Dr. Joe Sheppard from Sheppard Chiropractic discusses one of the most important and foundational ideas in chiropractic philosophy. It’s a simple phrase, but it carries a powerful meaning. The phrase is: “Nature needs no help, just no interference.” Now, when people hear that for the first time, they sometimes wonder what that really means. Does it mean the body doesn’t need doctors? Does it mean we should never do anything for our health? Not exactly. What it means is that the body already has an incredible built-in ability to heal and regulate itself. The role of chiropractic is not to force the body to heal, but to remove the things that interfere with that natural healing process. So today we’re going to talk about what that means, why it matters, and how chiropractic fits into that idea.

My name is Dr. Joe Shepherd from Shepherd Chiropractic. Today on Dr. Joe's podcast, episode number 33, I want to talk about one of the most important and foundational ideas in chiropractic philosophy. It's a simple phrase, but it carries a very powerful meaning. The phrase is, nature needs no help, just no interference. Now when people hear this for the first time, they sometimes wonder what that really means. Does it mean the body doesn't need doctors? Does it mean we should never do anything for our health? Not exactly. What it means is that the body already has an incredible built-in ability to heal and regulate itself. The role of chiropractic is not to force the body to heal, but to remove the things that interfere with the natural healing process. So today we're going to talk about what that means, why it matters, and how chiropractic fits into that idea. So let's take a deep breath, roll those shoulders back, and let's get aligned together. Okay, so the intelligence of the body. So let's start with something we often take for granted. Your body is incredibly intelligent. Right now, you're listening to the podcast, your heart's beating, your lungs are breathing, your digestion is working, your immune system is monitoring for threats, cells are repairing tissue and replacing the old ones. And you're not even thinking about it at all. Your body is doing it automatically. In chiropractic philosophy, we often refer to this as the body's innate intelligence, a natural wisdom built into the human body that keeps everything functioning and balanced. Think about this example. If you cut your finger, you don't have to tell your body to heal itself. You don't consciously direct the blood clotting, the inflammation, the tissue repair, and the regeneration of new skin cells. Your body simply knows what to do. You know, that healing ability is already built inside of you. That's the first part of the statement. Nature needs no help. Your body already has all the systems in place to heal, adapt, and survive. So why do problems happen? Well, that's the next logical question. If the body is so intelligent and capable of healing itself, why do problems occur? Why do people deal with chronic pain, tension, fatigue, headaches, and other issues? According to chiropractic philosophy, a big part of that answer is interference in the nervous system. When the body's systems are uh are able to communicate and function properly, things tend to work very smoothly and properly. But when sometimes interference with that communication, the body may not function at its full potential. One of the most important systems in the communication process is your nervous system. Your nervous system is the body's communication system. And it's the master controller of the body. Your brain sends signals and messages down your spinal cord and out through your nerves to every gland, organ, tissue of your body. These signals control things like muscle movement, organ function, digestion, heartbeat, immune responses, hormones, healing processes, temperature regulation in your body. Everything depends on clear communication between your brain and your body. Now that's where the spine becomes extremely important. Your spinal cord is protected by the spine. And all the nerves that travel throughout the spine through your body exit between the vertebra. If those vertebrae lose their proper movement or alignment, they can create stress on the nerves. In chiropractic, we call this subluxation or misalignment. A subluxation is essentially a spinal joint or vertebra that isn't properly functioning and may interfere with the normal function of your nervous system. When that happens, the communication between the brain and the body becomes less efficient, almost like static on your phone line. What does chiropractic actually do? This brings us to the role of the chiropractic care. A common misconception is that chiropractors heal the body, but in reality, chiropractic care works a little differently than that. A chiropractor's job is to locate, detect, and correct areas of spinal dysfunction that may be interfering with the nervous system. This is done through a specific chiropractic adjustment. An adjustment restores the motion to the joint and spine that isn't moving correctly or locked up or maybe stoved up, people call it. When the motion improves and the pressure on the surrounding nerves are reduced, the nervous system can communicate more clearly. You know, when this communication improves, the body can return to doing what it already knows how to do: heal and regulate itself. So chiropractors aren't forcing the body to heal, they're simply removing the interference so the body can function the way it was designed. That's the second part of the principle. Just no interference, we say. This is a garden analogy. One of the easiest ways to understand this concept is by thinking about a garden. Imagine you plant a tomato seed. You can't force that seed to grow, you can't command it to sprout. You can't manually stretch the plant taller. Growth is already built into the seed. But what you can do is remove the things that prevent growth. You remove the weeds, you clear away the rocks, you provide water and adequate sunlight. Once the interference is gone, the plant grows naturally. The human body works in a very similar way. Chiropractic doesn't force healing, it removes the obstacles that prevent the body from functioning at its best. Sources of interference in modern life today. Well, now here's the reality. Modern life puts a lot of stress on our bodies. Think about the average day for most people. We sit at desks, we look at our phones all day, we drive long distances, we deal with physical stress and emotional stress at the same time. And over time, these stresses can affect the spine and nervous system. Some common sources of interference include, you know, poor posture, repetitive movements, sports injuries, car accidents, work injuries, long hours of sitting, stress and muscle tension. You know, these things can slowly create dysfunction in your spine and your joints. Sometimes it happens after like an injury itself, but more often it happens over time. That's why most people don't realize something until it's really wrong and all the symptoms of pain and headache start showing up later. You know, health is a lot more than symptoms or lack of symptoms. One of the most important things chiropractic teaches us is that symptoms are not always the first sign of the problem. You can have spinal dysfunction and nervous system interference way before the pain appears. As I've said, you know, 90% plus of your nervous system controls functions of the body. You know, around 5% of it only controls pain. So remember, pain's always the last thing that happens. So the goal is to maintain proper nervous system function so that your body can adapt and stay healthy. You know, it's like regular dental checkups or maintaining your car before something breaks. Prevention and maintenance can go a long way and save you a lot of money in the future. You need to trust the ultimate design of your body. You know, this principle, nature needs no help and no interference, reminds us to trust the design of the human body. Instead of always asking, how can I add something to fix this? Why don't we start asking, what might be interfering with my body's ability to function? Sometimes improving your health isn't about adding more treatments, more medications, or more complexity in your life. Sometimes it's about removing the obstacles that are standing in your way. You know, when your nervous system is clear and your spine moves properly, the body can often do remarkable things. Okay, my closing thoughts on today. So if there's one thing I hope you take from this episode is that your body is incredibly capable. It is constantly working to keep you healthy, balanced, and functioning at its best. Chiropractic care simply removes the interference in your nervous system so that you may prevent that process from happening. You know, we want you to be at your best at all times, you know, because at the end of the day, the principle still holds true. Nature needs no help, just no interference. You know, if you're in Cincinnati and you're curious about chiropractic care or want to get your spine checked, we love to help you at Shepherd Chiropractic, you know. So give us a call. With that in mind, I look forward to speaking with you on our next visit. I appreciate you taking the time to listen to me on your busy home, school, and work schedule.
