The Esthetician Podcast
Building Block: Lashes as Your Secret Weapon
Join me, Kari Jo Patterson, for an engaging episode that explores how mastering lash services can dramatically influence your success as an esthetician. This episode reveals the challenges many of us face in building our clientele—especially in the facial arena—and how integrating lashes into your offerings serves as a game-changing strategy.
As I reflect on my own journey from solo esthetician to successful business coach, I share lessons learned about the importance of cultivating multiple streams of income. Lashes not only generate immediate client engagement, but they also pave the way for long-lasting facial treatments. Listening closely to my experiences, you’ll discover practical steps, including the idea of "sprinkling seeds," a metaphor for consistently promoting your services and nurturing your relationships within the industry.
Throughout the episode, I touch on the transformative power of quality education and training through renowned platforms like Borbaletta, essential tools that set you apart in a competitive market. I invite you to embark on this fulfilling journey, finding not just a paycheck, but a pathway to financial freedom and success in your esthetician career. Ready to elevate your game? Kari Jo Patterson:Welcome back to the Esthetician Podcast. I'm your host, Kari Jo, and I'm so stinking excited that you are here today. I'm having a really good week and I don't know if it's just because it was my birthday week I'm recording this February 7th my birthday was yesterday, but it's not going to be released till the end of the month but I am having a really good week. My podcast has really started to grow and I don't know if you guys remember I originally my goal for the beginning of this year is I was like I need like a podcast manager because I just want to capitalize on what I'm doing and make it work so much better. Cause when I started my podcast, I started messy. We start messy guys and I did. I have hired somebody who has come on. She is helping fix all of my systems that just are broken and not necessarily working well, and so it's so helpful. And I'm excited because literally yesterday I had two people well, no three, if you include one on Instagram I had three people reaching out to come and be on my podcast on my Wednesday episodes, which is so stinking great. I'm excited for that.
Kari Jo Patterson:And then on my birthday, all of a sudden I was going through my birthday messages and I was looking at you know who message and I try to go. Someone leaves me like a happy birthday, even if it's like just dumb. I always try to respond with some kind of a memory that I have with them because I'm just grateful for everybody that I've ever met in my life and anyway. So I was going through my messages and all of a sudden there's this really big esthetician coach in our industry and she commented on my personal Facebook page happy birthday, carrie. I didn't even know she knew I exist and I was like wait, I didn't even know she knew I exist and I was like wait, what is she like? Follows me? So I went to her business page and I was who is this girl? Or well, not who is this girl? Did she? Did I ask to be her friend? How does she know me? I know who she is. So like I went to her business page and it literally says she's following no one, she's following anyone. But she literally said a happy birthday Carrie. On my personal page. How does she know me? I don't know, but I don't know.
Kari Jo Patterson:Well, I have a few theories. Which is? There's this theory I heard the other day about sprinkling seeds and I loved it and I wish I could just replay it because I'm going to really mess it up. But basically every day you get up to work and you do something and it's basically like spreading breadcrumbs and eventually they're going to grow, so you don't have to worry if your business is going to succeed or not. These little tiny seeds that you're sprinkling everywhere, eventually they will take sprout. And so my first year getting into coaching I don't doubt I know for a fact that I'm really good. I actually I have one of my clients. I have to tell you one of my clients.
Kari Jo Patterson:Literally I found her on Facebook. It was in a group, I think the esthetician support group or something like that, and she commented this was her comment it's about I don't know if I can go back and find it. I wish I could, maybe I should. But she commented in this group, does anyone ever just want to give up and get rid of all of their employees and then just go back to working for themselves? And I commented on that post.
Kari Jo Patterson:Well, and I probably and to be honest, I think I said something a little controversial which sparked her attention, because she is the type of person that she likes to be called out on things. Funny enough, but I think I was well, that's just like you feel that way because you're doing everything wrong. I think I was well, that's just like you feel that way because you're doing everything wrong. I think I probably said something like that and a nominous, she did it under an anonymous and then she went in and after I posted that, she I think she asked one more question and then I responded in the group and then she went and she booked a call with me and we got on this phone call and she was, yeah, okay, let's do it. And she went from struggling, so wanting to quit and go back, and now she is freaking a powerhouse.
Kari Jo Patterson:This girl is on freaking fire. In fact, she is just she's thinking of opening a second location. A second location. You know what I mean. I'm so stinking proud of her and I guess, when I shut down my business to be honest and this was not what this episode was going to be on today, but we're just having a rambling but when I shut down my business, to be totally honest with you, I really thought. I thought I might be sad, but I really wasn't, and I had all these people that would ask me are you so sad? You built up all that, like you renovated that building, you did all of that and you just let it go. Are you so sad? And I was no, honestly, I didn't say it like that, but I wasn't sad because I was burnt out. You don't build a fricking business and sell it within eight years. That is just not normal.
