SHE Speaks Podcast
We are talking with Western Australian women about self-care, myth busting what is possible while embracing self-compassion, mindful awareness, time, habits and empowerment.
SHE Speaks Podcast
Empowerment as a Micro-Choice
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
For the final snippet of the series, Narelle has deliberately saved the word that has been through the commercial wringer more than any other: empowerment. We’ve been sold it as a purchase, a slogan on a t-shirt. But strip all of that away, and empowerment is something much quieter and much more available – a tiny choice, repeated.
Every micro moment in this series, it turns out, has secretly been the same act wearing different clothes. The breath at the kettle, the thirty-second self-compassion pause, the piggybacked habit, the claimed sliver. Underneath each one sits a single message you send yourself: I am worth thirty seconds. Against a culture that measures a woman’s worth by her output, her care for others, and her ability to disappear her own needs politely – that is not a wellness tip. That is a quiet act of defiance.
Narelle closes the series honestly: this isn’t a before-and-after story. There are still days when every sliver gets swallowed. But water on stone, over time, something shifts – and if you’ve tried even a handful of these invitations, you haven’t been learning about a self-care practice. You’ve been doing one.
In This Episode
• Reclaiming a worn-out word – what remains of empowerment once the slogans and price tags are stripped away
• The thread through all six episodes – how the breath, the pause, the habit and the sliver were the same act wearing different clothes
• Why micro choices compound – not like a lightning bolt, like water on stone: a softened inner voice, a pause before saying yes, a growing sense of being someone worth caring for
• An honest closing reflection – the days that still get swallowed, the harsh voice that still shows up, and the other voice in the room who is quicker off the mark than she used to be
• The practice you already have – why it doesn’t look like the one in the advertisements, and why that’s exactly what makes it last
Your Micro Moment for Today
Sometime today, pause – hand on heart, if that’s yours now – and simply acknowledge: “I’ve been showing up for myself in small ways, and small ways count.”
Then choose the one micro moment from this series that fits best in your life, and keep that one. Not all six. One. Let it be easy. Let it be yours.
Quotable Moments
“Choosing yourself for half a minute, on purpose, repeatedly – that’s not a wellness tip. That’s a quiet act of defiance.”
— Narelle
“Micro choices compound. Not like a lightning bolt – like water on stone.”

“The harsh voice still shows up, but it doesn’t get to run the whole meeting anymore. There’s another voice in the room now, and she’s quicker off the mark than she used to be.”
— Narelle
