SPEAKER_01Hello everyone. My name is Dr. Joe Shepherd from Shepherd Chiropractic. Today on Dr. Joe's Power On Podcast, episode number 39, I want to talk about a topic that affects every single one of us. Whether you're working at a desk, driving, scrolling on your phone, or even just relaxing at your house. We're talking about ergonomics, what it is, why it matters, and how it directly impacts your spinal health. Now, I know ergonomics might sound like one of those corporate buzzwords you hear during the workplace trainings, but here's the truth. Your daily environment is either supporting your spine or slowly breaking it down. So let's take a deep breath, maybe roll those shoulders back and let's get aligned together. So what exactly is ergonomics? Ergonomics is simply the science of designing your environment to fit your body instead of forcing your body to adapt to a poorly designed environment. Think about that for a second. Your body was not designed to hunch over a laptop for eight hours a day. It wasn't designed to look down at a phone for hours. And it definitely wasn't designed to sit in a slouched position in a car or on a couch all day. But that's exactly what most people do. And over time, these small repeated stresses begin to add up. You know, your spine under stress. Well, let's talk about what's happening to your spine and what ergonomics are actually going. Okay, the spine is designed with three natural curves. Curve in the neck called lordotic, curve in your mid back called kyphotic, and curve in your lower back called lordotic also. These curves help distribute stress, absorb shock, and allow your nervous system to function at a best level. But when your posture breaks down, when your ergonomics are poor, these curves start to change. For example, forward head posture from looking at a screen puts extra stress on your neck. Rounded shoulders compress your upper back. Slouched sitting position flattens the lower back and strains the discs. Here's a very powerful visual. For every inch your head moves forward, it adds about 10 extra pounds of stress on your neck. Yeah, that's a lot. So if your head is two, three inches forward, which is very common for people, that's like your neck carrying an extra 20 to 30 pounds all day. No wonder people are dealing with headaches, neck pain, stiffness, tingling down the arms. Okay? So the domino effect on your health, and that's where it's even more important. It just isn't about pain. Your spine protects your nervous system, the system that controls everything in your body. When your posture and ergonomics are off, it can create tension in the muscles, lead to joint restrictions, interfere with the nerve communication. And what these do is they show up as headaches, fatigue, poor sleep, reduced mobility, decreased focus, to name a few. So when we talk about ergonomics, we're not talking about comfort, we're talking about function and your health. Okay, the tech's neck epidemic. Let's talk about something we see more and more in the office called tech neck. This comes from constantly looking down at your phones, tablets, and your laptops. You will see tight neck muscles, stiff upper back, headaches, tingling or numbness in your arms in the more advanced cases. And here's where the scary part is. It's not just in adults anymore. We're seeing it in kids and teenagers. And here's why. Because they're spending hours a day on devices with zero regard for posture. This is where ergonomics should start early. If we don't address it, we'll be setting up long-term spinal issues down the road. Okay, so let's break down the workplace ergonomics. Let's be practical. If you're sitting at a desk for most of the day, your setup matters more than you think. Here are a few key things to look at. Screen height. Your screen should be at eye level. And if you're constantly looking down, you're putting stress on your neck. Chair support. You want a chair that supports the natural curve of the lower back. If not, you're ending up being slouched. Feet position. Feet should be flat on the floor, not tucked under, not dangling, or not crossed. The keyboard mouse position, your elbows should be about a 90 degree angle, close to your body. Movement. Okay, this one's huge. Your body is not meant to stay in one position for hours. Even with perfect ergonomics, you still need to move. And I tell patients all the time, the best posture is your next posture. Ergonomics at your house? Well, yeah. Let's not forget. We need to talk about that also. Poor ergonomics don't stop when you just leave work. Think about how you slit on sit on the couch. Are you slouched? Are you twisted to one side? Looking down at your phone while you're you're you're on the couch. What about sleep setup? Your pillow and mattress play a huge role in spinal alignment. A good rule of thumb, your neck should stay in a neutral position, not cranked forward and not tilted too far back. If you wake up stiff and sore, your sleek sleep ergonomics might be off also. Small changes, big impact. Here's the good news. You don't need a complete life overhaul to make improvements. Small changes can make a very big difference. Try this. Raise your screen, sit all the way back in your chair, take breaks every 20 to 30 minutes. Stand up, walk around, stretch. Stretch your neck and posture and your shoulders. And be mindful of your posture when using your phone. Look at your phone in front of you, not down. These are simple but consistently, and consistency is the key for this. So where does chiropractic care come in? Now, even with great ergonomics, life still happens. That's where chiropractic care comes in. As a chiropractor, my goal is to restore proper movement of the spine, reduce tension and stress on the nervous system, and help your body function the way it was actually designed to. Adjustments help reset the system. But here's the truth if you're not getting adjusted and then going back to poor posture and ergonomics all day, you're just fighting an uphill battle. So you gotta change, not only by getting adjusted, but also changing the ergonomics at home and at work. So that's why we always combine adjustments with awareness and better habits. Okay? Think long-term, you know, ergonomics isn't about just today, it's about the future. The habits you build now will determine how your spine feels ten years from now, twenty years from now, thirty years from now. Do you want to be dealing with chronic pain and stiffness? Or do you want to stay mobile, active, and healthy the rest of your life? It starts with the small things that you do every single day. You know, your environment matters, your posture matters, and your daily habits matter. And urban ergonomics isn't complicated, but it can be very powerful. If you start paying attention to how you sit, stand, and move throughout the day, you can make a huge impact on your spinal health and overall well-being. You know, if you're in the Cincinnati area and dealing with discomfort, poor posture, or just want to function at a higher level, we love to see you at Shepherd Chiropractic. You know, thanks for tuning in today. If you found this helpful, share it with someone who spends a little bit too much time hunched over their phone. With that in mind, I look forward to speaking with you on our next visit. I appreciate you taking the time to listen to me on your busy home, school, and work schedule.
