Episode 130: Techniques for Finding Success and Positive Change with Mike Diamond

Courtney Andersen, the host of the Sober Vibes Podcast, is joined by Mike Diamond, an author, speaker, life coach, director, and interventionist. Mike discusses his sobriety story and his book, A Daily Dose of Positivity. He explains that he started using at twelve and was first drunk at four, nearly dying from alcohol poisoning. He got clean and sober for the first time when he was 19. Courtney encourages listeners to check out Mike's book and connect with her for sober coaching.

In this conversation, Mike recounts their journey with alcohol and drug addiction. He began drinking and using drugs when they were 19, and were sober for a few years before eventually relapsing. They attempted sobriety multiple times, but it wasn't until they were 30 that they finally had an epiphany that it was time to stop. He had achieved external success in life, but felt spiritually bankrupt.  Mike went on a bender with their friend Scott Weiland, and it was during this bender that he realized he needed to make a change. Through a lot of hard work and dedication, they finally achieved sobriety and have been sober ever since.

Mike recalls a moment 17 years ago when he was working with a vendor who was in the process of divorcing his wife, Mary. He had no children of his own, and in that moment of clarity, he realized the path he had been on: getting authentic and then making disempowering choices. He knew he had to make a change, so he called a friend who was 15 years sober and committed to attending three meetings a day to stay sober. Mike ultimately lived a sober life for 10 years before his friend Scott passed away, and he now mentors Scott's son.

Mike and Courtney discussed Mike's journey of self-reflection and how it ultimately led him to realize that he was full of shit. He recounts how he was an arrogant, talented, and self-sabotaging kid from Perth who thought he had to do all these things to be authentic but came to understand that all that matters is himself. He took responsibility for his life and his choices and also acknowledged the role that his environment and genetics have in his life. He also shared an example of how he got into acting as a kid and how his lack of love and encouragement led him to use drinking and drugs as a coping mechanism. Ultimately, he encourages other people to take responsibility for their lives and remember that their talents are meant to be given away.

HIGHLIGHTS

No, as a dear friend of mine came on, as one of the producers, I've been god in La. Doing being one of the guys in La. One of the top guys in La. For a long time now, but it came out of nowhere, and I just was like, if I can be of service and it's like an honor to be asked to kind of help people, it blew me away. It was a very incredible I'm very grateful. Very grateful.

All these people like that. That was the reality show I originally did. It was like, let's see this be a train, work and die. But no one was going to intervene and help me. Someone should have said, hey, dude, those eight balls of cocaine and shit you doing, you're going to die. They just was like, this is great TV. So it's actually like it makes me look when I watch my wife and watch these housewives. And it's more of like, wow. Like, you see the guy, Andy Cohen, and it's no judgment, but all they do is scream at each other all day. There's no healing, there's no help. And I'm like, but these poor people are getting exploited this way.

It's all legit. Same thing. The most incredible it was very interesting watching it myself. It's hard to move me and the stories. It's so educational and it's so brilliant. And you know what's interesting and so funny? I remember someone making a comment about this show before I was even thinking of be on it. And I watched an episode, and I was really moved. I was like, wow, and I was like, Wait a second. So you want to see a bunch of housewives beat each other up?

You've got to learn to breathe diaphragmatic all the time. That's the human experience that most people, oh, well, when do I stop it? Doesn't it's work? That has no end. You just keep doing it. And once you do it, there's no time. See, there's no past and future. There's me with you in a moment. And that's the simplicity that Buddha talked about, that Christ talked about, the Socrates talked about. Whatever the look, we're just repeating the same shit, the same that people don't get it.

So if I can't bring value, it's not what I leave you, it's what I leave in you that matters. And it's not about money. It's how I educate you to be a better person and how I inspire you so you can take action and how I encourage you so you find your potential. What about money? Then you then can learn to acquire the skill to bring values to other people, and then you're good. But we don't live in that world. We try to hide the information.
