Hello, my name is Dr. Joe Shepherd, Shepard Chiropractic. Today we're talking on Dr. Joe's Power On Podcast, episode number 51, about one of the questions I hear countless times over the years. Patient comes into the office and says, You know, Dr. Joe, I have a question. If I keep getting adjusted, could my spine become too loose? Or maybe someone would say to them, Be careful, if you keep going to a chiropractor, you'll have to go forever because your spine gets too loose. Well, if you've ever wondered where that's true, today's episode is just for you. We're going to separate fact from fiction, explain what chiropractic adjustments actually do, and talk about what makes a spine stable, and hopefully leave you with a much better understanding of how your body works. So kick off your shoes, take a deep breath, maybe roll those shoulders back, and let's get aligned together. So, where does this myth come from? Well, I honestly don't know where the myth started, but it's been around for decades. I think part of the confusion comes from people hearing words like adjustment or manipulation, and imagine bones being forced around or ligaments getting stretched. Well, others may think they hear a popping sound during adjustment that something must have been loose or maybe becomes looser. Neither of those ideas accurately describe what happens during a chiropractic adjustment. In fact, the exact opposite is usually true. Most people come into our office because their spine isn't moving enough, not because it's moving too much. So how your spine is built. Well, let's take a quick anatomy lesson here. Your spine is an amazing piece of engineering. It contains 24 movable vertebrae, discs that act like cushions between the bones, strong ligaments that hold everything together, muscles that provide support in movement, and of course the spinal cord nerves that allow your brain to communicate with every part of your body. All of these structures work together to create something very important. A balance between stability and mobility. Your spine needs enough movement to allow you to bend, twist, reach, and enjoy your life. But it also needs enough stability to protect your spinal cord and support your body at the same time. Too much stiffness is a problem. Too much instability is also a problem. Healthy spines live somewhere in the middle. What does a chiropractic adjustment actually do? Well, let's talk about that. This is where the misunderstanding begins. A chiropractic adjustment is a precise movement delivered to a joint that isn't functioning properly. Notice what I say. I didn't say we move bones all over the place. I didn't say we loosen your entire spine. I say we're addressing joints or vertebrae that have become restricted. Think about a rusty door hinge. If a hinge hasn't moved well in years, you wouldn't replace the entire door. You would simply restore movement to the hinge. Now imagine putting a few drops of oil on that hinge. The hinge moves the way it was designed to move again. But did you make the hinge loose? No. You restored normal function or motion to the joy. That's exactly how I often explain chiropractic adjustments to patients. We're helping joints move more normally, not excessively. So what about that popping sound? Well, I've talked about that. That's one of everyone's favorite topic is the popping and cracking sound. Many people believe the pop means the bone went back into place. Actually, that's not what you're hearing. That sound is simply gas being released from the joint as pressure changes inside the joint capsule. It's very similar to cracking your knuckles. Some adjustments make noise and some don't. The sound itself isn't the treatment. The restored movement is what matters and the improvement in the nerve system function. So don't judge the quality of an adjustment by how loud it was or wasn't. Sometimes the quietest adjustments are the most effective. Can adjustments stretch ligaments? Here's one of the biggest concerns that people have. They imagine that every adjustment stretches the ligaments a little bit more, eventually the spine becomes unstable. Well, fortunately, that's not how ligaments work. Ligaments are incredibly tough connective tissues. They are designed to stabilize your joints, and the force required to permanently stretch or damage spinal ligaments is far greater than a carefully controlled force delivered through a specific chiropractic adjustment. A properly performed adjustment stays well within the normal range of motion of the joint. It's restoring movement, not creating abnormal movement. If chiropractic adjustments actually stretch ligaments every time someone was adjusted, we'd expect to see patients becoming increasingly stable over years. And that is simply not what happens. Why do I feel like I need another adjustment? Well, that's another good question people ask. Someone gets adjusted, they feel great. A few weeks later, they notice stiffness is returning and coming back. Then they wonder, did chiropractic make me dependent? Well, not at all. Think about getting your teeth cleaned. Does brushing and flossing make your teeth dependent on a dentist? No, of course not. Life keeps happening. Plaque builds up. You continue maintaining your oral health. Or think about exercise. If you stop exercising, your muscles don't stay strong forever. Don't blame the gym for that. You recognize that consistency matters. Your spine is no different. Poor posture, long hours at the desk, lifting children, yard work, stress, sports, sleeping in awkward positions, sitting in traffic for hours, these things all place different stresses on your body. And you know, life just keeps happening. Your spine continues responding to those stresses. So what actually causes an unstable spine? Well, real spinal instability is a true medical condition. It usually develops because of things like serious trauma, major ligament injuries, certain genetic connective tissue disorders, severe arthritis, previous spinal injury, or significant degeneration of the spine. Notice what's missing from the list, chiropractic adjustments. Adjustments don't create instability. They're intended to improve joint function. So the importance of strong muscles, well, it's something people really overlook a lot. Your muscles are your body's natural support system. Healthy core muscles, healthy back muscles, healthy hips, healthy posture, and upper back muscles. All these contribute to spinal stability. That's why chiropractic care often works best when combined with movement, stretching, strengthening, hydration, and just healthy habits. An adjustment isn't meant to replace exercise. It's meant to help your body move well enough to exercise comfortably. Movement is medicine. So what does the research say? Well, modern research continues to support chiropractic care as a safe option for many musculoskeletal conditions, especially neck pain, back pain, headaches, and certain joint problems. Serious complications are very rare. Even more importantly for today's discussion is there's no evidence that routine chiropractic care makes a healthy spine loose or unstable. In fact, restoring normal movement often helps people move more confidently and comfortably at the same time. So here is one more comparison that I like. Imagine your car. If your wheels are out of alignment, you don't say, well, I better never get them aligned because eventually my car will become aligned too much. That wouldn't make much sense at all, would it? You restore the alignment because that's where the vehicle functions best. Your spine is very similar to that. Our goal isn't to make it move more accessibly. Our goal is to help it function as it was designed. So how do you keep your health your spine healthy? Well, if you want a healthier spine, here's a few simple habits that can make a big difference. Stay physically active, strengthen your core, avoid sitting for hours without getting up. Lift properly. Stay hydrated. Sleep on a supportive mattress and good pillow. Pay attention to your posture and have your spine evaluated when something doesn't feel right. Your body is designed to move, and the more you help it move well, the better it will usually perform. So here's some closing thoughts. So let's answer today's question one final time. Can chiropractic adjustments make your spine too loose? And the answer is no. A properly performed specific chiropractic adjustment restores normal joint motion and proper nerve function. It doesn't weaken your ligaments, it doesn't create instability, it doesn't make you dependent. Instead, it helps your body move the way it was designed to move while supporting a healthy nervous system.