Kari Jo Patterson:It's hard. I felt like I was in a pressure cooker 24 seven and it was. It was struggle, man, it was real struggle. So but the thing that I was really sad about wasn't selling my business. I was so stinking sad about the fact that I had learned everything that I learned what is that for? When am I ever going to use that again? I went through all that. I learned all of that and I feel like it was a waste. Like I literally felt like everything was a complete waste and I hated that feeling. And then I felt like no purpose or anything.
Kari Jo Patterson:And when my friend told me, carrie, you should get into coaching, start putting yourself out there, I really did it because I really wanted to overcome my fear of being on social media again, because I did go through a little bit of trauma being on social media. You just don't have that kind of success without having haters, true haters, come at you and honestly, now I look back and I'm like that's just part of the game, that's like leveling you up. You know all those haters. I had to fill that trauma and especially if I'm on the world stage, it's going to get so much worse. So like it's better that I hit that, like every new level, there's a new devil. I think I wrote that in my book somewhere Going back to. I like really just wanted to. My friend was Carrie, you should start coaching us. Well, I just want to overcome my thing of Facebook.
Kari Jo Patterson:So I made a commitment that for one year I was going to show up on social media. I was going to not miss one single day. Guys, I went 365 days last year. I did not miss posting on social media, not one time. Let me tell you how hard that is. It's freaking hard. Freaking is not the right word. It was so stinking hard. I don't know, you guys, I have such ADD. I did not write an outline for this, I'm just going off on a spill, but yeah, so, oh yes, I remember I started teaching and I started helping these people and I was seeing massive changes in their business and I was seeing the growth and it was so fun because I used to say when I learned, sometimes you hear something 150 times and you just don't get it until that one time and then when you get it, you really get it.
Kari Jo Patterson:And I used to say that there's sometimes there's like this key that you're unlocking in your brain. When you learn something and you actually get it, it like unlocks the secret part of your brain and your brain like opens up to like this whole new level. And it is so fun because I watch my clients. That's the fun part is when they're struggling and I'm like trying to pull them to understand and to get it and then all of a sudden they get it and it's like boom and like this key and you just it's this change. And I don't know when I had my first client really succeed and when I was like I almost felt like I did, I had mastered everything. I never helped another person again and I just helped this one stinking person. It was worth everything, everything that I went through, because this one girl is going to succeed and I just I love that. I don't know how I got off on topic with that. Why am I on this topic? I don't know where this went off on, hmm.
Kari Jo Patterson:Let me think, yeah, I don't know. Sorry, so there's a little spill for you guys. Was I talking about breadcrumbs? I think I was talking about breadcrumbs, yeah, anyways, when my first year in business oh, that's what I was talking about. Okay, so, my first year in business, you know, when I opened up it was hard, like you guys know, just because I built a successful aesthetics business and now I'm doing coaching, like I go through the same stages that you are going through that I read about in my book. Like I'm in the. I was in like the freaking struggle zone. I don't really, I don't, I'm getting out of it now.
Kari Jo Patterson:Last year it was a little bit of a struggle and I was like, why am I doing this? Nobody even comments on my posts, nobody even likes my stuff, whatever. But every day I showed up and every day I was sprinkling those breadcrumbs. And it's so funny because I'm just starting to notice a change, right, like I'm starting to notice, for example, people are reaching out to me on my podcast. I had this big mentor in our industry. I don't know if I should tell you this or not, but anyway, she literally commented on my Facebook page and I'm like how do you even know me, probably, because I sprinkled breadcrumbs all last year for 365 days. It's funny, in my, my social media it was kind of like crickets in my DMS, but now, like I get people that are messaging in my DMS more and so it's just like little things are starting to move, like I'm starting to feel the move. So I want you to know, just keep sprinkling breadcrumbs if you're in that survival phase. But I'm excited because I had a lot of good things happen this week and that was super exciting. It just happened to be my birthday.
Kari Jo Patterson:But we're going to jump into today's episode. I want this episode I was actually inspired by this to talk about this today, because I had a guest on a Wednesday episode, bree Jones. You guys can go back and listen to that and she and it dawned on me. I was like, oh my gosh, this is what I've got to teach in the lesson is because she told me that she originally started with lashes and she didn't even really want to do lashes to begin with. And oh my gosh, yes, yes, this is like it.
Kari Jo Patterson:One thing that I want to really explain to all of you guys is to build a facial clientele, and I feel like you already know this To build a facial clientele is going to take years. It is so hard to build a facial clientele. But what can you do right now to get you through that struggle, point to where you have a full clientele of your facial clients and you want to know what the answer is it's lashes, it's lashes, it's lashes. That is exactly the system that I used when I was building my own clientele. It's the system that I used when I was bringing on an employee and they had zero clientele. I would put them on lashes and then they would build a lash clientele and as they worked on building their facial side, they were able to sustain, take home a paycheck. It might not be the exact client that they want, but they were. It was able to make it so they could stick it out until they got to where they wanted to be.
Kari Jo Patterson:You might not like lashes. You might love lashes. I have some girls that loved it. I will say when you start out doing lashes, nobody likes it, you suck. Just so you know, if you're going to go try it, what I'm telling you right now when you go and try it, you're going to freaking hate it. You're going to suck, You're going to hate it. You're going to want to give up. Everyone does.
