to my website. Well, I'll put the link in the show notes, but it's at my website, Julie Merriman, www www julie merriman phd.com. Um, if you grab it there. You will be in a Julie. Erase that it, but it's a val. Available now my website or Amazon. Go get yourself a copy. Okay, so today we named something that has been unnamed in your life for a long time. You learned. That you're not just tired, you're not broken, you're not losing yourself. You're in a state of functional freeze, and that's a nervous system adaptation to carrying too much emotional labor for far too damn long without enough repair. You learn that this is a hybrid state, dorsal vagal down underneath sympathetic override, and it's the specific mechanism behind high functioning numbness. And you learn, your root chakra is dysregulated. When your body doesn't feel safe enough to stop and that your throat chakra constricts. When you swallow your truth, you learn that functional freeze doesn't respond to force. It responds to safety, small, deliberate, honest return. And you experienced a practice micro thawing, the system that works with the actual state your body is in, not passed, not around it. Oh, we're not gonna pass it. We're not gonna go around it. We're gonna go through it. And most importantly, sweet cell, you learned that this is not the end of you. This is the moment you start coming back. If this episode put language to something you've been quietly living. I want you to share it. Please, not because it's content, but because there's a woman right now silently disappearing, who thinks this is just how life is now. So send her this, the one who is fine, but not really. And if you're ready to go deeper, shoot me an email. I got stuff for you. Okay? I'll see you next week. Sweet soul. Give yourself what you actually need. Tap the show notes right now to discover your somatic signature, because if bubble baths and breathing exercises could fix this, you'd already be back to your radiant self. You need the right map. Let's find out which of the four somatic signatures your body is using. Girl, this isn't homework. This is a homecoming.
