Ep 103 God gave us a dryer

Hello there. I hope you're having a great day. My name is Heidi Bradford, and I am a life coach, a mom of five, a military spouse, and a PMDD survivor. I didn't actually get a podcast out last [00:01:00] week. I'm a fairly religious podcaster at once a week, but every once in a while I miss, and usually I don't even tell you. Usually I just move on. But I had the idea for this podcast even last week. I just didn't bring it into fruition. And now it's so funny that I didn't because now my notes are lost.

We are moving overseas this summer to Okinawa, Japan. Normally, they'd come and pack us in the summer, not now in May. But we wanna get our house on the market so we're shipping kind of earlier than normal, and I thought it was so brilliant to have the movers come the last week of school so that the kids wouldn't be underfoot. Well, with finals, schedules, there's an awards assembly, and just random things happening at school, we have tomorrow my [00:02:00] son is graduating kindergarten. They're having a little program, and , and I'm just thinking, "Man, this was not the best timing," but oh, well, and it'll be okay.

But my notebook, my podcast notebook, might be lost for a few months, or it might be in a luggage that I packed previously. . I hope it's here somewhere, but if not, then I'll see it in two or three months.

But today, I wanna share with you a miracle. To me, it's a miracle, God got us a dryer. He gave us a dryer. It cost $28? When all was said and done.

Knowing that we're moving to Okinawa, Japan, the odds are very high of living on base, so they already provide a washer and dryer. So the question for us was, do we sell the dryer along with the washer, or do we, uh, put it in [00:03:00] storage? We haven't ever stored anything with the military before, so we're a little nervous about doing that. In three years when we come to it, will it still be in okay shape? We've had this rattling around in our brains, this question to sell or to store.

We don't have any sentimental value tied up in this dryer. We just have the quality, it works well, and it's only six months old. Like, why not just store it?

We decided to store the dryer and then, a few days before the movers come, I'm thinking, "Oh, I don't wanna store stuff it's just more stuff to come back to." So we decided to sell the dryer. Then as I went to take the S off of it, which meant for storage, it was to label so the movers knew to take it, I took the S off and I just felt like, " [00:04:00] no." And I thought, "Oh, okay, this is something I'm gonna consider and think about."

Over the next day or two, I would consider that. But I didn't say anything to my husband and I had really come back to, "Let's store it."

The big reason to to sell the dryer is so that we still could wash and dry clothing over the next two months. the day before the movers were coming, he says, "So we're gonna sell the dryer, right?" And I'm like, "Actually, we're gonna store it."

He was like, "But then how do we dry our clothes?" And I said God will find a way. Like, he's gonna help us out. And then I thought of the thrift store that we go to a lot, and

I said, "You know, maybe we can check the thrift store." He's like, "Okay." And because I had waffled back and forth over the previous week, he'd sent me a few dryers on Facebook, and one was missing a knob, and there were [00:05:00] things with other ones, and I just wasn't feeling it.

But right then, Sunday evening, I opened my phone, and I went to the Facebook page for the thrift store. I looked through, and there was a dryer. They said it had been tested. It has a dent in the top of it, and it was for sale for $35.

And I was like, "This, honey. This." And we don't make purchases on Sunday, so I didn't call the thrift store. I'm actually not even sure if they're open on Sunday. But I made a mental note, maybe even put in a reminder on my phone to call them Monday morning. So on Monday, I called, I asked if it was still available.

She said it was. I was like, "Awesome. I wanna buy it." And she's like, "Okay." Um, give her our debit card number, and then I ask about the military discount.

Her response was that you don't do that over the phone. But when you come to pick it up, [00:06:00] if you'll come to the register, then we'll give you a refund for the amount of the military discount. I was like, "Sweet." So I already really felt blessed, and I felt that God just gave us this dryer for $35.

And when we went to pick it up, I went to the register, I said, "Hey, we're here to pick up that dryer." And she led, um, my husband back to where the dryer was, and then came back to the register. And I said, "Can I get the military discount?" She's like, "Yep." And she refunded to our card $7.

We ended up paying $28 for a working dryer, and we have been running that thing crazy to make sure all of our clothes are washed and dried that are getting packed for the next two to three months until we get a house in Japan.

I really wanna give Him thanks, and also to offer you hope when something just isn't quite right. [00:07:00] Hold onto that long enough to let God work it out in your mind. Try not to panic about it or create a lot of anxiety around it so that you can revisit it here and there, you know, a few times a day.

"But what about this thing?" And then one of those times you might get a nudge like I did of King's Treasure, which is the name of the thrift shop. Maybe we can get it from King's Treasure. It actually came out of my mouth to my husband before I had even thought about it.

I had thought about what are we gonna do. If we send it to storage, it presents this problem that I don't wanna solve by going to friends' houses. I don't wanna solve it by going to a laundromat. And God loves us so much, He's not being like, "Well, you need to solve it that way because I say so."

He's like, "Oh, she doesn't wanna do it that way. Well, let's work it out." And He helps to work it out [00:08:00] for our good, but also He's okay with doing it our way. Not always, um, but a lot of times, even in the small things. I love that about Him. He's not a dictator who's there to make our lives miserable. He is a facilitator of our dreams and of our wants. Sometimes in facilitating our dreams and wants, He will direct us in a way that's more difficult, but a lot of times He won't.

There's no force, there's no loss of agency. He can see so much more than we can. Like, he knew that that dryer was sitting there, that it hadn't been picked up, and that we had this need, and he was like, "Hey, let's pair these two things together, and they don't even need to spend that much money."

Wouldn't it be so fun to be able to follow this dryer back? Where has [00:09:00] it been? What thoughts did other people who own this dryer have that got the dryer to where it was when we needed it? That would just be such a fun little treasure hunt. I'll probably never know where this dryer came from. It's just kind of a fun thought. Like, how did God get it here so that it would be here at this moment in time where we needed it for $28? That's what I wanted to share with you this week.
