Dr. Joe Sheppard from Sheppard Chiropractic discusses something that might make you stop and think: why do some people take better care of their car than they do themselves? Think about it, you wouldn't dream of driving your car without oil, fuel, air in tires and regular maintenance tune ups, right? Yet, many of us ignore our bodies in ways we would never tolerate with a vehicle. Let's discuss what this happens, and what we can do about it.

Hello, my name is Dr. Joe Shepherd from Shepard Chiropractic. Today on Dr. Joe's podcast, episode number 35, I want to talk about something that might make you stop and think. Why do some people take better care of their automobiles than they do their own body or themselves? You know, think about it. You wouldn't dream of driving your new car without oil, good fuel, and regular maintenance, right? Yep. Well, many of us ignore our bodies in ways we would never tolerate with a vehicle. Let's dig into why that happens and what we can do about it. So let's take a deep breath, roll those shoulders back, and let's get aligned together. Okay, first, let us explore the comparison. Cars are machines, they're predictable. They have dashboards, warning lights, clear instructions for care. If you skip an oil change, your car's performance drops, and eventually something will break. That's immediate feedback. You know, our bodies, however, don't come with warning lights for misalignment, poor posture, or stress overload. Pain or chronic conditions often show up very slowly. That delay can trick people into thinking I'm fine, I don't need care at this point. And here's where the irony is, cars depreciate in value over time if we neglect them, but our bodies will depreciate also. Ignoring self-care doesn't just reduce performance, it can impact longevity, energy, mood, and overall quality of life. Yet somehow it's more socially acceptable to spend hundreds on premium gas than a regular chiropractic adjustment or maybe stretching or working out on a regular basis. So why do we neglect our bodies? Well, why do we do this? Why do we take better care of an inanimate object than our living, breathing bodies? One reason is visibility. When a car is broken, everyone sees it. When your body is misaligned or stressed out, it's invisible until the pain becomes impossible to ignore. Another reason is perser perceived replaceability. We know a car can be replaced. Our bodies not so much. Yet we often treat our bodies like they're disposable. You know, let's be honest. Some of it is habit and convenience. It's easier to schedule a car service than to commit to regular exercise, proper nutrition, or just a regular chiropractic adjustment. But the truth is nothing we invest in ourselves comes with a better return than our own health. Okay, this here's why chiropractic care will come into this picture. Just like a car needs alignment to run smoothly, our spines need proper alignment to function at its best also. Misalignments, or as we call them, subluxations, can affect everything. Nerve function, energy levels, organ performance, being tired, not feeling well in general, stiff and tight or even in pain, chiropractic adjustments are preventative. Most of them like oil changes, tire rotations, and tune-ups for your spine and nervous system. They don't just help with pain, they help your body perform at its best level. And the earlier you start, the better. Taking care of your body today prevents breakdowns tomorrow. It's easier to maintain your health than to restore it once it's lost. Just like you wouldn't wait for your car to stall before taking it for service, because then you gotta have a toad. Don't wait for pain to dictate your new self-care need. So, how do we start treating ourselves like the same care we do for our cars? Here's a couple simple steps. Schedule regular chiropractic checkups. Just like a car has maintenance schedules, your body benefits from consistent chiropractic adjustments, a regular uh physical checkup, and some spinal postural screenings. Listen to those warning signs. You know, your body communicates in very subtle ways. Fatigue, tension, stiffness, don't sleep well. Pay attention early before things escalate. Invest in daily maintenance. Hydration, sleep, posture, exercise, proper nutrition are everyday tune-ups, small investments compound over time for your health. If we adopt these habits, we'll notice better energy, less pain, and more resilience in daily life. And the beauty is these habits can start with no mechanical knowledge required. Okay, so to wrap this up, remember that your body is the most valuable machine you're ever going to own. Treat it like you would your car with respect, care, and regular maintenance tune-ups. If you invest in it today, it will take care of you tomorrow and for many, many years to come. So next time you you find yourself spending hours washing or repairing your car, ask yourself, am I giving my body the same attention? And remember, it's never too late to start. Okay, with that in mind, I look forward to speaking with you on our next visit. I appreciate you taking the time to listen to me on your busy home, school, and work schedule. And I've always said it's easier to build a child's future than repair an adult. Have a great week and thanks for listening.
