Dr. Joe Sheppard of Sheppard Chiropractic discusses something simple, powerful, and maybe a little provocative: Chiropractic works like gravity, whether you believe it or not. Now, I know that it might ruffle a few feathers. But stick with me. Let me start with a question. Do you believe in gravity? Of course you do.

But here’s the real question: If someone doesn’t believe in gravity… does it stop working? If you step off a roof and say, “I just don’t believe in gravity,” are you going to float? No. Gravity doesn’t require your belief. It requires your participation. It is a law. And chiropractic, real chiropractic, works the same way.

Hello everyone, my name is Dr. Joe Shepherd from Shepherd Chiropractic. Today on Dr. Joe's podcast, episode number 31, I want to talk about something very simple, powerful, and maybe a little provocative. Chiropractic works like gravity, whether you believe it or not. Now I know it might ruffle a few feathers, but stick with me. Let me start with a question. Do you believe in gravity? Of course you do. But here's the real question. If someone doesn't believe in gravity, does it stop working? If you step off a roof and say, I don't believe in gravity, are you going to float? No. Gravity doesn't require your belief. It requires your participation. It's a law. In chiropractic, real chiropractic works the same way. So let's take a deep breath, maybe roll those shoulders back, and let's get aligned together. The law of the body, okay? The law, this law states that your body is governed by laws, not opinions, not trends, not politics or social media, but laws. Your heart beats without you thinking about it. Your lungs breathe while you sleep. Your food digests automatically. Your cells replace themselves constantly. There is an intelligence inside you coordinating all of it. In chiropractic, we call this innate intelligence, the inborn wisdom of the body. And here's the key that intelligence flows through your brain, down your spinal cord, through the nerves, to every gland, organ, tissue, and cell of your body. It's not phys physiology, it's anatomy. If there's an interference in the system, if the spine is misaligned, irritating, or compressing nerves, your body cannot function at 100%. It's called a subluxation. Now here's where gravity comes in. Gravity is always working on you. Gravity is constant. It pushes down on every you, every single second of every day. It compresses your spine, it lowers your joints. It influences your posture. If your spine is aligned properly, your body handles gravity efficiently. If it is not, you start breaking down, disdegenerate, joints wear unevenly, muscles tighten and stiffen, nerves get irritated. You don't have to believe it for that to happen to your body. It just happens. Chiropractic helps your body adapt to gravity the way it was designed to. But I don't feel like anything's wrong, people say. Here's something I hear all the time. I feel fine. I feel good. That's like saying, I don't feel gravity today. You may not feel it, but it's shaping you all the time. Most people don't feel spinal decay, but it's happening. They don't feel disc degeneration in the early stages. They don't feel nerve interference immediately. Pain is often the last symptom to show up, not the first. If you drop a bowling ball on your foot, you're going to feel that baby, absolutely. But if you sit with poor posture, stress on your spine for years, and this slowly compresses your nervous system. That takes time. You know, and gravity works slowly and constantly. So does spinal decay. You know, chiropractic works to restore the alignment before the damage becomes obvious. You know, belief versus a law. You know, you don't believe in gravity to make it work. You respect it. You work with it. You don't jump off buildings, you don't test it, you build structures designed around it. Chiropractic is the same thing. We're not asking people to believe in chiropractic. What we're asking them is to understand how the body actually works. If your spine protects your nervous system and your nervous system controls your entire body, then protecting your spine makes sense. You know, whether you believe that or not. Absolutely. Chiropractic isn't magic. You know, let's talk about what an adjustment really is. It's not magic, it's not faith healing, it's not cracking bones randomly. It's a very specific controlled force applied to a specific joint or vertebra that isn't moving properly. Why? You know, motion equals life. When a joint stops moving properly, the surrounding tissues inflame, the muscles tighten, the nerve signals become distorted, an adjustment restores the motion. When the motion is restored, the body can heal itself better. That's physics, that's neurology, and that's biomechanics at the same time. It doesn't require a belief. It requires structure and function. You know, think about this. If you kink a garden hose, what happens to the water flow? It gets reduced. If you remove the kink, what happens? The water flows normally again. The hose doesn't need to believe in unkinking, it just responds to this change in the structure. Your nervous system works the same way. Interference reduces efficiency. Correction restores flow. Why some people don't believe in chiropractic? You know, that's very common. Sometimes when people say they don't believe in chiropractic, what they really mean is, you know, they've they've never experienced it before. Or they maybe had a bad experience with chiropractors. They misunderstand what it's all about. Or they've been taught to fear chiropractic. But truth but the truth isn't threatened by skepticism. If someone doubts gravity, gravity doesn't panic. Chiropractic doesn't need hype. It just needs understanding. You know, healing is not opinion-based. You know, that's a very important point. Your body heals based on physiology, not opinion. If you cut your finger, it heals. If you break a bone and it's aligned properly, it will heal. If you sleep well, your body recovers. If you eat junk food, your body struggles to function properly. These are cause and effects relationships. And spinal alignment and nerve function follow the same principle. When your spine is clear and aligned, the nervous system communicates better. When communication improves, function improves at the same time. When function improves, healing improves. Not because you believe hard enough, but because you remove the interference in the nervous system. You know, gravity as a daily reminder, you know, gravity is constantly pushing downward on you. Chiropractic is an upward correction. Every day gravity compresses you, every day stress compresses you. You know, sometimes every day life just pushes you down. And every adjustment helps lift that pressure off your nervous system. That's why consistent and regular chiropractic care matters. You don't escape gravity after a good day of posture, and you don't permanently overcome spinal stress after one adjustment. Health is maintenance. Just like brushing your teeth, working out, and eating good, healthy foods. You know, what's the bigger perspective here? You know, chiropractic is not about pain relief. Pain relief is a side effect. Chiropractic is about maximizing the expression of life through your nervous system. If gravity didn't exist, your muscles would atrophy, your bones would weaken, and your body would lose its structure. Resistance is what builds strength, but resistance requires adaptation. Chiropractic helps your body adapt to the forces of life, like gravity, stress, work, exercise, injuries, emotional strain. It keeps the communication system clear so your body can handle what it's designed to handle. Okay, here's my final thoughts. You know, if someone doesn't believe in gravity, they may argue about it. But if they step off a roof, reality settles the debate rather quickly. I'm not suggesting anything dramatic like that for chiropractic, but what I am saying is this your spine and nervous system are operating under laws of nature. You can ignore them, you can debate them, you can misunderstand them also, but they are still there all the time. And when you respect the design of your body, the incredible things can happen. Energy improves, sleep improves, focus improves, and healing improves. Not because chiropractic is a belief system, but because it aligns with how your body was designed to function. So here's my encouragement today. Don't approach your health based on belief. Approach it as a principle. Understand how your body works, respect the laws that govern it. Take care of the structure that protects your nervous system. Because chiropractic works like gravity, whether you believe it or not. There you go. With that in mind, I look forward to speaking with you on our next visit. I truly appreciate you taking the time to listen to me on your busy home, school, and work schedule. And I've always said it's easier to build a child's future than repair an adult. Have a great week and thanks for listening.
