Rebranding a podcast

How to rebrand a podcast

Are you thinking about changing the name of your podcast? Perhaps you have a better idea of what you want to talk about then when you first started, or want to do something different or new.

The main reason you should rebrand your podcast instead of starting a new podcast is simple - you get to keep your audience. That is... if you do it well.

You may have already made up your mind about changing the name and artwork for your podcast. If you have, just skip the next section and continue reading. If you’re still on the fence, this next section is for you.

Should you rebrand?

Before you go through the effort of changing the name, URLs, artwork files, intro segments, and everything else that goes into your podcast, consider if rebranding is the best way to achieve the change you want.

If you want to try new things, experiment with different types of episodes, or explore additional topics you haven’t talked about yet, think about how you could fit those things into your existing podcast.

If you just want to add an interview episode to your podcast every week, add an interview episode. If you want to test out a creative idea you had at 4 am one morning, just do it. Your audience will not jump ship because you are trying new ways of serving them.

Every podcast evolves. If you listen to the most recent episode of your favorite podcast, chances are it is significantly different than the very first episode. It’s only natural that you will grow and that your podcast will change. You can make slow shifts over time to move closer to where you’d like to end up without hitting “reset.”

Here are some helpful questions to consider when thinking about rebranding your podcast:

Does this new direction serve a different audience than I already have?

If the answer to this is yes, you’d be better off starting a brand new podcast. The people that listen to your Star Wars podcast aren’t interested in hearing you talk about home gardening.

Will rebranding get me closer to my podcast goals?

When you first started your podcast what were your goals? What were you hoping to achieve? If you believe that changing the name of your podcast will help you get there faster, then it might be a good thing to do.

Is your podcast part of a larger brand?

Maybe when you first started your podcast was just a passion project, but now it’s one piece in a larger pie. Perhaps you’ve launched an online business or started selling online courses, and you’d like your podcast to compliment those new projects. If so, maintaining consistency between your different projects might be a good thing to do.

How to rebrand without losing your audience

Once you’ve decided that the best course of action is to rebrand and change the name of your podcast, here’s how to do it without losing your audience. These tips only work if you’re still serving the same audience. If you decide to switch from talking about cats to solving cold case murders, just start a new podcast.

Have a really good reason

Why are you changing your podcast? Is it to better serve your audience? Is it to expand the scope of what you can discuss? Have a clearly defined reason that you’re rebranding your podcast. This will help you stay focused on the new game plan and prevent you from getting distracted by all the possibilities that hitting reset provides.

Learn from your first attempt

What are the things you wished you had done differently the first time around? Do you wish you had invested a little bit more in getting professionally designed podcast artwork? Did you spend too much on your royalty free theme song? Did you start a Facebook group only to watch it shrivel up and die because you couldn’t stay active in it?

When you rebrand your podcast, take some time to think about all the lessons you’ve learned and incorporate them into your rebrand.

Prepare your audience

As long as your goal is to continue to serve the same people, take the time to talk to them about the upcoming change. Record an episode where you explain why you want to change the name, how it will benefit your listeners, and when the change will take place. You don’t want your listeners to be looking for “My Awesome Podcast” and be unable to find it because you renamed it to “Podcasting Tips with So-and-so.”

Bringing your audience into the conversation also helps them feel valued and considered. Even if you’ve already made up your mind and put the wheels in motion, letting them know ahead of time will help them feel great about the change and even excited about the new direction you’re trying to take.

Don’t look back

Sometimes that brilliant thought you had in the shower isn’t that brilliant when you think about it three days later. Creativity strikes and leads you down a wild rabbit chase of exciting new possibilities, but when you take a step back, it’s not as great as you thought it was.

Rebranding your podcast is a big deal. Make sure it’s really want you want to do. Once you’re sure, pull the trigger and don’t look back. The only thing more jarring to your listeners than rebranding your podcast is re-rebranding it because you decided later it was a bad idea.

Updating your podcast in Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other directories

The major podcast directories like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, and Stitcher retrieve your podcast information from your RSS feed. This information includes things like your podcast name, artwork, description, and category tags.

If you host your podcast on your website or through some other means, you’ll need to update all the appropriate tags in your feed. Triple check all of your changes because making a mistake in your feed can cause you a lot of headaches if the podcast directories aren’t able to interpret your changes.

If you use a podcast hosting company like Buzzsprout, Libsyn, or Simplecast, they will do a bulk of the heavy lifting for you. Just update all of your podcast settings on the appropriate page, and they will provide that updated information to the podcast directories.
