Why You Cannot Get Started: Burnout, Dorsal Vagal Shutdown, and the Healer Who Stopped Feeling
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
If you’re a woman healer over 50 who feels stuck, unmotivated, or overwhelmed by even simple tasks… this episode will explain exactly what’s happening.
Because what looks like laziness… is actually nervous system shutdown.
Burnout and compassion fatigue don’t just make you tired.
They push your nervous system into survival states.
And one of the most misunderstood states is freeze—a biological shutdown response that mimics procrastination, avoidance, and lack of motivation.
This is why:
- You can’t “just get started”
- Small tasks feel overwhelming
- You feel numb, foggy, or disconnected
- Rest doesn’t restore you
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- The difference between burnout and nervous system collapse
- Why high-achieving women healers over 50 experience freeze
- The biology of dorsal vagal shutdown (polyvagal theory)
- Why pushing harder makes things worse
- A simple, compassionate way to begin moving out of freeze
This explains exactly how you feel.
And more importantly—it shows you why.
This weekend, try this:
Name three things you’re avoiding—without judgment.
Then say:
“This makes sense.”
That’s where healing begins.
If this episode resonated, send it to a woman healer who is overwhelmed, exhausted, or silently struggling.
People need to know this.
Stop trying to "Self-Care" your way out of a physiological crisis.
If bubble baths and deep breathing actually fixed compassion fatigue, you wouldn't still be staring at the ceiling at 2:00 AM. Your burnout isn't an attitude problem, it's a biological pattern. You are stuck in one of four distinct "somatic signatures." Until you identify yours, you are just throwing water on a grease fire.
Stop guessing. Find the leak. Fix the circuit.
Episodes drop every Tuesday at 5am and Friday at 5am.
This podcast is for women healers over 50 navigating burnout and compassion fatigue who want nervous-system-informed insight into exhaustion, purpose loss, polyvagal regulation, chakra healing, and embodied recovery so they can move from survival into clarity, stability, and restoration.
Okay. If everything feels like too much, even the smallest things, you're not lazy, you're in freeze. Empowering brilliant women in healthcare over 50 to transform burnout and compassion fatigue into renewed passion. Reigniting your spark to create a life that energizes you every single day. I'm your host, Dr. Jules. Let's get to it. Okay. Hey sweet soul. This is your Friday reset and I want to start by saying something clearly, directly, and with no apology. You sweet soul are not lazy. You are not unmotivated. You are not losing your edge. You are most likely in a nervous system state called freeze. Um, PO Hayes officially calls this the dorsal vagal. Freeze. And it is, uh, one of the most primitive states to be in. And I was stuck there for a number of years, and it sucks. I was so numb. I, I oh, oh, it was awful. But I need you to know, once you understand this, everything should start to make sense because of what you're feeling right now. That heaviness. That avoidance that, oh my God, it's just too big to even deal with that sense that even the simple things feel overwhelming is not a character flaw. Don't we wanna own that and cuss ourselves? It is biology. So let's talk about what's really happening. See when your nervous system has been under chronic stress, compassion, fatigue, burnout, emotional labor over functioning, your body cycles through survival states. First you try to push through. Oh, I hate it when I'm there. I was trying to do that last week and I caught myself. That's what. That's what's encouraging y'all we're there's nothing to fix here. There's just an awareness to be garnered so that when you catch yourself doing it, there's a plan B you can go to, but your body cycles through survival states. The first, as I said, is that push through. That's your sympathetic state fight flight overdrive. Hmm. That's where you've likely lived for years. You're over 50. You're an overachiever, you're a healer. You've been pushing since grad school, most likely. But eventually y'all, our systems hit a threshold and when it can't sustain that level of activation anymore, it doesn't go back to calm. It drops into freeze, freeze. My friend is not rest. Freeze is shut down. It's when your beautiful nervous system whose only job is to protect you says, girl, we cannot keep going like this. So we're going to conserve energy at all costs and from the outside. Well, from the outside, this looks like procrastination, maybe avoidance, lack of motivation, disconnection on the inside. Oh, it feels like everything is too much. Even small tasks feel overwhelming. And you know you want to do things, but you can't access the energy. You feel stuck, you feel numb. You are in a complete brain fog. And again, girl, this isn't laziness. This is your nervous system trying its best to survive when we have been over-functioning, swallowing our truth. Taking care of everyone but ourselves for years. So why do high achieving women hit the freeze? Let's talk about that for a hot minute, and I think here's the part that matters for you for. As a female healer, a woman healer over 50. And when I say healer, you might be an educator, you might be a doctor, you might be a therapist, you might be a nurse, you might be a massage therapist. Healers a coach. They come on a lot of flavors, but here's what we share. You didn't get to this state in your nervous system overnight. You got here by being the responsible one. The capable one, the one who holds everything together. You've spent years, decades living in overdrive, taking care of others, managing emotions, caring, the invisible weight in your nervous system. It adapted brilliantly until it couldn't anymore. Because Julie, right here, Julie, go back and, and take out this noise, and your nervous system adapted brilliantly until it couldn't anymore, because eventually over-functioning leads to complete collapse, not because we're weak, because your body has limits. And freeze is what happens when those limits are crossed for far too long. So if you're sitting there thinking, why can't I just get it together? I want you to hear me clearly, your system is not failing you. You have nothing to get together. Your system is protecting you and sending you a big signal. We have seen. This clearly in nervous system research and polyvagal theory. When stress becomes chronic and unresolved, the body shifts into what is called dorsal vagal shutdown. This is the conservation state. Heart rate lowers energy drops, motivation disappears, and it's not because you don't care. It is because your system is trying to keep you alive. This is why you can't push through anymore. Oh, sweet soul. You just can't. Productivity strategies stop working. Rest does not feel restorative because this is not a mindset issue. It is a physiological state. So I've got something for you for this weekend. We're not fixing this. We're not pushing, we're not forcing motivation. We're not doing something radically different. We're building awareness without judgment. Please replace judgment with curiosity. Be aware and curious. So here's the practice. I want you to gently name three things you're avoiding right now. Say your name, Julie. Here's the things I'm avoiding. That's it. No fixing, no pressure, no timeline, just awareness. And as you name them, I want you to say, this makes sense because avoidance and freeze is not failure. It's information. It's your system saying, I don't have capacity for this right now. And that awareness. That's the first step out of shutdown, not action, not productivity awareness. So here's what I want you to take with you. You're not lazy, you're not broken. You sweet soul are not behind. You are in a nervous system state that requires compassion, not criticism, because the truth is. You didn't get here because you didn't try hard enough. You got here because you tried too hard for too long. So this isn't something you push through. This is something you come home to and sweet soul, welcome to your homecoming. Sweet soul. Give yourself what you actually need. Tap the show notes right now to discover your somatic signature, because if bubble baths and breathing exercises could fix this, you'd already be back to your radiant self. You need the right map. Let's find out which of the four somatic signatures your body is using. Girl, this isn't homework. This is a homecoming.
