Dr. Joe Sheppard from Sheppard Chiropractic discusses the a simple but powerful principle in chiropractic: Every organ in your body is connected to the one under your head. Now that might sound almost too obvious at first. Of course, your organs are connected to your brain, right? But I want you to really sit with that idea today. Because if you truly understand it, if you truly apply it, it changes the way you think about health, healing, and chiropractic care.
In the time it takes you to get home, work, or play, Dr. Joe's podcast will inform and educate you on chiropractic, nutrition, and fitness, keeping you and your family up to date on current products, health tips, and optimized living with chiropractic care. And here's your host, Dr. Joe Shepherd.
SPEAKER_01Hello everyone. My name is Dr. Joe Shepard from Shepard Chiropractic. Today on Dr. Joe's podcast, episode number 32, we will talk about a simple but powerful principle in chiropractic. Every organ in your body is connected to the one under your head. Now, that might sound almost too obvious at first, but of course, your organs are connected to your brain, right? Yeah. But I want you to really sit with the idea today because if you truly understand it, if you truly apply it, it changes the way you think about health, healing, and chiropractic care. So let's take a deep breath, maybe roll those shoulders back and get aligned together. Okay. The organ under your head. Well, the organ under your head is your brain. Your brain is not just the thing that helps you think, remember, or solve math problems. It is the master control center of your entire body. Right now, as you're listening to this, your brain is controlling your heart rate, regulating your breathing, coordinating your digestion, monitoring your blood pressure, balancing hormones, directing your immune responses, and repairing your tissues. And you're not consciously doing any of that. You're not telling your heart to beat, you're not reminding your stomach to digest what you had for breakfast. You're not manually activating your immune system to fight off bacteria. Your brain is running the show and it is doing it flawlessly when the communication is clear. The communication highway, so what does the brain, how does the brain talk to the body? Well, to the spinal cord and the nerves. The brain sends signals down the spinal cord, and from there, nerves branch off between each vertebra and travel to every organ, tissue, and cell in the body. You know, your liver, lungs, intestines, your heart, they all get instructions. This communication system is constant, it never shuts off. And the communication is clear when your body adapts, regulates, and heals efficiently. And if the communication is altered or has dysfunction in it, this function can be altered. And that's where chiropractic comes in. You know, your spine is just more than just bones. Your spine isn't just a stack of bones on top of each other that keeps you upright. It's your protective housing for your spinal cord, the important communication cable in your body. You know, when the spine is moving properly and aligned properly, it protects that communication system. But when the spine shifts out of its optimal position, what chiropractors call a subluxation or misalignment, it can create interference in your nervous system. Now let me be clear, this isn't about bones dramatically going out of place or something extreme like that. It's very subtle and it's functional. It's about motion and nerve irritation. Think of it like this you know, a kink in your garden hose, maybe static in your phone line, or maybe a dimmer switch that was turned down. The signal still gets through, but not as clearly as it was before, and not as powerfully or efficiently. And if every organ depends on signals from the brain, that really matters. You know, this is about function and not symptoms. You know, one of the biggest misunderstandings about chiropractic is that it's only for back, neck pain, or headaches. But pain is only the small part of the nervous system. In fact, a small percentage of your nerves are responsible for pain sensation. That's about 5% of your nervous system. And the vast majority are regulating function. So you could have interference affecting your digestion, your sleep, energy levels, immune function, and hormone balance without even feeling any kind of pain. Symptoms are often the last sign that something is wrong. But by the time you feel pain and dysfunction may be developing for months or maybe even years. And that's why chiropractic is not just about getting you out of pain, it's about optimizing the function of your body. You know, my biggest question is, let me ask you something. If every organ in your body depends on the signals from your brain, and if your spine protects the communication pathway, what if spinal interference can alter that communication? Wouldn't it make sense to have your spine checked even if you're not a pain? We service our cars before they break down, or the boil light comes on. We go to the dentist before we lose a tooth or have a cavity. We change batteries and smoke detectors before there's a fire. But most people wait until they're in severe pain before they think about their spine. Health doesn't work that way. You know, above down, inside out, I know we mentioned that in previous podcasts. In chiropractic philosophy, we say the body works from above down and inside out. Health flows from the brain, down the spinal cord, out the nerves, and into every gland, organ, tissue of the body. You know, we don't put health into your body, we remove the interference so that health that's already can express itself fully. You know, your body is already self-healing and self-regulating and highly intelligent, but it can only perform at its best when the communication is fully clear and uninterrupted. Here's an example. Think about your phone for a second. If you're on a call and the signal drops to one bar, what happens? You start saying, you know, can you hear me? You're breaking up. Hello. The message is distorted. Now imagine what's happening inside your body. Not enough for the system to shut down completely, but enough to distort the signal. Over time, this distorted communication leads to altered function. And this will eventually lead to decreased adaptability. And eventually you're going to have those symptoms like the neck pain, back pain, or maybe headaches. Chiropractic aims to restore that signal strength, not by forcing the body to do something unnatural, but by allowing it to do whatever it was totally designed to do. You know, chiropractic doesn't treat your organs, that's important. Chiropractic does not treat your liver, lungs, stomach, or heart. We don't adjust your gallbladder or anything like that. We don't push on your pancreas to make it work better. What we do is we remove the interference in the nervous system so the brain can regulate those organs properly. We honor that innate design. If the brain is the master controller center, and it is, then protecting its communication system is one of the smartest health decisions you can make. Kids, adults, and seniors. Children's nervous systems are developing. Adults are under constant stress, and seniors are trying to adapt to years of wear and tear. Stress, whether it's chemical, physical, or emotional, or even technological, will affect your spine in many ways. Falls, poor posture, long hours of sitting, old injuries, and inflammation, all of it can contribute to spinal dysfunction. And over time, that dysfunction can affect that communication. That's why consistent chiropractic care isn't about crisis management. It's about maintaining clear communication for life. You know, your health is about being able to adapt. You know, true health is not the absence of symptoms, it's the ability to adapt to them. It all comes back to the nervous system. The better your brain communicates with your body, the better your body adapts to life. And life will always bring stress. The question is, are you pre-prepared to handle it? You know, okay, so let's put this all together. So let's circle back to that principle we said. Every organ in your body is connected to the one under your head. Your brain runs the show. Your spine protects the communication pathway and highway. Your nerves deliver the messages. If the message is clear, your body works better. If that message is distorted, function can suffer. And chiropractic care focuses on keeping that message clear. Not just when you hurt, not just when something feels wrong, but consistently so you can function at your highest level. You know, your body is incredibly intelligent. It knows how to heal, it knows how to regulate, it knows how to survive and thrive, but it needs clear communication. You know, protect that connection, clear the interference with chiropractic adjustments. Trust the design that you were born with. Because when the brain and body are communicating clearly, incredible things can happen. You know, with that in mind, I look forward to speaking with you on our next visit. I truly appreciate you taking the time to listen to me on your busy home, school, and work schedule. And I've always said it's easier to build a child's future than repair it at all.
