Dr. Joe’s Power On Podcast from Sheppard Chiropractic, Episode 43.

This episode explains whiplash as more than just simple neck pain, highlighting how it can affect the entire body and nervous system.

Dr. Joe Sheppard describes whiplash as an acceleration-deceleration injury where the head is rapidly thrown forward and backward, straining the neck, muscles, ligaments, joints, and nerves. It commonly occurs in car accidents but can also result from sports, falls, or sudden impacts—even at low speeds.

He explains that symptoms don’t always appear immediately due to adrenaline masking pain. Common delayed symptoms include neck stiffness, headaches, shoulder and upper back tension, dizziness, fatigue, and even brain fog or concentration issues.

The episode emphasizes that whiplash affects more than just the neck, often creating compensation patterns throughout the spine and nervous system. These can lead to reduced mobility, posture changes, muscle imbalance, and ongoing discomfort if not addressed.

From a chiropractic perspective, Dr. Joe focuses on restoring proper movement, reducing muscle tension, improving posture, and supporting nervous system function through adjustments, soft tissue work, and corrective exercises.

He warns against “toughing it out,” explaining that untreated whiplash can lead to chronic issues if compensation patterns persist. Early evaluation and consistent care are encouraged.

Overall, the message is that whiplash is a whole-body injury that requires proper attention and care to ensure full recovery and long-term spinal health.

