Dr. Joe Sheppard from Sheppard Chiropractic discusses the how chiropractic care can actually "wake up" your Brain. Now, I know what some of you might be thinking…“Doc, I thought chiropractic was just about back pain, neck pain, and maybe headaches.” And yes, we absolutely help with those things.

But if that’s all you think chiropractic does, you’re only seeing a small piece of a much bigger picture. Because every specific chiropractic adjustment isn’t really about the joints or the bones… it’s about the nervous system and your brain.

It’s about how your body processes, adapts, and responds to the world around you. And when that system is functioning at its highest level, everything else in your body has the opportunity to function better too.

My name is Dr. Joe Shepherd from Shepard Chiropractic. Today on Dr. Joe's podcast, episode number 36, I want to talk about something that sounds a little bold, but stick with me. How a spinal adjustment can actually wake up your brain. Now, I know that some of you might be thinking, Doc, I thought chiropractic was about back pain, neck pain, and sometimes headaches. And yes, we do help with those. But if that's all you think chiropractic does, you're only seeing a small piece of a much bigger picture. Because every adjustment you receive is not about the joints, it's about the nervous system in your brain and how your body processes and responds to the world around you. So today we're going to break it down into three big ideas: neuroplasticity, cortical processing, and sensory motor integration. And I'll explain those. So let's take a deep breath, roll those shoulders back, and let's get aligned together. Now let's talk about that waking up the brain thing. You know, your brain is constantly receiving information from your body. Every movement, every posture, every step you take, it's all feeding data back up to your brain through your nervous system. Now, here's the key: your spine is one of the biggest sources of that information. The joints in your spine are loaded with tiny sensors called proprioreceptors. These sensors tell your brain where the body is in space, how you're moving, how you're balancing, and how you're functioning. But when a joint in your spine isn't moving properly, what we call a subluxation or misalignment, those signals become distorted or altered. It's like static in your system. So instead of getting clear, accurate information, your brain is working off faulty input. And your brain is getting bad input. It's going to process less than optimal output also. That may show up as poor posture, decreased coordination, chronic tension or stiffness, even reduced adaptability to stress in life. So this is where the adjustment comes in. A precise chiropractic adjustment restores motion to that joint, and in doing so sends a burst of clean and accurate information back to the brain. That's what we mean when we say you can wake up your brain by an adjustment. Now, let's see, you know, let's talk about that neuroplasticity thing. It's a big word that simply means your body your brain's ability to adapt, change, and rewire itself. For some time, people believed the brain was always fixed and couldn't change. That once you reach adulthood, it was pretty much set in stone. We now know that that's not true at all. Your brain is constantly changing based on the input it receives. So think about this. If your spine has been restricted or misaligned or not moving well for months or maybe even years, your brain has been adapting to a faulty input. It's been building patterns around dysfunction. But when we introduce a chiropractic adjustment, we're essentially, essentially giving the brain new information to process, better information. And with repeated, consistent adjustments, we can help guide the brain towards a healthier pattern overall. That's the neuroplastic change. And it's not magic, it's just neurology. And that's why people often say things like, I feel clearer after an adjustment. I'm moving better. I just feel more connected. I don't have that brain fog like you used to. That's your brain adapting in real time. Okay. Now, let's talk about the cortical processing. Now, the cortex is the outer layer of the brain. It's responsible for higher level functions like movement control, awareness, decision making, and attention. When your brain is getting clean, accurate input from your spine, your cortex or brain can process information much more efficiently. But when that input is distorted, your brain has to work harder to interpret what's going on at that moment. It's like trying to have a conversation in a noisy room. You know, you can do it, but it takes a lot more effort and focus, and you're more likely to misinterpret things. Research has shown that spinal adjustments can actually influence the activity in the brain, particularly in areas responsible for movement and coordination. You know what? In other words, adjustments just don't change how you feel. They change how your brain is functioning. And you know, that's a pretty darn big deal because better cortical processing means you're you have more efficient movement, you're better focused, you improve body awareness, and ultimately a more adaptive and healthier nervous system. Now let's tie it all together with that sensory motor integration. This is how your brain takes sensory input, like touch, movement, heat, and position, and turns it into a coordinated action. It's how you walk without thinking, catch a ball, maintain balance, even sit upright without slouching. All of this happens through seamless communication between your brain and your body. But again, if the input is off, the output will be two. When your spinal joints aren't moving properly, it disrupts that communication loop. And over time, that can lead to compensation patterns, reduced coordination, increased stress and strain on the muscles and joints. You know, a chiropractic adjustment helps restore that loop. It improves the quality of the information going into your brain, which improves how the brain organizes the movement coming back down to all your glands, organs, and tissues. That's a sensory motor integration in action. Now, here's where this really matters because isn't this isn't about a theory. It's about what I see in practice every day here in Cincinnati. People come in thinking they just have back pain or neck stiffness or headaches or maybe sciatica. But as they get adjusted regularly, they start noticing things they didn't expect. They'll say things like, I'm sleeping better, I feel more balanced, I'm not as stressed as I used to be, and I have some movement mobility like I haven't had in years. That's not random. That's their nervous system functioning better. That's the brain getting better information and making better decisions for your body, also. So when we say an adjustment can wake up your brain, what we really mean is we're improving the quality of communication between your brain and your spine. We're reducing the interference in your nervous system. We're giving your brain the tools it needs to adapt, heal, and function at a much higher level. You know, your body is just incredibly intelligent. It it doesn't need help. It just needs no interference. Okay, so if you've never explained chiropractic care or have been, haven't been for a while, this is something I think you need to think about. It's not about just cracking bones or joints, it's about optimizing your nervous system and helping your brain do what it was truly designed to do. If you're here in Cincinnati, we'd love to help you experience that for yourself at Shepherd Chiropractic. You know, with that in mind, I look forward to speaking with you on our next visit. I appreciate you taking the time to listen to me with your busy home, school, and work schedule. And I have always said, it's easier to build a child's future than repair an adult. Have a great week and thanks for listening, Dr. Joe.