Kari Jo Patterson:When I first started lashes, I sucked at it. I did my friends. It was miserable, it took so long because I was so friggin slow and it was so hard and I wanted to give up. And then my friend, she went out into town and I was like, oh my gosh, where'd you get your lashes done? So she started referring people to me and I was the sucker. I couldn't say no Because I didn't really want to do them anymore. So I was like, yeah, I'll do it, sure, why not? So I started doing these lashes and and my lash client it builds 10 times quicker than your facial clients because they have to come back. Your facial clients, they don't have to come back. They have to come back in four weeks and that's if they really liked you and if you nailed it. Your lash clients.
Kari Jo Patterson:Once you have lashes, you can't not get them filled. It's addicting. You're going to look ugly or you need. You know what I mean. You're going to see them again in two weeks. Let's look at this realistically. You can sit around and wait and try to build a facial clientele and yes, I'm going to tell you. It's going to take you years, years. So if you can get away with making limited to $0 for five years because you live with your husband, fine, that's great. Or you can literally go do some lashes. I don't care, if you want to do it, go do it until you get the clientele that you want.
Kari Jo Patterson:It's kind of like you know we talk about our schedules. If you're new and you're starting out, you're going to have to work evenings, you're going to have to work Saturdays. You're not going to just have the schedule you want. You have to put in the time and then, as you build the clientele, then you can pull back and be like, yeah, I'm not going to work Saturdays anymore, I'm not going to work evenings. But you can't do that until you build the reputations, you build the skill over time and then you can actually pull back. It's the same thing with facials. You might not have the clientele that you want right now, but you've got to be able to get you through that struggle by doing something that's going to have a good return on investment, and lashes are the best return. Just like Bree and I were talking about. That's what she used until she built her clientele. That is what I did.
Kari Jo Patterson:When my employees came on, I gave them lashes. They had to do lashes, that was it, and I worked on building their schedule with lashes, because it was a return client and my employee had instant income. Was it the best income? No, I had one girl. Maybe this is not great for you I don't know where you live and I mean I don't think that I was charging massive amounts. I had one girl and she was brand new. She was making $1,600 about every two weeks only doing lashes and she was on 30% commission. I don't know if that's good for you, I don't know if it's not, but that is what my girl was doing and she was brand new. She used that while she was trying to build up another area of my business or of, I say, of my business, it will.
Kari Jo Patterson:I hired this girl that I'm talking about. She's actually a hairstylist. I brought her on to do the nbr hair extensions, which I talked about that in another episode, anyways. So she was doing lash extensions while she was building her hair extension part. So, guys, lashes are it. It is the king of all king. If you want to be able to make it through the survival zone, you need to do the lashes. Now I'm going to tell you something really, really, really cool, and you want to tune into this episode, because this is the tip that you definitely want. This is the gold nugget. I had Kimber James on the other day and she's the owner of Borbaletta.
Kari Jo Patterson:Borbaletta is the company I use for all of my lashes and this is how I would really do it with my employees is. I know you don't have to be certified to do really anything in our industry, right, like you don't have to be certified in microneedling you got your esthetician license you don't have to be certified in doing lash extensions. You don't have to be certified in all these things. And so there are people that I'm like that's so stupid, I don't care about the certification. Well, in my company I did care, because I feel like if I went that extra mile and I did just a little bit more than everybody else, it meant I cared more. Right, if I was willing to put my money in it and back it, then I'm going to care more.
Kari Jo Patterson:I always had my employees. They had to when they came on, they had to take the Borbaletta online lash course and it helped me with training. So they would go on, because at the time I used to have to send them somewhere to go and learn. But then Borbaletta came out with online courses. So it became so stinking helpful in my company because they would literally go take this online Borbaletta class and learn. They would get a kit, they'd get everything they need. They were being taught by a professional. It wasn't wasting my time, because my time was more valuable doing marketing, building and inspiring the team than, you know, sitting there and showing her the basics, and so she would learn this course from this online Borbaletta. And then I would go in and, you know, work with her one-on-one after she took the course. That is how I always did it.
Kari Jo Patterson:And so I was talking to Kimber and we got off the phone and she is so stinking kind. She is giving all of my clients, all of my listeners, 20% off the course. Actually it might be 15, 15 or 20. I'm not sure I got to double check, but she's going to give anyone who wants any of my clients that I tell them or I talk to them about this, they can get that discount. So when you go to checkout for buying that course, you will use my code, carrie Jo, at checkout and you will get an immediate discount.
Kari Jo Patterson:It's your first time. You can only use it one time on any of the professional products. So if you already are using Borbaletta, maybe you want to get some glue. You can use my code one time on any of the professional products, but it will use it. You can use it on your course and get a discount on those videos. I am telling you, lashes are what is going to help sustain you through that struggle zone. Okay, well, I hope this episode was helpful. I know it was a little bit more of me rambling, but I just, I don't know. I wanted to connect with you guys today. So I hope you guys are enjoying your February and I will talk to you guys soon. Bye-bye.