Hello everyone. My name is Dr. Joe Shepherd, Shepard Chiropractic. Today on Dr. Joe's Power On Podcast, episode number 43, we're talking about something that a lot of people have heard of, but very few people fully understand, and it's whiplash. Now, when most people hear the word whiplash, they immediately think, oh, that's just something you get after a car accident. Or they think, yeah, my neck was sore for a couple days and then I was fine. But the truth is, whiplash can affect much more than just your neck. It can impact your posture, your mobility, muscle function, headaches, sleep, concentration, attitude, and even how your nervous system functions overall. Today I want to break it down what whiplash actually is, why symptoms can linger, why some people feel symptoms immediately, why others don't, and how chiropractic care approaches these injuries from a structural and neurological standpoint. So whether you have personally dealt with whiplash before, you know someone who has, or you just want to understand how these injuries affect the body, this episode is for you. So let's take a deep breath, maybe roll those shoulders back, and let's get aligned together. So what is whiplash? So first things first. What exactly is whiplash? Well, it's an acceleration and deceleration injury. Basically, the head is thrown backward and forward rapidly, faster than the muscles and the ligaments can properly stabilize. Think about how heavy your head is. The average head's around 10 to 12 pounds. Now imagine that weight suddenly being launched in multiple directions within fractions of a second. That creates a tremendous amount of force through the cervical spine, the muscles, the ligaments, discs, joints, and the surrounding nerves. Most commonly we see this in rear end collisions, but whiplash can also happen from sports injuries, falls, roller coasters, physical trauma, and sudden slips or jolts. And here's something many people don't realize. You do not have to be in a major accident to experience whiplash. I've seen people develop significant symptoms after low speed collisions where the vehicle damage looked minor. Why? Why is that? Well, because your spine doesn't care how expensive the car repair is. Your body responds to the force, the acceleration, the deceleration, and the motion changes that occur. Why symptoms don't always show up immediately? Well, one of the biggest misconceptions about whiplash is that the idea that if you feel okay right after the accident, then you're completely fine. That's not true. Adrenaline is very powerful. Immediately after an accident, your body goes into survival mode. Adrenaline and stress hormones can temporarily mass pain, spasm, and inflammation. That's why a lot of people say I felt okay at first, but the next day I could barely move. And honestly, that's incredibly common. Inflammation takes time, muscle spasms take time, and joint irritation takes time also. Sometimes symptoms don't fully appear for hours, days, occasionally even weeks. That delayed response is one reason these injuries can become chronic if they are ignored early on. Now, common whiplash symptoms. Now let's talk about symptoms because whiplash is often much more than just neck pain. Sure, neck stiffness is pretty common, but many patients experience a whole list of issues they don't even realize are connected to the injury. Some of the most common symptoms include neck pain and stiffness, and this one is usually pretty pretty obvious. People feel tightness, soreness, they just can't move their neck like they used to. They'll say, I can't turn my head. It hurts when I'm looking over my shoulder. Can't lay flat because sleeping is very uncomfortable. Okay, headaches. Whiplash headaches are very common. These muscles at the base of your skull tighten and become irritated, often referring pain up into your head. Shoulder and upper back tension. Remember that the body works as a chain. When the neck gets injured, the shoulders and upper back often try to compensate for this. Sometimes there's dizziness and balance issues also. Your neck usually plays a major role in your balance and spatial awareness, even though you don't think about it. When these joints and muscles become dysfunctional, it can affect how your brain interprets where you are, certain positions and movements also. Fatigue, you know, people are often surprised by this one. Healing takes energy. Inflammation takes energy. Constant muscle guarding takes energy also. And your body is essentially fighting to stabilize itself. Brain fog and concentration. You know, that's very common, I see. And this is another symptom. People don't connect with whiplash. When the neck is injured and the nervous system becomes irritated, people report trouble focusing, mental bef mental fatigue. I just feel off, brain fog, and difficulty concentrating. Now, obviously, every case is different, but these symptoms are more common than many people realize. Okay, the chiropractic perspective. So let's talk about it from a chiropractic standpoint. At Shepherd Chiropractic, we don't just ask where does it hurt? We ask how your body's moving, what areas are restricted? How is your nervous system adapting to the injury? What compensation patterns are you starting to develop? Because pain is office often the last thing to show up and the first thing to leave. You can still have dysfunction long after your symptoms improve. After a whiplash injury, we common see reduced range of motion, muscle imbalance, altered posture mechanics, increased tension, muscle guarding, and just loss of normal spinal movements. And when your joints stop moving correctly, the body compensates somewhere else. Maybe your shoulders are tighter. Maybe your posture collapses forward and you develop that forward head posture. Maybe the headaches start occurring more often. The body is incredibly adaptive, but compensation isn't always healthy in long term. How can chiropractic care can help? Well, the goal is not simply to taste your symptoms, but the goal is to restore proper movement and back to normal nerve function. And you know, this is involving chiropractic adjustments, which improve mobility to the restricted spinal joints, get the nerves and the nervous system working at a better level, and reduce the abnormal mechanical stress that's on the body. Soft tissue work is important. These muscles are very tight and become very guarded at the same time. And addressing these issues can improve movement patterns like through massage, postural correction. After that injury, posture often changes dramatically, but you don't really notice it. People start protecting areas subconsciously because it hurts on the right, they start leaning over to the left. They sit differently, they move differently. And over time, these patterns can develop into additional stresses on other parts of the body. Mobility and rehabilitation exercises, well, movement does matter. The body heals better when it moves. Movement is energy, and targeted exercises help restore stability and coordination back in the muscles through a better working nervous system. One of the biggest chiropractic concepts is understanding that the spine and nervous system work together as a unit. Each movement becomes, when movement becomes dysfunctional, communication between the brain and the body is less efficient. Improving spinal mechanics may help support overall function. That's why that adjustment's so important. You know, people shouldn't just try to tough it out. And I think this is one of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to simply wait these injuries out without getting evaluated. And I understand why. People are busy, life continues, work continues. Kids still need to be picked up from school, but ignoring problems don't always make that disappear. You know, it's like that small drip. That drip becomes a big thing. Or when your tire is out of alignment and you just keep driving, well, that starts to wear that tire unevenly. Sometimes the body adapts in ways that create chronic tightness, recurring headaches, reduced mobility, long-term stiffness, and ongoing pain cycles where it hurts all the time. The longer the compensation patterns exist, the harder the time it will take to correct that problem. So don't wait. And that's why early evaluation can be so important. So here's some recovery tips. So if someone is recovering from a whiplash, what are some general things you should focus on? First, don't panic. Most people improve significantly with proper chiropractic care and consistent regular adjustments. Number two, movement is usually better than incomplete activity. Your body needs movement or it's going to tighten and stiffen up. Now, obviously, every case is different, and severe injuries require medical evaluation, but prolonged immobilization can sometimes make the stiffness much worse. Other important habits include paying attention to your posture, avoiding that excessive screen time with that forward head posture, looking forward on your on your phone or your tablet or computer, staying hydrated, proper nutrition, sleeping in a very supportive position, follow through with the recommended flexibility and stabilization exercises, and be consistent with the recommended chiropractic care. You know, healing is rarely about one magic treatment. It's usually about consistently over time. Okay, here's my closing thoughts. It's not always just a sore neck for a few days. These injuries can affect movement, posture, balance, headaches, nervous system function in ways many people don't initially realize. And at Shepherd Chiropractic here in Cincinnati, we work with patients to evaluate how auto injuries or other injuries may be affecting your spinal movement and overall nervous system function so you can move better, heal better, and function better for long term. So if you've been in an auto accident recently, experience neck pain, headache, stiffness, or just feel like your body hasn't been the same afterward, don't ignore it. Early evaluation truly matters.
